We speak in Latvian. Despite what many thinks, Russian is not that known here. For example, i don't know it... Though, I consider learning it. I already know some words and can mostly understand what people are saying.

We have 3 main parts in Belgium; the Flemish part (where they speak Dutch); and the Wallon part (where they speak French). And in our capital; Brussels - both languages are spoken. I live in the Flemish part, but close to Brussels, so I speak mostly Dutch, but also a big part French ^^

And then to make it more complicated, next to French and Dutch, German is also an official language but only spoken in a small part of Belgium ^^

Well, they make the sound... longer, I guess? We call them lengthening signs.. And marks below letters like ķ and ņ, are softening signs. But, well, there are no such sounds in English.

The whole situation with the languages here is really messed up though. Some in the Flemish government and federal government actually wanna split up our country! All because the french-speaking part in Belgium is economically not well-flourishing. >.>

Well, I guess its crazy accents? I just take it part of language, hehe. But Latvian IS one of the hardest languages to learn, as far as I have heard. Not to mention the stupid, complicated grammar we have. ><

English is pretty tough too....I've been speaking it for 18 years and i still have no idea what I am doing.

Our country has a long history of wars revolving around the language.

I mean; we started off as a part of the United Netherlands, and got occupied by France. When Belgium got independent, French was the official language, the language of the elite; Dutch was just the language of the lower classes.
But last century we became a democracy; and not only the French elite was allowed to vote, but also the Dutch-speaking working class. A government for the french-speaking and a government for the dutch speaking part was created; ruled over by a federal government in Brussels. After that the Flemish fought to have schools in Dutch; made Dutch the official language next to French.

And now. they want to split up our country; because we are giving too much money to one part (namely the french-speaking one) of the country (while a century back - it was vice versa.)
And they want the Flemish part to unite with the Netherlands again and the Wallon part with France. They have no idea what to do with Brussels.

... owO I wish I had something to say besides thats not really a rant. But, c'mon, how messed up can be this thing with languages. *shakes head* They don't know what they want anymore.

Yeah, it just angers me whenever they are talking about the subject on television. I mean we are all people, and we are ONE COUNTRY.
I don't mind paying for social health; I don't mind paying for the French-speaking part.

I do mind paying the wages of those darn politicians :@
