Russia has been faced with invasions and wars from those exact areas dating all the way back to the 1400's. You cannot name a war they weren't involved with against Poland and/or Turkey. They've been fighting for those specific regions for over 500 years, dating further back than Peter the Great.
Given the opportunity to occupy them, no shit they're gonna take it.

You know, American foreign policy wouldn't be so bad if it stuck to the 19th century foundations of ascendenacy and the founding father's principles of non-entanglement. However, as soon as we started to skew Wilsonism and got involved with European politics and the idea of being peacekeepers in smaller countries, everything went to hell.
