Well, I convinced my Mom that it was time for a change. Esp. with that new DTV transition coming up in February, which I might add is completely unfair to low income families.

Anywho, on Saturday we bought a 42" plasma tv and a stand/mount for it. I put it together myself with the help of my Mom. My finger still hurt, as do my shoulders But it's totally worth it. We completely changed the look of our family room adding a pair of palms in for good measure. When it came time to lift up the tv to the mount, I almost died, it was so freaking heavy. But also worth it.

Behold:

Have any of you guys bought a new tv for the transition?

btw: I know my grammar is wrong in the title:P

Well Suicidal_Sal, I am exceptionally scared.

I have that exact same TV. Though we used the spinning hilt stand that came with it. XD

And we have a glass and metal stand holding the dvds and stuff.
And moved the old 32" hdtv SHARP tv into my bedroom. It's my current PC monitor. XD

I got a new TV a few years ago that's supposed to be good for HD tv and all that. It's tiny though. I don't use it much since I hardly watch TV to begin with.

I still have old televisions. I don't watch television so the changeover doesn't really affect me. Also if I want TV, Cable isn't affected by the switch. It's just the antenna TVs that are affected.

LOL, I just don't get the need to have such massive televisions, mine is ancient and regular human-sized, 26 inch screen. I can't afford to upgrade to a digital TV, so I got a Digibox instead with means I can now pick up all the Freeview channels. £40 seems a lot more reasonable than £400 to me...

I'm thinking about going and buying a new t.v. for my bedroom. The one I currently have won't work when the switch to all digital rolls around, which sucks. I think it's unfair to everyone, who the h**l do the people in the government think they are telling us we have to have digital, at least they are paying for the converters. There is a cable hook up in my son's room, if that works, I'll move my old t.v. into his room so he can watch Naruto on Saturday night without driving the rest of us nuts. I also have to find out how much it will cost to have cable put into my daughter's room so she can't whine about her younger brother having cable when she doesn't.

No new TV for me - I just got the coupon that lets me get the digital converter box for free . . so really the transition isn't unfair to low income families at all

@ jellysundae: lol, "regular human-sized" that was funny. The one before this one was 25".

While the government is helping out by paying for approx. two converter boxes, I still think it's unfair. Some low-income families (such as my own) have three or maybe four televisions.

I have three, one in my room, one in my brother's and one in the family room. Well, we replaced the third tv *(family room), so that's not a problem. And we're paying it a little at a time (thank you Best Buy  ) the others are using the converter box.

Sweet television. Mines way smaller than yours, but I can't get anything bigger since there would be no room to put it. My current TV is hanging up above my fireplace so their is a limited amount of space that can be used.

And my dad did all that TV transition stuff years ago. xD

TV is not a necessity and the government is not taking away anything that is necessary for living - TV is a luxury and a home with 2 TVs is more than some people can afford.

But I also think people are too reliant on TV - my home has 1 TV that is probably at least 10 years old - the cost of more/ upgrades is not worth it to me and I get cranky when people are annoyed/ cranky about not having huge amazing TVs when they should be thankful that they can afford to have Tv and electricity and food.

Don't mind me .. . it's late and I'm tired and cranky.

My sister's boyfriend bought us a new TV, not because of the transition, though. He thought our other TV was too little. We got one of those coupons and are going to go buy one of those converter boxes. We just got our coupon in mail yesterday.

I don't watch television much anyways... All I watch anymore is Heroes, everything else I wait for it to come out on DVD and then I'll rent/borrow/buy it. I spend most of my time either reading, at church, or on the internet anyways. xD

But as for being grateful siaasgn said, I'm extremely grateful for the things I have. I moved to America when I was a kid and my life is so much better than that of my cousin's in Mexico who have not have the same education and opportunities, commodities and so forth. But sometimes I can't really enjoy my stuff 'cause I'm sick all the time. (which I should be grateful I have health insurance)

Sorry to rant, I am also in a bad mood. Oh to be healthy. v.v *sigh*

Hmm, interesting. Your previous post Sal, where you state that..
Quote:
Some low-income families (such as my own) have three or maybe four televisions.
That's kind of a paradox to me, if you're low income, you can't afford multiplies of luxury items such as TVs. Or maybe that's just me looking at this from my generation's viewpoint?

Today, it's normal for even "poor" families to have a TV in each of the kid's bedrooms maybe. I didn't get a TV in my room until I was old enough to have a job and I had to buy it myself. Just a 14" portable with a wire aerial, and I've still got it 20 years later, and it still works. Though, shock horror, you have to get off your butt and go change the channel manually! No remote control back then!

But I think it is a generational thing, both myself and Siaasgn are looking at this the same way, as we're people who were teenagers in the 80s when kids didn't feel so entitled to have their own TV and so on, it was pretty unheard of back then, unless your family was really affluent. Where as now kids expect to have a whole slew of expensive electronics, regardless of how much, or little, money the family has.

Thank you Jelly- you put it better than I could last night . . . it really is a generational thing - I got a 19 inch Tv as a Christmas gift when I was 16 - that was pretty much all I got that year besides some clothes and it was a really big deal to have my own Tv in my room (I still have that TV - it's in my basement somewhere because we hot a 26 inch hand me down - but that little TV served me well through school and college).

Now it's just assumed that you have a TV in every room of the house and it's just frustrating and confusing to me that people (no one person in particular -this is a broad generalization) just don't appreciate what they have because there's always something bigger and better that they apparently should have.

People look at me like I'm a mutant when I say we don't have cable and we only have 1 TV in my house . . but I don't see the big deal. I've actually had people tell me that I would be putting my kids at a disadvantage by not having cable and TV for them (guess it's a good thing I don't have any kids )
