Some information about the world in which Ignis is set in.
The World
[i]The history- China, the middle country, is known for its ancient history. While you maybe interested in one or two eras, surely you wouldn't waste your effort to discover what happened during that 5000 years. Well, there are people who have dedicated their lives in searching and recording events that happened during this long period of time. Kirin's family was one of them.
Kirin did not know what was wrong with her. Her strange ability to hear spirits talking to her, in her own language. She couldn't hear all of them, but certainly the ones in her grandfather's shop. Everything seemed to be alive in there, and Kirin was scared of it. She was, in fact, shocked that her grandfather, who seemed cold and aloof all the times, wanted her to become the new owner of his antique shop. She couldn't understand why...until one day, an old man, who claimed to be her grandfather's friend, came to her home. He was...dying. But before he died, he told Kirin of the extraordinary works of her family, generations after generations, stretching far back 5000 years ago, when China's civilization first began.
Her ancestor was among the first human that was made by the Goddess. After that kind Goddess died to save the mankind, he kepted her spirit with him, traveling to different places of the land, trying to make her alive again. Human beings, however, were too powerless to such things. So eventually, in midst of his relative's mockings, he died. The spirit of NuWo, however, was deeply touched by this man's determination. The spirit prayed and prayed , until finally her voice broke through heaven's barrier and was heard by other Gods. The spirit of the Goddess returned to heaven. But before she did, she blessed all of the man's children, granting them the power to talk to Gods and other spirits. This power, however, was majorly lost when human civilization relied more and more on science and technology. Eventually, the power only existed in one family line, and Kirin was the only heir to the Goddess' power....
From the dying man Kirin realized who her grandfather was, and, in order to accept the man's dying wish, she agreed to take over her grandfather's shop. Kirin's grandfather had spent his whole life collecting anceint Chinese artifacts that were enchanted with spirits. He had hoped that, by selling these artifacts to others, he would be able to awaken the sleeping power from the Goddess' blessings (which, he believed to still exist). During his lifetime, however, only a few artifacts were sold to the right owners, while the others were lost and returned. Kirin, therefore, became his only hope, to continue his task, and to revive the Goddess' blessings.
Will the girl be able to take up this task...?
The store- Kirin's store was located in a small suburban area of Menewsha. The outside looked as if the house was going to break down, with outdated designs and peeling paints. On the inside, however, the structure looked fine. The room, although not too small, was crowded with artifacts from China. A brown haired girl can be usually seen within the shop. When she was asked, however, she'd usually point out that Kirin, the owner of the shop, was inside. However, there seemed to be no "inside" of the shop?

..:: Character profile::..
Artifact's owner: Yumehayla Magami
Spirit: Xiu Yue (Graceful Moon)- Inspired by: My love for flowy oriental clothing? Mostly my imagination.
Apperance: Yue has big, dark eyes with long eyelashes, and long, long hair, part of it held up, the rest tied back, and decorated with silver beads, red crystals, and red orchid flowers. She's pretty small, and couldn't be older than sixteen. She either shows up naked, like when she was killed, or wearing the same hanfu that was the reason of her death.
Personality: At first she seems to be pretty shy and afraid of people, but that is just her reaction for the memories of being killed for something such trivial. The real Yue is always curious, which shows even now, when she just follows something she finds interesting, had incredible knowledge of etiquette, decorating, music and poetry. And was one of the better go players. If she was to be calmed and assured of her safety, she would probably turn back to the self-confident young lady she was.
Relationship:The hanfu was the reason of Yue's death. Yue was one of the maidens inhabiting the palace in the time of emperor Gaozu of Han, and her job was to keep company to his wife, Lu Zhi, and she did if with all might, because she loved her Lady, was happy when she was happy, sad when she was sad, and angry when she was angry... She knew of her Lady's anger towards the emperor's courtesans, and silently hated both him and them for bringing her lady to this state. But, when she came of age, and turned into a beautiful lady, she caught the eye of the emperor... And her world ended. Herself, she knew nothing...but the empress knew very well what's happening, and decided to punish the girl at the first occasion. So when she accidentally stepped on the empress' hanfu, she hit her, called the guards, and ordered them to kill her, but beforethat to make her sorry she was even alive. Yue died a painful, shameful death, and the hanfu was sealed, because the empress didn't want to wear something 'that girl' even touched. And Yue never got to know the actual reason of her death.
Gender: Female
References:- Artifact: Something in style like this [x] but with more layers and decorations, kinda like here [x][x]. Flowy sleeves like here [x]. Colorwise it's close to this [x] but with bit more black.

Artifact: Lďż˝ Zhi's hanfu- History:
Hanfu, Han clothing, are traditional clothes worn by Han people in China, said to appear at the beginning of Shang dynasty(ca. 1600 BC - ca. 1046 BC), and slowly disappear before the Qing Dynasty, in 1644. Today you usually don't see people in hanfu, though there are quite a few movements trying to bring it back.
As for how to distinguish hanfu fromhanfu from other clothing: The upper garment consist of "yi" (衣), that have loose lapels and are open; lower garment consist of skirts named "chang/shang" (裳); diagonally cross each other, with the left crossing over the right; sleeves are long and loose; and buttons sparingly used and concealed inside the garment.
Gender-specific, typical hanfu doesn't differ that much between male and female.
A typical set of Hanfu usually has two or three layers: the first is mostly the zhongyi (ä¸z衣) which is typically the inner garment, like a T-shirt and pants for Western people. Next one is the main layer of clothing, mostly closed at the front. There can also be an optional third layer, which is often an overcoat called a zhaoshan, one open at the front. More complicated sets of Hanfu can have many more layers. To make a hanfu formal, you need a long front cloth panel attached from the waist belt, called a bixi (蔽膝), a zhaoshan and a guan, which is a type of headgear for the upper classes.
As for resources, hanfu were made of chineese silk, one of the things that China is famous from. This beautiful, shining material is made from cocoons made by the larvae of the silkworm (Bombyx mori). It is said that silk was produced in China as far as 6000BC, and that it's discoverer was the empress Xi Ling-Shi. At the beginning only emperors were allowed to wear silk, but gradually it spread to all people that were able to afford it. In more modern times many people were criticising silk production, because the larvae were dying in the process of it's production, and it's now easier to find so-called artificial silk, which is produced without hurting the larvae.

Stages:
Artifact

The magical experience begins by obtaining an artifact from the shop. Some will look very old and outdated, while the others might look more modern. Whichever is the case, the artifacts are dormant at this stage. You have the choice to either seel it to an antique dealer or keep it...
an excerpt from Tales of the Middle Country
Enchanced

For whatever reason you have kept the artifact with you, and one day you find that smokes are coming out of the artifact! No, no water...it's not on fire, don't worry. But at this point, surely you'd want to take this thing back to Kirin and return it because it creeps you out, right? No??
an excerpt from Tales of the Middle Country
Sprite

So somehow you managed to not throw this haunted artifact away... Well what about now? Waking up today you find a little creature sitting next to/on top of/around/within your artifact! And WTF it talks! Although really...all it can say is Chinese...you might want a translater for it, or choose to throw the thing away.
Oh but wait! Why is this thing still here?? You were sure that you had buried it somewhere far away! Looks like this litte thing is stuck on you...Maybe it would be helpful to ask Kirin what to do.

_________________________..:: How Yumehayla got Lü Zhi's hanfu::..
__________________________________________________ __________________01/06/2007
- "You're kidding!" Yumeh started laughing at her classmate...and quickly stopped, when she heard no response.
"You ARE kidding, right...?" A stare of disbelief, when the girl shook her head.
"No, I'm not, Yume. You destroyed the costume for the play, so YOU have to get a new one." The class president looked at her colder than usual. They never were that good friends, but that was the first time she saw that gaze.
"But where am I going to find a dirty, old chineese dress?!"
"First, it's not dirty. At least it wasn't before you 'made it look better'. Second, it's not a dress. It's a hanfu. Third, it's not my problem. It's yours. If you won't have it by noon tomorrow, you're not going to pass."
~*~
"...Man, that was -cold-!" Yume sighed, walking a small street in the city. What should I do now? She couldn't think out anything good... All clothing shops in the city she already been in, and all chinese dresses didn't look a bit like that one. In the museum there was one, but they didn't even want to hear about borrowing it... How dumb...that old thing would probably turn into ash as soon as Malin would try to put it on for her 'big role'... Stupid Malin.
...wait a minute... Yumeh even stoped walking, when the sudden idea struck her. Old thing! That's it, she just has to find an antique shop!
...and she just had to turn around. Because there it was.
"Old and dusty, that's just what I need." Yumeh smiled, and walked inside...
~*~
Yes, they did had a 'hanfu'. The owner girl, who seemed to suit more the soccer field than this attic shop, tried to sell her some kind of a fairy taly about an eeeeeeeeeevil empress the dress belonged to. Yeah, right. As if. Brobably her grandma sewed it on her birthday. Whatever. The point is, I have the dress. My life is saved.
She slowly arrived home. And as soon as she entered, the phone rang.
"...Class President? What? If you wonder, I ha..."
"You don't have to make any excuses, Yume. There's no problem anymore."
"...what?" Yumeh blinked. Now, what was that about..?
"Malin's mother had a spare hanfu. You can feel saved."
And the Class President ended the phone call. But Yumeh kept staring at the phone. After a while, moved the stare at the shop bag, and took the hanfu out of it.
"...now, what am I going to do with you..?" She held it, for the first time actually looking at the patterns. "...You don't look half that bad. And the price wasn't too big...I will see later."She dropped the hanfu at the chair, and walked out of the room. Dinner won't prepare itself.
