I was thinking, and it popped into my head for--no reason, really. You remember in school where you were supposed to write journals? Maybe you still do, wherever you are. And then, funnest of the funs, you got to read them out loud.
I generally took "journal" pretty seriously, and actually wrote about semi-meaningful things. So one time we were supposed to write about something that... I don't remember if it was just an unpleasant experience, or a frightening one... Something to that effect. So, because I was nine or ten (one or the other), and I had recently visited my grandparents--one with a heavily developing case of Alzheimer's--I wrote about the time that my grandmother didn't recognize me at all and thought that she was a child, too. Which WAS heavily creepy and sad at the time to me. (It's still sad. I think it would affect me less now, but I was an angsty kid.) And then I was called on to read this out loud to the entire class.
...........
Funnily enough, I did NOT want to talk about this in class. So I randomly jumped my mind to a time when I caught a napkin on fire pulling something out of the toaster--which, although it did worry me at the time, was much less disturbing. It became obvious that I was talking about this and had not written about it; the teacher called me out on it.
Now it's just a fact of the past, and my grandmother died two years ago--my grandfather a month or two ago. It's sad, but a much more distant thing. And the teacher was a good teacher and all--but I can still see why I wouldn't want to talk about that.
Not sure why it clung to me.
