That may or may not be true. If you don't vote because of it however, you're basically green-lighting that kind of corruption and allowing it to continue. The world has never been changed through apathy; we must act if we want things to change. Voting may not be much, but it is action.
Also, if you don't exercise your rights, they go away.
Anyway, I voted.

I voted for the first time this morning (unless you count the primaries). Everyone there kept congratulating me on being a first time voter while I was there since there weren't a lot of people there when I went. I felt like a celebrity. XD

Personal opinion, I don't think it would change anything. As my fiance say's just go for the person that will lie to you the least. That's saying something. But I live in Canada so I don't matter. I don't vote here either anyways.

Voting used to be considered a civic duty. People didn't question whether or not they wanted to go down and vote. It was their duty and they did it.
I have never voted before this year, but I decided that it was time I did. I didn't vote today because I did a mail in ballot a few weeks ago. I did go with my sister to her polling place though.
I'm sitting here typing this and from the other room I hear on NBC news that Obama has won, 284 to 146.

Did I mention that I want to jump up and down and scream happily?
That's there too.

Right da fuhhh on.
I'm not old enough to vote, either way Obama won, so that's good.
However, I live in California, and I'm still waiting to see how Proposition 8 turns out. What a load of bullshit.. :|

5% of precincts reporting, but so far it's winning by 53%, and I hope I hope I hope dear God I hope that it won't pass. I don't know which segments of the state are reporting, so it's hard to know.
That's on my list of volunteer issues for the coming year. I refuse to rest if it passes.
Aside: Prop 4 in CA is at a dead 50/50 right now.

I'm not from the US but I just wanted to say I agree with Chexala on this. Not even voting is not caring at all about the outcome - which also means you have no right to bitch about it afterwards, since you didn't even try to affect it. If you turn up and turn in an empty ballot, that's still saying something. That's saying you don't like any of the options.
I think it should still be a civic duty to vote. This is your country we're talking about, and your future. You really should care.
Also, hurrah for Obama! I'll admit I'm not too well informed on either one of them, but McCain sounds like an ass, and Palin sounds like an even bigger ass, so even if Obama has his faults, he's definitely the better of two evils. Now let's hope he does a good job of this. : )

EDIT: @ Aislin: Ugh, are you serious? That makes me incredibly sad. ;_;
Prop 4 is a real surprising one, but to respect the teenagers that it affects, I would rather not have that one pass.
A Yes on Prop 4 would require all underage teenage females to tell their parents that they're getting an abortion.
@ Ljos: you'll be surprised at how big an ass Palin is. xD

@ Ljos: I wish I knew.. my only guess is that there are enough people just as super-conservative as her to put her in office positions and whatnot. D:

But.. it's not just that she's really conservative. I can deal with that, a lot of people are super conservative and although I'm not very fond of conservative views in general, I can in some ways relate and understand them.
But everything she says is absolute shit. I mean.. does it actually mean anything? I want to know how that brain of her works, because something in there is not connecting right. People tell me she's considered attractive (which I can't see, but maybe that's just because I've heard her talk already) and maybe she got away with not knowing anything because of that?
This seriously boggles my mind.
(And I'm off to sleep, as I should've been five hours ago. >.o Hope those scary Propositions go well.)

You know, I actually believe that many conservatives are wonderful people-- just not Sarah Palin. She's extreme, ill-informed, and ridiculously self-assured for someone with absolutely no knowledge of foreign affairs or economic policy.
I hope, for the sake of both her party and this country, that she doesn't become of future leader of the Republicans.
More than an issue of respect for the young women concerned, I think that proposition 4 would also put many teen girls in danger. From 1-11 I grew up in a very, very unhealthy environment, and from personal experience I can say that a good portion of the young women who become pregnant at a young age also cannot safely afford to give that information to their parents.
Moreover, the court process suggested to address this problem would be lengthy enough to subvert the entire issue. At a basic level, I believe that the writers of Prop 4 are anti- Roe v. Wade overall. This is merely the most that they could hope to pass in CA.
Prop 8:
Quote:
As of 10:55 p.m. in returns from polls throughout California, Proposition 8, which would prohibit same-sex marriages, has tightened from early returns and now has 52.4% of the vote.
As of 10:55 p.m., the state of California reported 2,122,686 votes (52.4%) for Yes on 8 while 1,927,297 (47.6%) have voted against the measure.
However, according to CNN.com, Proposition 8 appears to be going down to a narrow 52 percent to 48 percent defeat in California exit polls reported thus far tonight.
|
EDIT: note that not all precincts have yet reported. Still gonna be a looong night.

WHOOHOOOO!
I voted for Obama. =D
I didn't vote on all of the propositions, because I didn't research all of them. I researched the props that I voted on, and made a educated decision. I'm not going into my reasons now, but I'll give you a rundown.
I voted:
Obama
Benoit for congress (go libertarians!)
Yes on 2
No on 4
Yes on 7
Yes on 8

Ooooh, impressive! You don't meet many yes on 7s, given the coalition against it.
My motivation was the Gore call for a complete revamp to renewable sources of energy. The coalition against it had many reasons which I felt were either a.) valid but ill-prioritized given the current situation, or b.) invalid and based on self-interest. It doesn't look like the proposition will pass, but I expected that.
I know that the proposition is extreme, but with regards to energy I think extreme might be necessary.
What was your reasoning?
