A small, chocolate-brown bundle squirmed. The tall grass reeds towered over him, acting like a shield to protect him from the wind. He was only a few days old, but already his senses were sharp. From a long distance he could smell water or a food source. At about the same distance he could hear the sound of birds singing, and if he strained his ears enough he could hear the humming of a hummingbird's wings.
The gem on his forehead reflected the light of the sun. It glittered as he shifted the position of his head. His eyes slowly fluttered open as a breeze blew above; the tall grass swaying like water. A scent was carried on the wind. Something somewhere smelled of strong pine. After drawing in a long inhale, the dragon sneezed. The sneeze came out as a loud snort that kicked up dirt beneath his chin. He shook his head as the dirt cloud disappeared, and gradually lifted it with closed eyes and a half-open mouth.
There was a pause in his actions. The wind died down and the grass reeds stopped moving. Sounds of crickets grew louder in the absence of the wind. When the wind picked up again, the small dragon pup snorted and then sneezed into the dirt again. He whimpered and made squeaking sounds as he slowly lifted his rear end into the air. With a few more grunts and squeaks he managed to stand on all four legs. Though his eyes were still closed, he moved his head from side to side as if he was slowly taking in the appearance of his surroundings.
Swaying a little, he stepped on clawed paw forward. He made a cat-like noise and lifted his head up. Standing up, his head was visible above the grass. He opened one eye slowly and then the other. As the grass swayed gently the trees' leaves brushed against each other to make a sound similar to an ocean. The dragon pup slowly mastered the ability to walk on all fours. He emerged from the sea of the tall grass. At the sight of the plains, littered with patches of wild flowers and small hills of over-grown grass, he became excited.
Something from behind began waging, slowly at first and then a little more violently. The sensation was caused by a strange pins-and-needles feeling crawling up and down his spine. The dragon pup looked over his shoulder to see what it was that was moving behind him. When he saw that it was something attached to his body, he began to attempt to catch it in his mouth. He lost his footing, grunted when his face was flattened into the ground, but regained his balance by laying down on his belly.
