I can tell you that the ranch in [I]Of Mice and Men[/I] is a microcosm of American society. I can tell you the significance of herbs in [I]Romeo and Juliet[/I]. I can tell you that Hamlet was a seriously depressed guy.
But I could not, for instance, tell you what nine multiplied by three is - at least, not without a great deal of thought.
Such is the curse of the English student.
