I don't know about the school system in America in detail, but over here, one whole 'semester' is a whole year, January to November. Our 'mid-term break' is only 2 weeks long (July) and the moment break ends is the mid-terms. We do get a whole month of holidays in December, though.

Sounds a little like a year-round school.
