If I wanted to go back and edit most of my posts with a '.' would it be against the rules? I guess it could be seen as spam if somebody looked back on those threads and saw a period as the only content of my post.

Do you mean remove the post's content and replace it with a period?
Because if you did that you'd lose an awful lot of gold.

If your name was changed, that change would show on all posts you had ever made.

It remains as c0th wrote I think. I changed my mule's name not long ago- I could go check and see for you.
EDIT: It says as the name that you were quoted in.
