My friends got me into Game of Thrones, and once I saw a few of the episodes on HBO, I read ALL of the books within the next 4-5 months. XP They are LONG too, boy howdy, but totally worth every minute of reading. And it was a great way to pass my gym hour every day, and then some. :D

I am SO excited for the new season of the show. I really should re-read the second book, since it's been almost a year now since I've read it...

Have any of you all read the books? *geeks out* XP

This is one of those new series I keep meaning to look into but never find the time. XD

Um, there is SO much that happens in the books that it's almost impossible to tell you what it's all about, but here's a quick summary from Wiki:

A Song of Ice and Fire is an ongoing series of epic fantasy novels by American novelist and screenwriter George R. R. Martin.



Originally planned as a trilogy, the series now consists of five published volumes; a further two are planned. In addition there are three prequel novellas currently available, with several more being planned, and a series of novella-length excerpts from the main Ice and Fire novels.


The story of A Song of Ice and Fire takes place in a fictional world, primarily on a continent called Westeros but also on a large landmass to the east, known as Essos.



Most of the characters are human but as the series progresses others are introduced, such as the assumed-to-be-extinct cold supernatural Others from the far North and fire-breathing dragons from the East. The series is told in the third-person through the eyes of a number of point of view characters, 31 by the end of the fifth book.


There are three story lines that become increasingly interwoven: the chronicling of a dynastic civil war for control of Westeros among several competing families; the rising threat of the Others, who dwell beyond an immense wall of ice that forms Westeros' northern border; and the ambition of Daenerys Targaryen, the exiled daughter of a king murdered 15 years earlier in another civil war, to return to Westeros and claim her rightful throne.

And what makes them so great is the writing, hands down. It's rich, detailed and pulls you into the story so you want to read more and find out what all the characters are doing and what their motivations are.

I want to read the Game of Thrones books but I haven't purchased them yet, there are a few things I need to buy first (a new router, a new mouse, and some stuff for my kitchen). But, I'll probably end up picking them up at the latest around July when I visit my family. I won't have a pc for the month I'm visiting so I'll go nuts without SOMETHING to do besides smoke cigarettes on the pier.
