I see. why shouldn't you have done it?
definitely not true. I thought short story ended at 7k actually. a novel actually starts at 50k i think...since that's what nanowrimo does. there should be novelette and novel in between novel and short story.

there's a lot of different word counts given if you look it up. especially the boundary between novella and novel.
Quote:
robotbiz, most magazines--the only places that buy single short stories--define it by word count. A short story can range anywhere from 1500 words or so up to 7,500 or even 10,000, depending on the magazine.
There aren't hard-and-fast rules--each magazine's Submission Guidelines are the rules for that publication--but here's enough to give you the general idea:
Micro fiction--under one hundred words.
Flash Fiction--100 to 1,000 words.
Short short--1,000 to 2,000 words.
Short story-- 2,000 to 7,500 words.
Novelette--7,500 to 15,000 words. (Up to 17,500 words at some publications.)
|
this is the quote I pulled from somewhere when me and jean were talking about the same thing. I almost always seen short story ending at 7.5k probably because that's what magazines accept as short stories.

But see that's for magazine submissions they have to keep it relatively short. For literary stuff that an author might self-publish in a collection. I know they are longer and they are still just short stories.
Like Rappaccini's Daughter

its still publishers that are mostly defining though. and I looked at another site that says classification is also defined by the actual story. a short story is mostly defined as being able to sit and read it all in one sitting. a short story should only have a few characters and a very one directional plot.

still, looking through all the google results. 7/10 say 7.5k is the max for a short story. what i posted before looks to be the generally accepted guideline. and now many 20k stories do you know that are about only one thing?

I'm still gonna site Rappacini's Daughter and a couple of things by Hemingway were that long I think.
I don't actually know how many pages 20,000 words translates to
