Career as popular writer
In 1986, Stine wrote his first teen horror novel, Blind Date. He soon followed with the novels Beach House, Hit and Run, and The Girlfriend. He was also involved in the creation of the Nick Jr. children's show Eureeka's Castle, for which he was also head writer.

In 1989, Stine teamed up with Parachute Press to create Fear Street, which soon became the best selling young adult series in the nation. In 1992, Stine and Parachute went on to launch Goosebumps, the phenomenal series that made R.L. an international celebrity, and results in his becoming a well known writer for a younger audience. His books have been translated into twenty-eight languages and have sold over 300 million copies worldwide. During the 1990s, Stine was named the #1 million best-selling author in America by USA Today three years in a row. He is also the recipient of the first-ever Champion of Reading Award from the Free Public Library of Philadelphia (2002), a three-time winner of the Disney Adventures Kids' Choice Award for Best Book-Mystery/Horror, and a three-time winner of the Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards. In 2003, the Guinness Book of World Records placed Stine as their #1 best-selling children's book series author of all time. During the 1990s, he was listed in People Weekly's "Most Intriguing People" list.

His stories have even inspired a 4D movie based attraction at SeaWorld San Diego titled, R.L. Stine's Haunted Lighthouse. More recently, Stine worked on three different book series, Mostly Ghostly, Rotten School and Fear Street, and has written the novels Dangerous Girls and Dangerous 2: The Taste of Night. Also, a straight-to-DVD movie entitled The Haunting Hour Volume One: Don't Think About It, starring Emily Osment, based on his Haunting Hour series, was released by Universal Home Entertainment on September 4th, 2007.
