@Cherry: Yeah like I said he lives in a hole. It was weird because he's an avid reader as well but mostly modern books, he doesn't delve into the classics very often. He doesn't watch TV at all so no hope there, but when I showed him the movie he liked it so I lent him my book to read. Hopefully now he'll read more classic books.

I like the movie but in a different way then the book and play. The movie was okay, I didn't like the Phantom's voice that much and if the phantom isn't amazing then the entire musical is brought down because of it. (I learned that with all the different phantoms on stage.)

@Cherry: It's hard for me to switch gears after having read Syrup, as well. I feel like I'm slogging through Stardust, which is a feeling that I never anticipated having. Good luck on the productive aspect of your goals! I'm not adding 'productive' into my To-Do-List until New Year's.

@Dream: I don't dislike him, or anything. I just... don't find him attractive? I don't think that he's un-pretty, but I'm not at all tempted to throw myself at his feet. It's a thing. I'm so glad that I'm not alone!

@Knerd: Yes, yes Phantom is a book! And I've owned the book since the movie came out, but could never quite convince myself to read it. Should I read it?

Speaking of Phantom of the Opera, in the past week I've developed a crush on Emmy Rossum simply based on "Slow Me Down." Which makes sense. I'm an Imogen Heap fan to begin with... Also, have you seen Rossum's eyes? I never realized it when I saw the movie, but they are gorgeous! Sorry for the tangent.

Well, productive for me isn't very much. xD Doing housework, remembering to practice driving, looking for a job, keeping my room fairly orderly, keeping empty soda cans from piling up, exercising, that sort of thing.

And yeah, I've been sitting on "The Bell Jar" by Sylvia Plath for... a LONG time now. Six months, maybe? I was really interested in it right before I got it, but by the time I got it, I lost interest and just haven't gotten desperate enough to pick it up yet. xD I'm sure it's a fine book, I just... don't feel like it. xD;

Mm, well, as long as he reads a lot, that's good. The classics can be difficult to enjoy sometimes, depending on how different the dialect is.

Aww, I liked Gerard Butler as the phantom. But then again, he was the first phantom I ever saw. But damn, he's hot! xD
His voice isn't like SUPERAMAZING, but it's nice, and he doesn't ACT like his voice is bad. He acts like he's a music genius. So he pulls it off.

But the Phantom isn't supposed to be hott! He's a creepy scarred man who lives in the sewers! I like Gerard Butler well enough, but I don't think that he portrays the phantom in the best possible way.

Aislin, if you like the storyline of the musical, I think you'd enjoy the book. There are lots of little differences, including the ending, so it's quite fun to compare the two.

But if half of his face isn't sexy, why does Christine hang around him so much! :P
Though Raul is supposed to be more handsome than him. Which he most definitely was NOT in the movie. xD The Raul was okay by himself, but compare him to Gerard Butler and he just looks like a stupid little pansy with dumb hair. xD

Well, Raoul is a bit of a pansy. He's a pretty boy. So yeah, he's meant to be the exact opposite of the Phantom.

And Christine's original attraction to the Phantom is his talent as a voice coach. He's training her and pretty much warping her mind. He claims to be the "Angel of Music" sent by her dead father to help her. She's actually pretty disappointed the first time she meets him in person.

Oh, right, Raoul. I thought there was an O in there somewhere, but my spellchecker didn't say anything, so I figured Raul was right.

True. I wasn't being completely serious.
Having not read the book, I probably can't really talk on this. I just had the impression that the phantom was supposed to be at least somewhat attractive on his "normal" side.

Never too early to start on your classroom library. I inherited a lot of my class books from the teacher before me, so that was a bonus. I only have that many books because I haunt estate and library sales...

@Cherry: Oh yeah Gerard Butler was hot, and he wasn't a bad singer... but just go listen to the original broadway soundtrack and you will love Micheal Crawford. I always find that the first is the best (of course because they find these people particularly for the position).

Also like Knerd said he isn't supposed to be hot. Raoul, though a fop, is supposed to be the easy choice. Though I would pick the phantom any day over Raoul, that includes the books description of him. The Phantom was a bit overly romanticized in the play and movie. I highly recommend the book though.

@Knerd: Do you remember the description of the rooms in the masquerade ball? I want a house with rooms like that now. That book destroyed my perceptions on life. I want a man who loves me enough to stalk from behind mirrors and walls. xD

I've owned 'The Worm Ouroboros' for like a year and I still haven't read it yet... I really wanted to when I bought it but I don't know what happened.

Dream, I don't remember it well enough off the top of my head. But I'll have to grab the book when I go home and start rereading! There were so many amazing parts to the novel that I should probably refresh my memory.

Last night I asked my mom for some book suggestions, so she dug out some of her books to lend to me.
"Gunslinger" by Stephen King, "Otherland" by Tad Williams and "A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court" by Mark Twain. She assures me that they're all super good.
I did read some of Otherland a loooonnng time ago, and I remember it as being pretty good. I was 11, though, so I lost interest. xD; Just a bit over my head.
I could comprehend it and everything, just couldn't fully appreciate it.
So I'm going to read Company, and then the Mark Twain book, and then either Otherland or Gunslinger. The last two are both the first books in a series, so I'll definitely be committing by reading those. xD Luckily, I'm pretty sure my mom has all the books in both series. Or at least most of them.

Yeah, in the movie Raoul isn't the easy choice on looks alone. xD Though he is sweet. "All I Ask of You" makes meeelllt (I know, I know, that's an Andrew Lloyd Weber thing, not an original thing, BUT IT'S STILL SWEET).
Approximately how old is the book? I have problems getting into books that have a very different dialect. I can understand it and everything, but it makes me have to think a bit more about what they're saying, which makes it harder to get absorbed into the book (is that like, the 70th time I've said that in this thread? xD).

I'm maybe less than 100 pages away from the end of Twilight and I have two comments.

@Knerd: I haven't read it in like a year because my boyfriend still has it, but I just remember all the different coloured rooms that seemed (to me) like a labyrinth. The first time I read that chapter I told my friend I'm building a house like that one day. xD

@Cherry: The book was originally published as small parts in a paper or something from like 1909 through 1910... Surprisingly the book didn't sell well for the longest time. It was originally in French and thus was translated, if you have problems with older English styles, there is probably a newer translated version with more modern English.
