Oh, I do remember that time too. Two seconds over a full minute and those dear providers counted it as another full minute, etc. God, that was expensive.

And the time when the first kid in our class got a cellphone - now I even see five year olds texting with their phones. And Gameboy Color. :O Playing games in color on a Gameboy?!

Gameboy Color is OOOLD. Then it was GBA, and now it's a DS.
But yea, I was shocked when I signed my son up for kindergarten and the school presented me with a list of rules, one of which was that my son couldn't bring his cell to school. Uhhh..... wow. I'm hoping that was a blanket rule for the whole gradeschool, and not really aimed at kindergartners, but still. A fifth grader with a cell is still pushing it in my book. Of course, now he's in 4th grade and I have to constantly tell him he MAY NOT take his DS on the bus, and I don't care what the bus driver says. XD

Jez: Well, in my opinion, it depends on the situation. If a child lives quite far from school for some reason and their (foster)parent(s)/caretakers/etc. work full time, it is important they can reach them, I guess. Same for other circumstances in which it can be important to quickly reach their parents. Otherwise? No.
