Locke claimed that your conscious self is not permanently attached to any particular body or substance, and I agree with this view. I agree because I think that the conscious self is my own mind. Then, conscious self is just a concept or view that tells me to be aware of myself and what’s going on around me. For example, when I was typing the last sentence, I am aware that there is some kind of voice in my head that tells me what to type. However, I can not find this voice anywhere else, but in my mind. Some may argue that mind is just the brain, but even if it is, how is it possible that I go search for this “conscious self” in the brain? The brain is made different kinds of neurons and such, so it implies that conscious self is the neurons? I would disagree because I think it is more than that. Because if it is just the neurons, won’t everyone else have the same conscious self as me? By communication with each other, this is clearly not the case.
Another example that the conscious self is not attached to any substances is when we sleep. If it is attached to anything, then we would be fully aware of us sleeping. Because it supposed to be not sleeping but to be aware of what is happening to us. However, that is not the case. We are only time we are “aware” that we slept is after we woke up. This shows that our conscious self is some what related to our mind than to our brain cells.
The following example illustrates that I am conscious of what I am thinking but I don’t know where the source of thought came from. While I was on co-op, I often find myself talking to myself. One side would ask what I should eat for dinner and the other would reply, then eventually the two voices would start an argument. Finally, getting annoyed, I would then tell the voices to be quiet and finally “regain” control of my thoughts. <<add something here to conclude =w=>>

As to answering the second question about anyone who had a past life, I don’t know anyone like that, but there is a famous person that is said to reincarnate all the time. He is the leader of Xi Zang, which is a territory in China that I don’t know the English name is. Apparently, he always reincarnates after he died. Before he dies, he would tell his followers where to find his reincarnated self. Then the child they found will be taken back and raised as the leader.
I think in this case, he would have passed Locke’s “test” for determining if he was the original person because some say that he processes the memory of past life and acted like the person he was before. However, it could also be argued that he only acted and thought in this way because he was trained to be like that ever since he was small. Hence, if he was to be raised in another situation, he would not pass Locke’s “test” even if he was the reincarnated leader!

While working on this reflection, I find that many of the choices we make depend on both the external and internal constraints that we have. After thinking, some of the external constraints that limit my options come from those who are in power. For example, the law imposed by the government. Even though it is there to protect us, for some, like criminals, it limits their freedom. There are also rules that society expect me to follow. For example, in school, it is expected that we attend all classes and go do exams. For my Japanese class, I could just skip, but there’s a 1% mark penalty which makes the choice to skip the class very unlikely. There are also constraints made by family members or friends, who expect you to do the right and moral things. For those constraints, I think that it is there to prevent chaos in the society, and it does not limit the freedom on we have, because we would be the ones that chose and make our decisions. Therefore, the main limitation of freedom depends on us.
The internal constraints we have depend on each of us. For me, I think the major constraint is the moral value and personality that I have. Whenever I decide something, I need to think about if this is right? What will happen if this is the wrong choice or if it hurts someone? Would my parents be happy with this choice? How about my friends? I also think about my feelings and what will happen if others view me differently when I did this. There also emotional constraints that influence my choices, I would want to be proud of what I did and feel happy about it. I am also concerned about pleasing others while feeling I did the “right” thing.
As I said, I find that external and internal constraints work closely to each other. There are many factors that seem to cross over, for example the morality I have. It is formed over a period of time, where I learned from the society what I “should” do and not do. Then as time goes by, it became what I believe and start to limit how I should pick my choices.
Here’s an example of how I think external and internal constraints work together when faced with a choice. If I was told to murder someone and I would get a reward in the end, I would not do it even if the reward is tempting. The external constraints would be that I broke the law and society will see me as an outcast and therefore, put me in jail. My friends would be disappointed in me, and my parents maybe even won’t accept me as their daughter after I got released. The internal constraints I have would be that it is against my morality. If I don’t have the believe that killing is wrong, then I would have no problem killing that person. However, I think that killing is wrong and I would have conflict with myself. Would I be happy to kill someone? Is it just? Of course, the answer would be no.
There are no possible ways to fully eliminate the freedom I can use. Even when I think I have rid off the external constraints when acting on certain things, I have not. I am acting on my believes that was learnt from around me. Therefore, I think that, acting freely is not possible and the only way to feel I am acting freely is by not thinking about it and just act.
