Oh, there are many challenges for this fandom, but I've only joined two for this year so far. I'm sort of joining this one specifically because someone asked me very nicely (partly because they were lacking artists for the number of stories they have) and I didn't see why not. I can always choose to not claim anything if none of the stories appeal to me.

Yes, for Big Bang challenges, rules are more strict, because you're not doing it just for yourself. There are other people involved, like the author or artist you're partnered with and also (especially) to the organisers. So if you drop out, or do not do what you're supposed to, you'll be troubling others, and it wouldn't be fair for them to suffer for someone's lack.

One author would be partnered with one artist. See, if the artist doesn't finish what they're supposed to, the organiser would have to look for someone else to fill the spot (a pinch hitter). It'd be extra trouble for them AND the author, because then they will have to communicate with a new artist. Additionally, these artists who drop out would usually do so about a week or so before they are supposed to post the work, so the pinch hitter would really need to work to finish art for the story by then.

Alternatively, if you're an artist and have already drawn art for a story but the author is not done editing their story, hence not being able to post it, the artist would have the art, but no story to accompany or give better meaning to it. This happened to me once. It's been three months and I'm still waiting for my author to post their story.

As for the group work part of it, sometimes when an author gets paired up with an artist they may be familiar with, they may choose to work together to make it so that the art interacts or flow well with the story in some way. I've seen these kind of partnerships where artists sometimes beta or co-write their author's works, and the results can be awesome.

As an organiser or moderator of the challenge, they would be obligated to chase or poke people for their works if they're delayed, and I can tell you that this is not pleasant. :I

At least working on these different stories are helping me experiment with different things, so they're pretty fun to do for the most part. :)

Yeah, the Wiki's is rather... tl;dr because they're explaining the history and everything.
The explanation for that is because not all the challenges are the same, sometimes there are some things the organisers choose to do different from others and other things I can't recall at the moment. The general process is like how I describe above, though.

Haha That's understandable. I know the feeling of not liking dragging other people down, and it's actually because of that I joined these challenges, so I'll push myself harder to make something good and make the deadlines. Nothing wrong with doing your own art and story, though, if that's your preference, I just personally can't do it.

The ones I've claimed are all fanfics, yes. I'm honestly terrified of original stories because of lack of character references and images to make my life easier. Also trauma from reading terrible original works.
