Are you thinking ? I did too . Then I read the article, and watched the Youtube clips, and now I seriously wish that I could cut holes in my roof

Solar Bottle Lamps: Water + Bleach = 10,000 Liters of Light | Designs & Ideas on Dornob

I just found this site, it's full of loads of neat and cool stuff, but the water bottle thing is just amazing. It's so awesome when people come up with such amazing eco ideas, that cost next to nothing but make such a difference :O

Wow, that's such a good idea! It would be especially handy for people in shanty towns and things like that, so they can have light even though they don't necessarily have electricity.

Yeah, it's really cool, isn't it? And so obvious too. The kind of thing where you imagine people facepalming and being like, "wtf didn't we think of this before!!".

I'm imagining it done with different coloured bottles now, that could look so awesome for a kid's playhouse or something. Well, sod the kids, I'D want it too! You'd get less light from coloured bottles, but you'd just need more

Imagine if someone built a metal frame that sat in the roof, that the bottles slotted into, then were sealed into. You could use smaller ones, and make a picture. So you had a glowing stained glass-affect skylight, made from stuff that would end up in the bin otherwise. Would be an epic school project

That is the best idea I'd ever heard! I'd love to do that one day!

Yeah! I suppose it's really not something that could work easily in the thick insulated roofs of the cooler climates. Need to cut holes in the shed or garage roof

I'm thinking about asking to do that in my shed. I just need to try and win my mum around.

I live on a lower unit of a duplex so it wouldn't work for my unit unless I somehow used the window lighting for it. I hardly have any lights on during the day and try to use natural light as much as possible. I am going to look to see if there's anything for windows now. I also want to build solar panels eventually but that project is on hold for the moment.

That's so very simple and yet absolutely genius. Very practical and absolutely fantastic for those areas of the world that need that extra little bit of light.

I might just have to play this this tomorrow.

I saw that yesterday on Facebook, and it does look pretty cool. Unfortunately I live in an apartment with several stories above ours so putting holes into the ceiling is out of the question.
Also I have to wonder how they'd manage when it rains...

@Nim-san: I was wondering the same thing, but I saw what looked like plenty of coverage around the top of the bottle poking out.
