My first blog entry

Posted 10-19-2008 at 08:40 PM by CruellaDevil16

Hello everyone who reads this blog! I am new here and this is my first blog entry. I am happy to be here. I am part of other forums too, like Roliana and of course Gaia. Well, this period is very difficult and confusing for me for many reasons. First of all, I have english lessons and many tests as I sit Proficiency exams at December so I am very anxious about them. Also, I haven't gone to school for about 2 weeks because it is closed (don't know how to explain the situation in englisg, sorry) and that's bad because when school starts again I will have to study hard as the teachers will give many homework. Furthermore, my bunny is seek and don't know what to do with it. I give it some medicine but I am very anxious about its health. Last but not least, my online boyfriend is offline and will stay offline for more than a month and I miss him a lot, I want him to come back.
Well, that's all for now. See ya...!:)

Sister's visit and work

Posted 10-19-2008 at 04:31 AM by mmariep2

Sister came into town from Ohio for a surprise visit late late late Thursday night/early Friday morning.

Ended up going to the next town over to meet up with the other sister and we all (including baby monster) went shopping for the day. Spent insane amounts of money, but we're all happy I suppose. I got two new pairs of jeans, 'cause my one and only favorite pair are thinning out on me and have holes in them. Bought stuff from the Disney Store for the baby monster. Sleeping Beauty Halloween costume with crown, scepter, and light up shoes, pjs, Piglet stuffed toy and two Sleeping Beauty mugs for myself.

Sister bought some philosophy brand perfume-lotion set which smelled like Bath and Body Work's Warm Sugar scent or whatever. It was really very lovely, and now I want some too.

She's taken the baby monster with her to drive up to Vallejo to visit our uncle and his family. I'd much rather be with them then here at work.

Also, the boss stopped by the office earlier today to tell me that there is a Bruce Willis movie-thon thing going on right now. I'd much rather be at home watching those then here at work too.

I'm surrounded by paperwork that needs to be filed. I have absolutely no desire to even contemplate filing them. XP

Martial arts tournament is next week and I'm not at all sure I'm prepared for it (at least endurance wise). But I've already picked out the kata I'm going to perform for the single man kata competition and I figure I'll just stick with that. The group one we've got down, but I think we need more practice.

The Publisher's Dilemma

Posted 10-18-2008 at 03:13 AM by Cami

I have a possibly incorrect idea that people are interested in what I do. After all, everyone wants to write a book, and few people know that much about how a manuscript moves from the author's computer to the bookstore. This perpetrates myths, legends, and the occasional god (note: Max Perkins).

My career is the book business. I've interned at five publishing companies of various sizes (and spent a year working at a major bookstore in New York City); I've worked in editorial, marketing, and publicity; I run a freelance editing business and work directly with authors who wish to publish their manuscripts; I've published short stories in small literary magazines; and I am about two months away from graduating with a master's in publishing and writing.

All this, and I occasionally get paid. Not often though.

You see, books aren't like every other business. We're in it for the intellectual superiority. We purchase books that have little chance of selling because we think they deserve to be published. We pour our hearts and souls into poorly organized manuscripts like they're misbehaving children that will grow up right with just a little encouragement. And when a book does sell, it tends to be in the thousands, not the millions.

At least, that's the way it used to be. I'm entering an industry that's starting to actually be run like a business. Past sales and perceived market have as much of a say in what's bought now as editorial instinct. Perhaps more. Publicity backs the guaranteed successes, and the C and D list authors (those less important to the company) are lucky to get a tour or a single ad. Whether a book is going to be a bestseller is often decided before the book even hits the stands.

Many authors believe that getting a book published makes them successful, but fewer than 25% of books published actually make profit. While this seems a disastrously low number, at least it means that companies are still willing to take risks on new authors. But those risks are becoming fewer, and the amount of money put behind them is often nowhere near enough to launch a career. And if one book fails, then the author is unlikely to be able to publish another.

It's a cutthroat business, but it's my business. Despite the downfalls, it's still all I want to do.
