I want the username of someone from 2008.
I've been rolling the idea around for a while, and I've decided that I want to change my username.
The trouble is, the username(s) I want are already taken. The accounts haven't had any activity for years, and one hasn't had a single post or login. Is there some policy about the names being taken forever by inactive users? |
As far as I know, you can't change your name to something that has already been taken, no matter if the account has been inactive since the day it's created or banned or for any other reason. |
That's what I've read, but I'd like to hear it from a staff member.
|
We might allow it, if the account has never been used since the day it was made.

You really MIGHT allow it.
I've wanted to shorten my name to just Cora for quite some time but always figured I couldn't cause the name was taken by a member who has only made 1 post with no activity since 2007..... |
Well, now's your chance to apply.
|
Yay for dangerous precedents! :)

Keep your shit active.
Or post a genuine concern instead of some backhanded comment. |
You're not the boss of me. http://emote.guanobowls.com/badrazz.gif

Or, hey, we could all get along, that's an option, too. I'll buy you both beer and an ice cream cone, how about it? <3

My usage of the standard 5-year-old response should give an approximation of how seriously I'm taking crane's snark.
(Protip: Not very. :)) |
Oh, I know... but... I just really like beer and ice cream. Is that so bad? D: I wonder if Ana's taken... and it's not! Mods, how do I go about changing my name?

I like beer and ice cream, too. Not necessarily at the same time, though. |

That doesn't make the slope any less slippery.
(...and I'm not my wife.) |
I'm not sure what my precedence has to do with it. He didn't like it when I changed my name back then, either. I believe I had been given an eye roll, whereas I saw no problem in a completely empty and abandoned account being removed. Why let a good name waste? (Okay, my name's not "good". It's boring. But I wanted it.)
I absolutely do not miss the tension I always felt when he heavily disagreed with what I thought were decent ideas. I hated that eventually I felt less an individual and more of a packaged deal if I then in turn agreed with some things most didn't. That was a major contribution to my flaming AA mental burnout. But, to get back to the topic (sorry Crane): I SUPPORT NAME CHANGES ON EMPTY ACCOUNTS. *waves flag* I see no harm if the individual made no posts, has no inventory and hasn't logged in recently. It's just a waste of space. |

My only inquiry is about the two accounts, because I couldn't quite decide on which name. I can understand the concern about taking the usernames of someone who might be away on an extensive hiatus, but there was no note or mention of any such absence. If they died, I'm sorry to hear, but it doesn't change my desire for the name. One of the avatar icons is broken, and the other remains unequipped. |
Okay, wow. I completely apologize to Saisei and Chi for apparently provoking something I had zero intention of doing. I'll go back to, "This doesn't fall under what I have any authority for doing, so I'll leave it to the people who do." and think happy thoughts and hope that by imagining I am in a state of zen, I provoke a ripple effect of harmony that encompasses one and all.

Hm, if taken names are possibly takeable under certain circumstances, then there's a couple of names I'll be wanting to change to too later for both my main and Mule...:O |
I've had people mis-ping me (even though the pinging feature doesn't work for me 95% of the time anyways) because they try to ping the user "The Crow" instead of "The_Crow". I have the underscore because the space that was taken. I remember being peeved that the account was inactive... now I'm inclined to investigate just HOW inactive this person was...

Do I get consideration for this username? It would help with the mis-pinging and such... |
Hmm, the issue here is that our provisional decision on this was we'd do it if an account was over 2 years old and had never been used. Created by not posted with. The reason for that being, if we opened the gates for people being able to take the name of an account with posts, then things would escalate until some started making unreasonable demands.
Give someone the name of a 2 years dead account with 1 post, and someone else would ask for the name of a 2 years dead account with 5 posts, someone else one with 20 posts...and it would snowball until you get people asking for the name of an account that's been inactive for 6 months and has 2500 posts. Because it's a sad fact that if you give people an inch, some will take a mile. Let's see what the others say. Mama Juru: CK: yanyan13: We could set the limit at 2 years old and just that 1 introductory post, and absolutely nothing more, no matter how much someone begs or gets all butthurt. But can you see how this could be very problematic for us? |
Since mene seems in love with pulling gold out of the system, charge more for the username change to another user, put the extra on that account as a "sorry we took your name, in case you come back" present. :)
