Typing Deficiencies?

I hope there was no other thread like this...I looked back a bit but couldn't seem to find anything....

I was in Creative Writing yesterday and one of my friends directed me to this typing game/competition thing. You had to type six words that the computer generates for you in the quickest time possible. Well, said friend is some sort of crazy genius at typing and the other had been working on her typing skills for a while. Me? I'm a chicken pecker and only seem to use a few fingers while looking only at the keyboard.....so every time that the six words would pop up I would have to look down at the keyboard. My times suffered and needless to say, I got laughed at.

After that I seemed to notice that half of my peers had some sort of typing skill, leaving me to look thoroughly stupid. I mean I'm 18 and can't type....is there a problem?.....Well technically I "learned" in middle school, but a few lessons don't stick.

So I ask...do you chicken peck, has your slowness been laughed at, do you wish you could type, or do your fingers have eyes while typing? Please discuss your typing problems or triumphs, please let me not be alone.

Typing.

I'm pretty good at typing, but I owe it all to years on the internet. I'm actually faster at typing than I am at writing things by hand, I'm horribly slow at that. I type in the correct way and I don't look at the keyboard, I look at the screen. It's much faster that way. But I notice a lot of people do the whole find and peck thing. LOL. So you're not alone. I had a typing class in high school that I took simply to make an easy A. I'd type real fast through the program and have crazy WPMs and sometimes people would stare at me. But I hate my boyfriend sometimes, he always manages to outdo me in everything. I did some typing race thing against him a few days ago and he beat me every time. Part of it was it was full of words I'm not used to typing so that slowed me down a lot. I'm much better when I'm typing stuff that I'm thinking, because I already know what word I'm going to put down next without having to look at something.

Madd 09-20-2008 10:05 PM

I have a friend who "chicken pecks" and is hella faster than any keyboarding person is O_o;

IndiGlo 09-20-2008 10:12 PM

@ Vickicat : I honestly don't know what is slower...my writing or my typing. Maybe they are the same....except that I can read the type...xD
Aww, but I have had years of internet experience....of course about 95.9999% of it is spent lurking and finding music....^ 3^

@ Madd : You have a very talented friend...very talented indeed . 0.

My typing skills are zero. I'm definitely a 2 finger picker. I did used to be able to type fairly well though, but over the past few years it's just got worse and worse, and I typo like crazy. Quite often I type completely different words to the ones I'd intended
: /

I say I have dyslexic fingers, but truthfully it does irritate me when I am thinking "many" but my fingers type"maybe", and I type to instead of the ALL the time!
Or my fingers use a different tense to what I'm thinking, and end a word with ly instead of ing, it's extremely annoying :-x

I'm a cynical person, so I have to say that I think the OP's friend got them to take that typing test simply to show off their own skill, but that's just me >_>

Someone who's in an email group that I belong to does similar things, he posted an IQ test for us all to take, and get pretty pissy when 3 of us beat his score

EDIT: I've had to edit this 4 times to fix mistakes >.<

IndiGlo 09-20-2008 11:42 PM

@ jellysundae : Wow, dyslexic fingers, that has to be frustrating xD
Nah, I don't think he showed it to me to rub in how good he is, he only wanted for me to get better since I've been complaining at how slow I am. He says it helps with speed....but if you can't type in the first place then speed has to wait ^ ^;;

Celes 09-21-2008 12:34 AM

Hmm, I guess I would say I'm about average. I can type and not look at the keyboard, but I can't really type "uber" fast. Although it really doesn't bother me to be honest. I'm not one of those technology lovers where I'm IMing and texting all the time. It's not a race, and as long as you can communicate effectively who cares if you can type fast or not.
The only thing I can think of that it would be of great importance is if you have a thirty page report to write and don't care to take five months to do it. ^-^

Sugar Floss Decay 09-21-2008 05:03 AM

I'm a really fast typist, 90 words per minute, in fact. However, I have the hardest damn time hitting the "p" key. >_<;;

Kah Hilzin-Ec 09-21-2008 05:27 AM

I'm above average, but it may have to do with the fact that most people from my country lack a comp and type ridiculously slow xD So in reality, I may be average ^^'

I do have to admit, I have a hard time writing the word "yourself". Almost always I misspell it "yourslef", possibly because while writing the word, I type "s" with the left hand, so my right hand reaches the "l" before the left reaches the "e" o_o There are some other words [misspelling them for the same reason >.<] but the word yourself is the most notable.

PS: But at least I always check for mistakes, and edit them after posting xD

EDIT: Gahh I misspelt two out of three yourself! Gahh I misspelt it again >.<'' *fixes it* Ta-daa~ 8D

jellysundae 09-21-2008 05:34 AM

The "slef" thing is a really common transposition. I suppose "teh" must be too, for it to have moved into chatspeak now ._.

I totally agree that typing tests like that don't improve your speed, not for me anyway, they just send me into a panic and I make even more mistakes than I would usually

Angel Naomi 09-21-2008 05:59 AM

I type fairly fast and can type without looking at the keyboard, but I like to look down while I type if I'm not copying something, just because I mess up less often. My sister can type up to 140 wpm at her fastest and her average is about 84 wpm with accuracy. I'm fastest at around 70 and average, accurately, about 50. My mom "chicken pecks" XD She's up to about 20 wpm and my little 8 year old brother is just starting to type and he's at around 10-12 wpm. It depends on how often you are actually typing on the computer. I IM a lot on the computer so I'm almost constantly typing, my sister more so.

DYKE JONES 09-21-2008 04:01 PM

i do this weird mix, of chicken peck and regular keyboard. i memorized the keys, but my hands refuse to be familiar to that one hand on "ASDF" and the other on "JKL;"
so i look down a lot, but i type faster than anyone i know. it's weird.
my girlfriend though is an expert. she can watch tv and type and it annoys the heck out of me.
i mean seriously, she'll be writing and look at me and talk. so i feel you on the whole "how can people do that" feeling.

maybe we should practice the whole generic typing position until we don't feel lame xD

Kieran Haines 09-21-2008 04:19 PM

I don't chicken peck, I use the homerows since I was in an Information Processing class last year, and we had to do typing exercises EVERY DAY D:

So I can type fairly well, but I need to look down every once in a while to type the "x" or "v" keys. XD

Renxya 09-21-2008 07:24 PM

I hate typing classes D:
I taught myself to type a looong time ago, and I just look at the keyboard while typing, while sometimes looking up at the screen. I usually don't make mistakes, and if I do, all I have to do is replace the letter.
I don't think I've ever done one of those timed typing tests, though. o.o

bluezjessi 09-21-2008 07:55 PM

I always used to think I typed relatively fast. :XD I hadn't taken a -actual- keyboarding class before, meaning I taught myself to type a certain way; a very weird, messy way. I would position my hands around the areas that I type the most words in, completely disregarding the "home row" asdf jkl; way of typing. Heck, I -never- used the right shift before either. So my hands would turn in mid-type to hit the left shift+A, Q, Z, and so on... for some reason it would just work for me. I got progressively faster through practice, IMing people, writing stories... most of the time, I still write like this. And I'd still be as fast as most people who used the "proper way" too.

But this semester in college, I decided to take a keyboarding class. :D Boy, that was different. It was so hard to get used to using the correct key positioning at first; still kinda is. Now my typing's slowed down a bit because my hands are attempting to type how I used to, while at the same time remembering ">.o Not.. proper.. typing... etiquette.... *flail*"

Hopefully I'll just get used to the proper way. XD I'd like to learn it better. =3

Sho-Shonojo 09-21-2008 08:19 PM

I'm pretty good when it comes to typing. Every now and then I have to look down and check where I am to make sure that I'm in the right place, but other than that I'm pretty good. I'll have an off day where I can't type for anything, but that doesn't happen that often. I'm not saying I'm one hundred percent accurate. I use the backspace key a lot, I can just type fast.

Captain Howdy 09-21-2008 10:21 PM

Years and years of computer use has trained my fingers as where to go. So I don't type all that fast, but at a good rate. It's my brain that's the slow one. :B I used to have to actually look down at the keyboard, but I don't anymore. I do make typos all the time though, but my clever fingers automatically back track and correct them as soon as they're done. ... The ones I catch, anyway. :ninja:

Sforzando 09-21-2008 10:23 PM

I usually have a 50 to 60 gwam. I can type around 40 gwma without looking, but otherwise type pretty fast while looking at teh keyboard. I usually look at it, but sometimes my brothers are talking to me and I cant listen to them without looking at tehm. So i'd say thats a listening deficiency, not typing. If it makes you feel better, I sucked for my first couple of typing classes. the only reason I got better is because the class was a semester long an I'm on the computer practically every spare moment I have.

ARGY 09-21-2008 10:53 PM

IndiGlo your not the only one who chicken pecks. I happen to be very crap at typing but when I'm on the computer for a while my technique becomes better. I look at the keyboard and still know what I am typing. I'm still pretty fast that way. But if I have sometime off the computer my technique goes out the window and takes me about anhour and a half to pick it back up.

sun_spirit 09-22-2008 12:49 AM

Oh gosh yes. I used to use pretty much only my middle fingers to type. Looking back on that now, I don't really know how I pulled that off. It wasn't until I took an Intro to Computers class in High School that I learned to properly type. I had this INSANE teacher who would freak out if she saw you typing incorrectly as she walked around the room. Out of an intense fear of this woman, I went home and practiced typing correctly whenever I had the time. Now I have a pretty speedy typing rate. =D

Queen Fool 09-22-2008 01:29 AM

I don't have to look at the screen when I'm typing on my keyboard, nor do I have to look when I'm typing on my phone (I have a keyboard on my phone).

Weeshaaaa 09-22-2008 04:05 AM

No offence, but I havn't chicken pecked since I was like.. 10-11.

I've had a computer for a long time and I'm on it quite often, it'd be pretty sad if I did still chicken peck.

I aced all three years in keyboarding/computer classes I have. With over a 90WPM average. :B I don't have to look at the keyboard or anything. Though with fast typing comes a lot of spelling errors. D:

Demetria 09-22-2008 07:56 AM

My typing skills are pretty average. I owe it to my mom, who's a good typist, and my few years on the internet. My speed is just ok for me, it's much faster than my writing speed.
But there's lots of people who can't type even though they're quite old, so you're not alone. The look and peck thing makes you slow. A little practice would be a good thing.
:)

jellysundae 09-22-2008 08:53 AM

Even with having used a computer for over 8 years. I haven't gained any skills. One day I annoyed myself by making myself watch the screen whilst typing. I'm half making myself do it now while I'm replying here. I know where the letters are, but I get frustrated with it after a while when I starting hitting the key on either side instead of the one I actually wanted.

Also, I often find I'm typing with the the first three fingers of my left hand and use my left thumb for the space bar. But I'm just really uncomfortable with even attempting to uncurl the other fingers on my right hand and get more than the index finger in motion, it just feels completely strange to me.

When I do make myself do it. I find I end up using my right hand for the E and the S and dumbass stuff like that :XD

[L]ove[H]ate 09-22-2008 10:01 AM

I would still be chicken pecking it but I took a keyboarding class my freshman year and ever since then, I can't chicken peck anymore. It's really impossible. It takes a lot of practice though.
