KH: Ficlet: Part 6

Sora gripped the front of his shirt tightly as he hurried across the campus to his dormitory. What was that just then? It felt like his heart was being squeezed. Something inside him screamed desperately for him to get away from headmaster Xehanort. Was there something wrong about the headmaster? He was creepy, but that didn’t make him bad. How did he know about the Keyblade? He had searched for someone who could wield it. But how had he known Sora was the one? Did Xehanort know about the masked man? There were too many questions, and Sora couldn’t understand any of it. Maybe it would better if he pretended none of that happened. Wouldn’t he be better off that way?

Sora!

He blinked. Did someone just call out to him? The voice sounded familiar, but he couldn’t remember anyone who had that voice. Was he imagining it? Was any of this actually real?

“Sora?” That voice was definitely familiar. Sora looked up to see Riku standing before him. Riku frowned, his brow knitting in concern. “Are you all right? You’re-” He pointed at Sora’s face.

Sora touched a hand to his cheek and found it damp. A light flush spread across his face as he rubbed furiously at his eyes. “I’m fine,” he said, trying to sound cheerful despite his embarrassment.

“Come on.” Riku grabbed Sora’s hand then dragged him along as he walked across the campus.

Sora followed along without complaint this time. There were no squeals or shrieks of any kind, so they didn’t have to worry about running from the fan club. After a while, Riku came to a stop and ordered Sora to on the bench there. Then Riku walked off. Sora obeyed, feeling confused. What was Riku up to?

“Here,” Riku said, pressing a warm can to Sora’s face. Sora accepted it as Riku sat beside him. “What’s wrong?”

Sora laughed as he rolled the can between his hands. “I must have looked like an idiot.”

“So what?” Riku offered half a smile at Sora’s distressed look. “Looking like an idiot doesn’t mean you are an idiot.”

“But I am,” Sora mumbled, dropping his gaze. “I don’t belong here.”

“Is that all you’re worried about?”

That wasn’t the half of it! But how could Sora tell Riku about what happened the prior night? That would make him sound crazy. “Ah! We’re going to be late for class.” Sora started to stand, but Riku held him back. He sat again and blinked in confusion at Riku.

“It’s not a big deal if you skip a class.”

“But this is only my second day!”

“Attendance isn’t all that important as long as you score well on the exams.” Riku leaned back, resting his arms on the back of the bench. His hand hung down, nearly touching Sora’s shoulder.

“I’m doomed!” Sora groaned dramatically as he put his head in his hands. Good attendance was mostly all he had going for him at school.

Riku chuckled. “If you need help, I can tutor you.”

“Really?” Sora’s head shot up, and his eyes sparkled with hope.

Riku stared at Sora then laughed loudly. The expression on Sora’s face amused him. “Of course!” But then he turned serious again. “You still haven’t explained why you were crying earlier.”

“Funny thing,” Sora mumbled, scratching the back of his head. “I’m not really sure. I didn’t even know I was crying until you mentioned it.” He laughed weakly then stared down at the can in his hands. He still hadn’t bothered to open it and sip the hot drink. Part of him had the deep urge to tell Riku about what happened last night. But he didn’t want to jeopardize their friendship with crazy talk.

“Something is bothering you.” Riku stared at him, knowing there was definitely something on Sora’s mind that he wasn’t saying.

Sora almost flinched. Riku was rather perceptive. If it were Tidus or Wakka, Sora could laugh it off, and they would think everything was fine. “Maybe I’m just homesick,” he mumbled, though it was far from the whole truth. With a sigh, he leaned back and tilted his head up to gaze at the sky.

Riku stared at Sora, not believing his claim. Something glinting in the sunlight caught his attention. His hand moved toward Sora, and his fingers hooked around the silver chain peeking out from under Sora’s shirt. Sora jumped upon feeling Riku’s fingers brush against his neck. Riku stared intently at the chain and its crown charm in his hand.

“Ah, my friend gave that to me,” Sora explained with a fond smile. It was his most important possession. Riku said nothing, merely staring at him expectantly. Sora’s expression turned sad. “I don’t what happened to him. They said he moved from the island while I was in the hospital. Head trauma or something. Knocked some memories right out my head.” He took the crown charm and held it tightly in his hand. “I might not remember him. But we made a promise to meet again. I know one day I’ll see him again. And then, my memories will come back. I’m sure of it.”

Riku stood suddenly. He said nothing as he walked off, leaving Sora sitting confused and alone on the bench.

KH: Ficlet: Part 5

Sora jerked up with a startled shout sticking somewhere in his throat. His eyes darted about in search of the masked man. But the room was empty. The tension melted from his body for only a brief moment. Where was he? This wasn’t his dorm room, and the last thing he could remember was passing out somewhere near the library. This place was clearly not that either. Sora rubbed his head, wondering if last night had been a product of his imagination. His fingers brushed over the rough material of a bandage. A dull ache pulsed inside his head, and his right side throbbed, both places where the masked man hit him. Then everything that happened that night wasn’t a dream?

Sora stared down at his hands. It still seemed unbelievable to him that he had summoned that key- What had that masked man call it again? Everything happened so quickly that he had troubled remembering all the details. Sora concentrated, trying to call up that weapon again. It came to him almost effortlessly. Sora jumped in surprise. He expected the attempt to fail. Or maybe he wanted it to fail so he could deny the events of the previous night.

“I see you have no trouble calling up your Keyblade.”

Sora jumped again as the Keyblade vanished from his hand. “W-What?” He looked up to find a man had entered the room. Sora didn’t recognize the dark skinned man. He resisted the desire to shudder under his unusual golden gaze.

A smirk threatened to escape, but the man managed to keep a straight face. “I should introduce myself. I am headmaster Xehanort.

Sora gulped, recognizing the name from the letter of invitation to attend True Heart Academy. This was the man responsible for allowing Sora into the academy. “Ah, thank you for the opportunity to attend this magnificent school,” Sora said with all the politeness he could muster. He never expected to actually meet the headmaster.

Xehanort waved his hand like thanks were unnecessary. “I brought you here for a reason, Sora.”

“You did?” Sora asked blankly. The headmaster actually knew his name? With so many students, Sora would have thought it impossible for the headmaster to remember them all, especially him.

“Yes, I sensed that you might be the one to wield the Keyblade,” Xehanort explained. He continued when Sora gave him a puzzled look. “I’ve been searching for the one who can use the Keyblade.”

“I don’t really understand,” Sora jumped in before Xehanort could really explain things. “But if you need this Keyblade thing, then you can just have it.” He called up the Keyblade again then held it out to the man.

“I’m afraid it doesn’t work like that.” Xehanort shook his head. “The Keyblade chose you for its master. You can’t simply pass it off to another.”

“Oh.” Sora frowned, and the Keyblade disappeared. “Well, I wish I could help you, but I should really be getting to class.” He climbed out of the bed, trying not to seem like he was in a hurry to leave. The man gave him a bad vibe, though he couldn’t explain why. Maybe that eerie glint in his eyes had something to do with it. Thankfully, he was still fully clothed. Sora would have found the whole encounter far creepier if he wore only his boxers or something. Xehanort didn’t try to stop him as he made a dash for the door.

Xehanort watched Sora leave, and the door closed behind him. His expression was calm, giving away none of his thoughts about their conversation.

“Was that wise?” asked the masked man appearing behind Xehanort. “I doubt he’ll trust you now. I could still take him out. He’s weaker than any of the others.”

“You’re still underestimating him.” Xehanort smirked. “He’ll come to me. With the right incentive.”

Sora stared into the darkness. He held his breath, waiting tensely.

After hanging out with Kairi until her next class started, Sora returned to the site where he met Riku. But by the time he got there, his books were already gone. He asked around, but no one had seen the books. When Sora went to the administrative building to ask for new books, the lady at the front desk rudely refused to give him new copies. Bad luck seemed to follow him like a shadow ever since he came to True Heart Academy. Maybe he should take that as a sign that he didn’t belong here.

Sora went to the library after his last class to get started on his homework. But he must have nodded off in the middle because when he woke, it was dark. The library was empty. No one had bothered to wake him up and inform that the library was closing for the night. Or he had found a spot too hidden away and went unnoticed as everyone left. Sora could sleep almost anywhere and probably would have slept through the night in the library. But a noise woke him up, and he felt unsettled by it. It was likely nothing, his mind playing tricks on him.

Footfalls echoed in the endless darkness, coming closer.

Sora decided not to wait around any longer. He grabbed his things and hurried through the aisles of bookcases toward the exit of the library. He kept walking, picking up his pace as the unsettling feeling grew, but out of the corner of his eye, he thought he saw movement among the shadows. This place sure was creepy at night!

Sora burst through the doors of the library and raced out into the night. He couldn’t get over the feeling that something was following him. Throwing a glance over his shoulder, Sora hesitated, slowing then stopping. He could see the outline of his shoes trailing behind him. Out of the dark prints, shadows rose, forming odd shapes. They had eyes that glowed in the darkness. What were those things? Sora slid a foot back, keeping an eye on the creatures. Was he still dreaming? He yelped as something clawed at his leg. He shook the shadowy creature off and stumbled away. But more of them climbed out of the shadows, swarming around him. When he knocked away one creature, two more jumped at him. No matter how much he struggled to fight them off, their numbers were far too much for him. Sora hit the ground with a grunt, and the shadows eagerly jumped on top of him. He struggled, but he could do nothing to throw them off him.

Don’t give in!

Sora!

Blinding light exploded, throwing off the shadows. Sora stood, squinting at the brightness as it gradually faded. When he could see again, the shadowy creatures were gone, destroyed by the light perhaps. What had happened? Sora rubbed at his head, trying to wrap his mind around it all. Then he blinked, staring down at his right hand. He held some strange key-like object. Where had that come from?

Clapping drew Sora away from his thoughts. He spun around, taking a defensive stance as he held the key like he would a sword. A man walked out of the shadows in a strange costume and a mask hiding his face. “Who are you?” Sora demanded, wary of the encounter after what happened with the shadows.

“So you can use the Keyblade,” the man said, deliberately ignoring the question. “And I thought you’d be a dud. Well then,” the man raised a hand. A strange key-like object, much like the one Sora held, appeared in his hand in a swirl of darkness. Sora couldn’t see the man’s face behind the mask, but he got the sense that the man was smirking. “Let’s test you out.”

“Test me out?” Sora repeated, mind reeling from the events of the night. “I’m not some toy.”

“Oh, but that’s where you’re wrong.” The man rushed at him, and Sora barely had time to react to the man’s speed. But the key thing seemed to respond on its own. It jerked his arm up in time to block the man’s attack. The force rattled the bones in his arm. “If you rely solely on the Keyblade to do the fighting, then this won’t be any fun for me.” He pressed down, forcing Sora to one knee.

Sora glared at him. “I don’t know what you’re talking about,” he shouted, putting all of his strength into forcing the man back. The man jumped backward and flipped in the air then landed neatly on his feet. “What’s a Keyblade? And why are you attacking me?”

“Now that’s more like it!” The man laughed loudly. He pointed toward Sora with the key thing. “This is the Keyblade. A weapon. But that’s all you really need to know.”

When the man rushed him again, Sora immediately brought up his Keyblade to block. But the man vanished. Lowering the Keyblade, Sora glanced around but could find no sign of the man. Pain exploded from his head where the man slammed down his Keyblade. His vision blurred, and he swung the Keyblade blindly through the pain. The man’s Keyblade landed a second time, scoring a hit to Sora’s right side. A strangled shout tore from him as he held an arm around his waist.

“Where did that fire go?” the man asked. Sora swung at the source of the voice, but his Keyblade met with empty air. “You’re no better than the rest.”

The man’s voice came from behind him. Sora twisted around, but the man easily blocked his attack. Was this man for real? How did he manage to move around so quickly? Their Keyblades remained locked, and Sora’s attention remained focused on the struggle, trying to overpower the man. The man held out his free hand to Sora’s chest. A sudden blast of dark energy sent Sora flying backward. Sora hit the ground hard and groaned as his body ached everywhere.

“Pathetic.” The man came to stand over Sora. “If you’re the one we’ve been waiting for, then I’m disappointed. There were better Keyblade bearers before you.” He raised his Keyblade, readying a final strike. Sora tried to move, but each movement made him groan in pain. Already his consciousness started to fade. Bad luck had definitely decided to stick to him.

But the final blow never came. Instead he heard the clash of metal followed by a muffled curse. Sora tried to stay awake long enough to see what happened. But his eyelids grew heavy until he finally gave in to the slumber of unconsciousness.

KH: Ficlet: Part 3

Posted 03-03-2011 at 03:26 AM by meilin

Sora munched on the remainder of his sandwich that he had kept for after class. That class went better than his first class. Philoctetes was a much nicer teacher than Maleficent. Sora was glad to have the chance to get up and be active, especially after the tense class before it. Phil, as he preferred to be called, was perhaps a little too into his “training” and rambled on about what it took to be a true hero. Sora didn’t really understand it all, but he thought he could really like Phil. At least Phil didn’t make him want to disappear for fear of embarrassment.

Sora turned a corner around a building as he licked a drop of mayonnaise from his thumb. He halted when he saw a strange shadow. Lifting his gaze, Sora stood dumbly as the person descended upon him. The man seemed to have appeared out of nowhere. He was still trying to figure out where the man came from when their bodies collided. Sora’s head spun as he was knocked to the ground again. How many times did that make now?

“Aw, he got away,” some girl complained.

“Kya, that was so cool!”

“If we hurry, we can catch him!”

Starting to regain his senses, Sora stared up at the man now straddling his body. Apparently, the man didn’t see fit to get off him. The first thing that he noticed about the man was his silver hair that just barely reached past his shoulders. Now the girls’ comments made sense. They belonged to The Silvers fan club.

“Hey! Are you all right?” the man asked, staring down at him. His aqua eyes held concern, worried that he had hurt the man beneath him.

“Huh?” Sora responded blankly before everything caught up to him. “Uh, yeah, I’m fine. Why are you on top of me?”

“Sorry. I should have looked before jumping.” The man glanced over his shoulder and cringed.

Sora pushed himself onto his elbows to see why the man made that face. But before Sora could, the man grabbed his hand and dragged Sora to his feet as he stood. He hauled Sora along behind as he hurried away. “Ah, my books!” Sora stared back at his fallen books now disappearing in the distance. “Hey!” Sora frowned when the man ignored his shout of protest. Did all these silver haired idols think only of themselves? He put his feet firmly on the ground and refused to budge until the man paid attention to him. He could be quite stubborn when he put his mind to it.

The man halted and turned to face Sora. He still held onto Sora’s wrist. “Would you rather I left you to get run over by crazy fanatics?”

Sora paled somewhat. He already had one encounter with a mob from the fan club. “Then why are we just standing here?” He started at a jog, wanting to get far away from the girls chasing the man now running beside him. Sora couldn’t keep track of where they ran around the large campus. Somehow, they found their way to the roof of one of the buildings. He plopped down on the rooftop and panted after the long run. But at least, they seemed to have lost the crazy girls.

“You’re not a bad runner,” the man commented, bent over with his hands on his knees as he also tried to catch his breath. “Are you on the track team?”

“There’s a track team?” Sora shook his head. “Ah, I’m Sora.”

“Riku,” the man said, gracing Sora with a smile. He took a seat beside Sora. “Sorry I dragged you all around campus like that. Sometimes those girls are hard to lose.”

Sora laughed. “It was actually kind of fun.” It reminded him of old times when he would have races with his friends. “Why do they chase you? I mean, I heard there was a fan club dedicated to the guys with silver hair, but,” he scratched his head, “I don’t really get it.”

Riku sighed. “It seems they think being our fans somehow makes them our friends. They keep trying to talk to me, but I’m not really looking for superficial friends.”

Sora frowned as he leaned back on his hands. He always tried to get along with people, unless they were like Xigbar. But he could see why Riku wanted to avoid those girls. He wouldn’t want friends that only liked him based on his looks either. “You must have it tough. But not all people are only interested in people’s looks.”

“And you’re one of them, of course?” Riku glanced at Sora.

“Sure, looks are great and all. But what’s the point if the person has a bad personality?” Sora shrugged, and he caught the small smile that snuck across Riku’s face.

“You’re so predictable, Riku.”

At the girl’s voice, Sora tensed, fearing that they hadn’t escaped the fan girls after all. But when he looked toward the door to the roof, he smiled upon seeing Kairi.

“You always hide up here when those girls are after you,” Kairi said with a teasing smile. “Miss Maleficent is looking for you.”

Riku groaned. “What does she want now?” He climbed to his feet, dusting off his pants. “See you later, Sora.” He waved then headed toward the door.

“So you know Riku?” Sora asked, a little disappointed to see Riku go. He didn’t seem to be having much luck getting to talk to people for longer than a few minutes.

Kairi nodded as she took a seat beside him. She had some time before her next class, so she joined Sora until it was time for them both to go to class.
