Ursula Vernon.
She writes the webcomic Digger found here and she has her own art website here.
I *love* her work and I constantly read her livejournal because she's so dang witty! She also writes children's books.

If you'd like to start with something shorter of hers, there is always the obscenely cute, and finished story of the Little Creature.

@Cami: The Phoenix Requiem (my absolute favorite), The Dreamer, Dreamland Chronicles, and Strays just to name a few. They are all very awesome.

@steel: I love things that are witty. I'm sure I'll love it. ^_^
I just started reading Little Creature just now and it is pretty good so far. :)

Ah, I must have missed it. Haha. I think there may be only fifteen comics on your list that I have either never read or don't read anymore due to lack of time or updates. Good picks!

Inverloch was what got me starting reading webcomics in the first place. I'm excited that Sarah says she's going to be putting the rest of the volumes in print form. I have the first two, but I want the rest. There's just something about having something tangible that I can take with me wherever I want. :)

@Cami: Wow. That's a lot to keep up with! I have read some of them, but it's been a while. Any you recommend specifically?
Strays is an awesome comic. It's very funny and the art is really good as well.

I used to read a webcomic called World Break a while back, but the author decided to stop making it. I was really sad because it was really starting to get good. It's not even online any more. :(

I always hate it when the comic stops updating. Makes me sad, but I understand that sometimes authors can't keep up with them.
I also enjoy Freak Angels.

I just wish I had saved all the pages or something before it went. I didn't realize that the author was taking it off the website as well because they didn't for a month or two after the announcement. :/
I've often thought about starting my own webcomic, but I know I probably wouldn't be able to keep up. It's a lot of work really. Especially if you aren't being paid for it.

Heck yeah, it's a ton of work. Some artists have managed to make it their job, but it takes a looong time.
I don't, but I have a total lack of wit and computer art skills.

Lets see. Girl's Genius, definitely. If you're not reading it, you need to be.

Better Days was great, but it's over. Worth reading the archives, though.

Blank It isn't one of my favorites, but I feel the need to recommend it because it's wonderfully chaotic. XD

Cat Legend is wonderful once you get past the first chapter (which I think was written before the writer really figured out what she wanted to do because it's full of inconsistencies and isn't nearly as well written).

Dreamless is wonderful and beautifully drawn. It's actually drawn by the same person who does Phoenix Requiem, but not written by her.

Girls With Slingshots, Girly, and Gunnerkrigg Court are all wonderful.

Oh, and Hanna Is Not a Boy's Name is a great one to start. It's still really new, but it's quickly becoming one of my favorites. It's so uniquely drawn and the story is fun.

Instant Classic is great. The guy disappeared for like three years, but he came back two months ago and has been updating every day.

Questionable Content and Red String are two of my favorites. I've been reading them both for some five years.

Slightly Damned is great.

Something Positive (though the archives are forever long).

Starslip is very creative, though probably not at the very top of my list.

XKCD is hilarious. It's one of the few nonplotbased comics I read.

And Zebra Girl has a great story but updates sporadically.

I... think that covers my favorites. <<,, I guess Multiplex would be near the top too.

Edit: Decided to split this all into separate lines to make it more legible.

I am totally with Cami on: Girl Genius, Dreamless, Girls With Slingshots, Girly, Gunnerkrigg Court, Something Positive, XKCD, and Zebra Girl.
I'm going to have to add in Sheldon, though. If you like Calvin and Hobbes, you'll love Sheldon.

I do like Sheldon. I also love Little Dee, but it's within months of ending. He's already told us that the comic is winding towards it's conclusion.

Though, actually, the author of Little Dee just made a new comic named SpaceTrawler which has been great so far. It's only 11 comics in, so it would be good to start now, and I'm willing to bet it will turn into a wonderful comic.

And did I mention The Meek? That's another fairly new one that has started wonderfully. And absolutely beautiful drawing.

I read too many comics, don't I? <<,,

@steel: I'm studying to be a graphic designer, but even so I think it's hard to draw people. Animals? Okay. People? Eek. D: Which for me would make it hard to draw what I want in a comic.

@Cami: Dreamless is definitely on my "to read" list. I'm going to wait a while and then read it in one sitting though. I started reading it weekly, but I confused myself. xD
I've read Red String to a certain point. It's pretty good. A bit confusing for me since the main character changes her hair and some of the girls look similar, but the story itself is good.
I love The Meek. The facial expressions in that one are terrific. I need to catch up on it though.
Multiplex I haven't read in a while, but it is hilarious. Especially since I've worked at a movie theater. xD
I'll have to look the other ones up.

Thank you both for the recommendations. ^_^

I used to read a lot more than I do now, but some of them have kind of slipped through the cracks over time. I'll have to go back through my favorites folder sometime and catch up on them all.
In fact the only webcomics I've stayed up-to-date on are the ones that have links on Phoenix Requiem. xD

@Cami: No. What's that?
