During elementary school, I remembered that I loved his poetry very much. It was witty and simple and perfect for children. Who else could think of "Falling Up" or "Where the Sidewalk End"?

Has anyone else ever been a fan of his work when you were a kid?

He's actually one of the authors that made me want to write. :)

I love him to this day. I've read about the guy, and he's just inspirational. He did things his own way, and told people to take a flying leap if they opposed. Plus, The Missing Piece is one of the most romantic things I've ever read. AND, who didn't read The Giving Tree growing up?

The Giving Tree is definitely one of my favorite books. When I read it in forth grade I cried. xD
I still have some of Silverstein's poems memorized.
Now I lay me down to sleep,
I pray the Lord my soul to keep,
And if I die before I wake,
I pray the Lord my toys to break,
So none of the other kids can play with 'em.
Amen.

xD Prayer of a Selfish Child was definitely my favorite one.

Aww, I love Shel. <3 I did a presentation on him back in college for my Children's Literature class. :] The Giving Tree still makes me a bit misty-eyed to this day. I also like Hug-o'-War.

He drew some stuff for Playboy back before he ever did children's books. :B *Derp.*

I still have his books from when I was a kid. He was one of the first author's I really got into and one of the only poets I can stand to this day. It's great that other people still read his stuff.

I liked his poems for being quirky.

I love The Giving Tree. :) I think its one of the only Silverstein books that I own. Such a beautiful story with simple, pretty pictures.

I used to like his work when I was a child, even though most of the drawings creeped me out.

Did any of you know he wrote songs? If you didn't, you should look up the band he wrote for, Dr. Hook. I love their music, especially Cover of the Rolling Stone <3

I was actually just reading up on Silverstein yesterday - He was a seriously cool guy. He served as a GI in the Korean War, worked as a hotdog vendor for a while, was the staff cartoonist for Playboy, and was turned down by the first publisher that he submitted "The Giving Tree" to.
