another book critique

Finished another book. Two sisters must face both parents decline from Alzheimer's. Not a cheery prospect. But the book pulls you in. It chronicles the parents love story. They were mad about each other, and for their whole life. They met during world war 2. They courted. They were young!

That's the difficult thing to process, that the old were once young. Cause we certainly can't imagine being elderly. My grandma was always old to me. She was 74 when I was born. I was 12 when she past. My aunt took care of her. She was a nurse. My grandma later would have a hospital bed at home. She had dentures, gray hair, couldn't speak English. I instinctively knew she was different. This was old. I couldn't relate. My mom and aunt had a sister that stayed in Japan, who was much older than them. When I did the math, I realized my grandma had her about age 17! Pregnant at 16! I was aghast. Agog. My grandma was that young? She had had sex?! Then the realization sets in that she was young and now was old. I was young. But that meant I could one day be elderly! I don't know if my psyche could take that.

Anyway, the daughter tells the parents life story. Then the 2 sisters were born. How their childhood was.

Story picks up when folks are 86 and diagnosed. They have such strong denial. Husband will not stop driving. They refuse help. Turns out they were hoarders.

It's a good story cause she documents their decline. I wasn't familiar with the progression of the disease. Luckily these 2 were able to stay together.

Guess its part of life. Not the fun part. By the time the book ends, the sisters are grandparents themselves. And the cycle continues.
