Binge Eating Contest, lethal?

Here is a pretty awesome article about some kid who died trying to win (and was winning) an eating contest in Taiwan.
He was gonna win $60, until he vomited and keeled over onto his plate.

I know a whole bunch of people are gonna go "awww," but I actually laughed. :poke:

Social Darwinism anybody?

So, whats the point of binge eating contests, anyway? Why do people eat so much, for... really such a measly prize? Can anyone explain this bizarre phenomena to me?

On a side note, what are some of the stupidest ways you've ever heard of anybody dying?

Wynna 10-25-2008 05:23 PM

I heard about a lady who died by consuming too much water. She was in a water drinking contest for a Wii...I think? And she died.

We had a pumpkin pie eating contest yesterday in the cafeteria for free dance tickets....I organized it. We usually have a good turn out for it. A couple of kids threw up though.

A little 10 year old kid dies on a beach near Evertt, he pretended to be Garra from Naruto so his friends buried his head in the sand. He died.
As horrible as this was me and my friend laughed a bit about it. Though after thinking about it I don't know why a 10 year old boy would do that, at that age you would think they would know they need to breathe to survive.

Over eating for little prizes is a waste of time, money, and food. Plus it is dangerous, countess people have died from eating contests by choaking and their body overloading.

Rhoswin 10-25-2008 05:59 PM

Wynna: I heard about that lady and the Wii! Oh, how ridiculous! Nintendo probably felt a little bad though.

And thats gross. :insane:
I'd never join an eating contest! Especially with people vomiting!

Endless: I'm not familiar with the characters in Naruto. Does Garra often bury his head in the sand?

Endless-Void 10-25-2008 06:05 PM

Rhoswin: Yeah, it's a sad way to die.

Wynna 10-25-2008 07:09 PM

....Ostriches bury their heads in the sand too..

Lost_Ninja9213 10-25-2008 07:11 PM

No, Gaara is too busy being cool. He controls sand, and covers himself in it. Maybe he has tiny breathing holes.
I read of a blackbelt who wanted to prove himself against lions. He died, obviously. I read it in Life of Pi, I think.

Rhoswin 10-25-2008 07:29 PM

Ninja: Huh? Life of Pi was a novel, and there wasn't anything about blackbelts in that book!

Lost_Ninja9213 10-25-2008 07:52 PM

In the first part, he was talking about how dangerous the big cats were, since he lived in a zoo. His father showed them how dangerous tigers were when he put a goat in the tiger's cage.
Here's the part in the book, right after the tiger.
"Father led us to the lions and leopards. "Once there was a madman in Australia who was a black-belt in karate. He wanted to prove himself against the lions. He lost. Badly. The keepers found only half his body in the morning."

yech. That guy was stupid.

Rhoswin 10-25-2008 08:43 PM

Oh, it was only in the beginning, thats why I don't remember it.

I think thats just for the story though, I don't think that actually happened. xD

Zombie Meat Pie 10-25-2008 10:19 PM

It kind of sad what humans do to them self. I think humans are the only spices that can pull stuff like this.

Rhoswin 10-25-2008 10:24 PM

We're the only species who would want to at least! And for only $60! Yeesh.

Lost_Ninja9213 10-26-2008 04:05 AM

I always thought the book was non-fiction, but I just looked at the front of the book. It says fiction. I'm a little disappointed. It'd be cool if the story actually happened.

Kah Hilzin-Ec 10-26-2008 04:23 AM

I heard the story of the woman who tried to win a Wii but died from drinking too much water >.>'' She was called Jennifer Strange [isn't this ironic?]
The case of Christine Chubbuck is... weird too o.o People with mental disorders tend to die in the most weird ways xP
The kid who tried to bury himself in sand pretending to be Gaara, I thought he did it in a sandbox? xP I'm pretty sure it was disscused in the General Disscussion o.o
Stupidiest way to die... I don't remember any stories right now >.< However the case of a schizophrenic pushing a deaf-mute guy in front of a train in Barcelona came to my mind x_x'

PS: Life of Pi...?

::EDITcough:: This isn't recent, yet's the first time I've heard of something like this O_o'''

Austrian Hans Steininger was famous for having the world’s longest beard (it was 4.5 feet or nearly 1.4 m long) and for dying because of it.

One day in 1567, there was a fire in town and in his haste Hans forgot to roll up his beard. He accidentally stepped on his beard, lost balance, stumbled, broke his neck and died!
Seriously, WTF?!

Rhoswin 10-26-2008 01:25 PM

Kah- :headdesk: The ways some people die just amaze me.

And if you haven't read Life of Pi, and if you like reading, you should pick up that book. Beautiful story. :)

Wynna 10-26-2008 07:37 PM

Well historically, wasn't it polite for Romans when eating to throw-up?

Rhoswin 10-26-2008 07:41 PM

Hahahahaha, what?

Thats... thats gross.

5 liters of water or more can make your blood so thin you'll die. :o
I don't get why no one knows or researches these facts before setting up something as idiotic as that ?

Rhoswin 10-26-2008 09:50 PM

Arousal: I think because everyone has it set to firmly in their heads that water is good for you, and life strives with water, and whatever else, they don't assume that it could ever be bad for you?

I know I was surprised when I heard about that! I was like, "Wait... water? :o"

x3

Arousal 10-26-2008 09:54 PM

it's really sad though, she had 3 kids who she probably wanted to win the Wii for. :C

this reminds me of a girl who ate magic mushrooms and then "saw" a mountain in front of her window so she jumped out to climb it and died.

people do really dumb things, not saying i've never done anything that stupid though.

Rhoswin 10-26-2008 10:20 PM

I think it's obvious you've never done anything that stupid, you're alive!

But wait... the girl with the shrooms... How did anyone know why she jumped out, if she was dead? Was someone with her at the time?

Wynna 10-27-2008 07:58 PM

@ Arousal, because who would want to eat so much that you'd die. Like I don't think people are making them eat, people know their limits...and dying of too much water intake...how often does that happen?

Joico 10-27-2008 10:52 PM

Suff like that makes me so mad. Why would you do that for $60. Like that is crazyness. I could see if it was like a 20000 or even 5000 price. But $60. If you work for a day or two at min wage you can make more than that easily.

Wynna 10-27-2008 11:02 PM

...so you wouldn't do something so easy as eating for $60? Because I know that I would...I wouldn't push myself to die though.

Rhoswin 10-27-2008 11:36 PM

I certainly wouldn't do it for $60!
I hate the feeling of being too full, and it's such a small sum of money to me, it's just not worth it.
