Emma stepped out of the horse drawn carriage and took a deep breath. Lady Alanna had invited her to Adam, Lady Alanna's brother's, homecoming ball. Emma's skirts made a swishing noise as she walked up the steps to the mansion. She nodded a thank you to the doorman when he opened the door for her.

Her heels echoed on the marble floor as she wakled down the hall to the ballroom. There, another doorman waited to announce her. He opened the grand double doors. She paused a moment. "Lady Emma Rose of Norton," he called, and Emma strode into the ballroom.

Emma scanned the room, searching for Lady Alanna. At last, she caught sight of her and headed her direction.

Among the large group of guests walked a long haired redhead. He was looking rather charming and he had quite some ladies around him. He seemed to have this natural charm, but he stayed modest all the way.

When he started to find all the questions a bit annoying he excused himself and backed up out of the group of ladies and onto another ladies path, he bumped firmly into her and even bounced back a bit.
"oh...Excuse me..." he said as he turned around to face the lady he had bumped into.

Emma barely saw the man before she ran into him. "Oh, I-I'm sorry. P-please fiorgive my clumsiness," she said, a bit flustered. She looked up at his face and blushed. "Hello." Emma smiled. Quickly, she tried to squeeze past him. "Excuse me."

Emma kept her eyes on the floor. Her long, dark hair hung down, surrounding her face in a curtain of black. She had used this tactic many times before when she had embarrassed herself. She just wished she could get to Alanna and forget this incident.

[[Sorry about my posts being so short. They'll get longer once I get my creative juices flowing.]]

The man had smiled at her. "DOn't worry, I should've looked where I was going." he said before he just kept his eyes on her. He was a bit annoyed now though, but why?

With a soft sigh he managed to get to the outside balcony where he could get some fresh air.

The man finally left and let her get through to Alanna. "Emma!" Alanna called happily, but Emma was watching over her shoulder at the retreating man. He had headed out to a balcony. "Emma?" Alanna called again. "Emma?"

Emma shook her head and turned to Alanna, smiling. "Good evening, Lady Alanna," she said, greeting her friend.

Alanna waved a hand. "Please, Emma. Lady? We've been friends since we were young girls. We don't need formalities." But Emma didn't hear, her attention was turned to that man again. "Who is he?" she asked, nodding in his direction.

Lady Alanna laughed. "Oh him? That's Lord Jack. He's a MacGavin boy, you know." Emma nodded slightly.

The man was now leaning on the balustrade to cool his head down, he had even loosened up his cravat, he wasn't doing well at these parties. But he had gotten an invitation so he couldn't turn that down, now could he?

His hair had been down, but now pulled up, he was feeling warm and he wanted to get rid of the heat. Due his race he wasn't good with dealing with the heat. All he wanted right then was just to get some blood and go home. But that would be impolite, so he didn't.

Emma shook her head, trying to get rid of that grim feeling she had. Alanna had stopped talking to her, and was now deep in conversation with another lady about all the different ways to arrange flowers. Emma brushed off her skirts and went to sit down just as the music changed to a lively waltz. She doubted anyone would ask her to dance. Or anyone likeable, at least. Only smelly old men ever asked her to dance a waltz.

She straightened a crease on her skirt. Then, she flipped open her fan, brushed a strand of hair out of her eyes, and began to fan herself.

When Jack heard the waltz he had to get in again. With a low grunt he moved himself in again and looked at the lady he had bumped into earlier.
Slowly he made his way to her and held out his gloved hand out to her. "May I have this dance?" he asked her with his most gentle voice. "As an apology for earlier." he added as he smiled at her, not showing his teeth.

Emma raised an eyebrow. This was a change. She didn't know what to say. "Uh, I, uh..." She pursed her lips and placed her similarily gloved hand into his. "Yes," she finally managed. She stood up slowly and placed her fan on her seat. She curtseyed. "I would be delighted to dance with you." Something told her this was a bad idea, but many things told her it didn't matter. Her parents wanted her to dance with every elligable man, and she had rarely ever been asked before to dance by a man as young as him.

The young looking man smiled and bowed slightly to her. "The pleasure is mine." he said before he guided the lovely looking lady to the dance floor and took the leading part.
"Why is a lovely young lady like yourself all alone on this ball?" he asked her before he took the first steps of the waltz, oh he had mastered that dance as if it was nothing, he was a good and fast dancer and his footwork was perfect.

The shiny new looking boots seemed to be floating around the floor, barely touching it.

[Sorry I didn't reply earlier. My computer died.]

Emma furrowed her brow. This man, dressed in such finery, had no right to ask her such a question. She pursed her lips. "I was invited." She noticed that, with his fancy new clothes and everything, Jack MacGaven was a swell dancer. Immediately, her view of him changed. She tried to control her temper, wanting to tell off this priss.

((don't worry, those things happen ^^ oh and mind the spelling, it's MacGaven with an "e"))

The man looked at her. "I just wondered." he said he wasn't all that formal with people, he was famous for that, or infamous. A smile formed on his lips as he started to get the feeling she wanted to loose him. He didn't mind.

[[Oh, ok. I'll go fix that.]]

"Well, M'lord MacGaven," she said curtly as he spun her around. "It would do you well to keep your wondering to yourself." Emma really wasn't this rude. She didn't know what had come over her. Emma took a deep breath. She must be coming down with a fever, or something.

The man smiled. "Well then, you seem to know my name already." he said before he smiled as he managed to avoid another couple. "I didn't catch your name, M'lady." he said before he noticed his hair was out of place, which he hated with a passion.

Emma narrowed her eyes in annoyance. Well, he didn't necessarily know she had asked about him. Sighing in defeat, she smlied sarcastically at him and stated, matter-of-factly, "Emma Lynne Rose, My Lord." She ununciated the words "my lord," making them clear.

THe young man smiled, but it was annoyed. It could been seen by the slightly twitching left eyebrow. "IT's a pleasure to meet you, M'lady Emma..." he said as he spun her around with a great force. Why did he get annoyed by her? Heck he had even parted his lips so far that his fangs could been seen and he didn't even notice.

Emma grunted from the force fo the spin. "The pleasure is all mine," she said through clenched teeth. She spun gracefully into him. Emma had to fight the urge to elbow him in the gut, or step on his toes. It wasn't lady-like. And her parents wouldn't be happy to find she had abused an elligable young man on the dance floor. Then, there was always the possibility that he wasn't single. That would make her breathe much easier. "And is there a Mrs. MacGaven, m'lord?" she asked.

Jack smiled before he got back to his gentle moves. He sensed that she wanted to hurt him, but he knew she wouldn't. SLowly he got a bit calmer again before she asked him that one question which he knew the answer of best. "No, there isn't, lucky me." he smirked before he smiled. "That's why I get to dance all these pretty ladies here." he smirked slyly.

Emma rolled her eyes. "Yes, lucky you," she said dryly. Emma prayed for the song to be over, but it seemed to be one of those horribly long, sad arias; almost as if it were proclaiming her death. Sighing, she relaxed a little, realizing the song wasn't going to go any faster. Her grip on his shoulder and in his hand gentled ever so slightly. He probably didn't even notice.

Emma looked out to the side of him, stealing glances at all the other couples who were dancing. She blinked that thought out of her head. The word couple always brought along bad conotations. Emma Lynne felt the anger coming from Lord Macgaven. If he hated her so much, then why did he ask her to dance? And why, oh why did she accept?

The man did notice her grip loosen and he relaxed a bit more, soon enough he was just dancing slowly with her. He did seem to be panting already, it was odd. A few people around them did notice that Jacks movements were a bit off and noticed how deadly pale he had become over time. He was healthy, right, or was he?

Soon enough Jack stopped moving and looked at her. " would you mind it if I passed the dance over to an other lad?" he asked her while he slightly looked around to find an other dance victim for her.

Emma wanted to scream yes, just to get away from him, but she didn't really want to dance with anyone anymore. But she couldn't have told him that while they were dancing. Her parents would disapprove, and she couldn't bring herself to do something like that. But, since he had been such gentleman about it, she didn't find it rude at all. Emma looked up at him and gave him a weak smile. "Actually, I'm not feeling well, I think I'll sit the rest of the dance out." Emma gently pulled herself away from him. She curtsied. "Thank you for the dance, m'lord." With that, she turned on her heel and rushed from the room.

Jack had been surprised that she was willing to step around a bit more before he came to a stop. He rose his brows carefully as she said that she wasn't feeling too well. Eventhough he had a slight hate for her at that time he just smiled worriedly. " I hope you will be well soon. Thank you for the lovely dance." He wished her before he himself hurried back to the balcony to get some air.

It didn't take too long before he was actually feeling sleepy.

Emma left the way she had come in. Once outside the ball room, she leaned against the door for a second. Then, she hurried out the door into the dark night. Her carriage was not there, as her driver was supposed to pick her up later. Tears began to form in the corners of her eyes as she ran down the steps and around the mansion to the garden. She didn't know what was wrong with her. Finding a bench in the garden, Emma sat down and folded her hands in her lap, hoping no one would find her. She needed to be alone.
