Sora tossed in his bed, kicking off the blankets. It felt hot under them, much too hot.
Your light cut through the darkness.
Sora’s eyes flickered rapidly beneath closed lids. His hands clawed at the mattress sheet.
Hey! Can you hear me?
Sora shot up on the bed, gasping in large mouthfuls of air. He put a hand to his chest, trying to ignore the tight squeezing there. Where had that dream come from? But already the images from the dream were fading. He tried to grab onto even one tiny piece of the dream, but it slipped away too quickly. “Ugh,” he groaned and rubbed at his eyes with the heels of his palms. He was still exhausted, like he hadn’t slept at all that night.
A buzzing, rattling noise drew his attention. Sora climbed out of bed then walked over to his desk. He picked up his cell phone and checked the message. A smile lit up his face when he saw who sent it. Tidus sent a picture of him and Wakka dressed in their official blitz ball team uniforms. Sora knew they’d make it on the team. He typed out a quick message of congratulations. He was happy for them and wished he could have been there with them. Once that was done, Sora prepared for the day. He thought they would have a single bathroom that the whole floor would share. But like the rest of his ideas, he was wrong. Each bedroom in each dorm had its own private bathroom attached. Sora was glad he wouldn’t have to fight for access to the bathroom. He brushed his teeth and washed his face and ran a brush through his hair, though it went back to its usual spikiness no matter what he did to try and tame the unruly locks.
Sora grabbed the books he needed for the classes he had that day. As he left the dorm room, he noticed there were no signs that his roommate had even returned during the night. There was nothing he could do about that, and he would be late to class if he dawdled around worrying about the whereabouts of his roommate. He hurried out of the dormitory, wondering if he would have time to grab a quick breakfast before class. When he checked the time, he realized he slept in later than he meant. Sora jogged across campus in search of his class.
The teacher gave him a sharp look as he entered the classroom. Late. “You must be the new student,” she said, unpleased. Her gaze made Sora shift uncomfortably. “I guess they’re letting anyone in nowadays. Find a seat.”
Sora ducked his head as he made his way toward an open seat. He felt some relief when no one laughed at the teacher’s comment.
“Before I was so rudely interrupted,” the teacher said, landing a glare on Sora, who sank in his seat. “We were discussing the heart. Can anyone tell me the name of the chambers of the heart?” Her gaze passed over the classroom. No one raised their hands, even if they knew the answer. “Demyx.”
“Um,” mumbled the boy sitting next to Sora. He sat up straight when the teacher’s attention landed on him. He had dirty blond hair done in a strange mullet-Mohawk style with a few bangs that hung down in his face. He scratched the back of his head, struggling with the answer. “Could you repeat the question?”
The teacher’s mouth thinned in an angry line as rage flashed in her eyes. “If you don’t start paying attention in class, I will kick you out.” Her voice rose with each word, and Demyx sank farther down in his chair the louder she got. She turned her attention onto another student. “Perhaps you can give us the answer, Zexion.”
The class continued like that. Every time the teacher asked a question, Sora felt his stomach knot up as he prayed she wouldn’t call on him. The class went from discussing the physical heart to debating theories about what the heart really was. Sora tried to keep up with the discussion while scribbling down notes as quickly as he could. When the class finally ended, he hurried out the door with the rest of the students desperate to get away from that teacher. She was one scary woman!
Sora had an hour long block of free time before his next class, which gave him enough time to head to the cafeteria and eat. Before he could start toward the cafeteria, someone wrapped an arm around his shoulders. Surprised, Sora looked to find Demyx beside him.
“Congrats,” Demyx said with a smile. “You survived your first class with the dragon.”
“The who?” Sora gave him a confused look.
“We call Miss Maleficent the dragon. And from that class, you can probably guess why.” Demyx shuddered. “She seriously scares the crap out of me.”
Sora groaned. “Just what I need,” he muttered. He hoped he could manage to escape Maleficent’s wrath in class.
“It’s not all bad,” Demyx said, trying to cheer him up. “Some of the teachers aren’t so bad. Okay. Maybe only one or two are all right.” He laughed when Sora groaned again. “Ah, there are my friends.” He waved toward a group of men across the way.
Sora looked to see Demyx’s friends and cringed when he saw the man from yesterday. Xigbar, was it? “Those are you friends?”
“Well, friends might be the wrong word.” Demyx laughed as he rubbed the back of his neck. “Somehow I got roped into being in the disciplinary committee. So I end up having to hang out with them even if I’d rather be doing something else.”
After the meeting yesterday, Sora didn’t think he wanted to hang out with them either. “I don’t have a lot of time before my next class, and I was hoping to grab some food.”
Demyx laughed. “If I didn’t have to go meet up with them, I’d join you.” He patted Sora’s shoulder. “Catch you later.”
Sora sighed as Demyx hurried off. He didn’t want to meet with Xigbar again, but he didn’t want to be rude to Demyx. Sora turned and made his way toward the cafeteria.
