I didn't hear about this, but then again, I don't watch the news much anymore.

Guivre 02-16-2009 06:59 PM

That's disturbing.

No one should be loling at anyone, especially until a decent explanation is given. There's really no way to tell what is causing something when you only have a little fragment of information like a sound or a flash.

That would be interesting if it was parts from those satellites that were damages, like the picture posted up on Drudgereport.com today.

Holy cow! I hadn't even heard of any of this til I read this thread today!Pretty scary thought.....satellites and and meteors crashing to earth...so many things could happen on their way down and anyone of us could be next to die from an odd accident like one of those.

Fireball in Sky
Identified

Created On: Sunday, 15 Feb 2009, 1:12 PM CST

DALLAS - The fireball that blazed across the Texas sky and sparked numerous weekend calls to law enforcement agencies now can be considered an identified flying object.

The Federal Aviation Administration said Monday the fireball was a natural phenomenon -- not flying space junk -- and a North Texas astronomer said more specifically that it was probably a pickup truck-sized meteor with the consistency of concrete.

The object was visible Sunday morning from Austin to Dallas and into East Texas. In Central Texas, the Williamson County sheriff's office received so many emergency calls that it sent a helicopter aloft to look for debris from a plane crash.

The FAA backed off its weekend claim that the fireball possibly was caused by falling debris from colliding satellites plummeting into earth's atmosphere.

SATELLITE THEORY

The U.S. Strategic Command said there was no connection to the sightings over Texas and Tuesday's collision of satellites from the U.S. and Russia.

"There is no correlation between the debris from that collision and those reports of re-entry," said Maj. Regina Winchester, with STRATCOM.

The FAA notified pilots on Saturday to be aware of possible space debris after a collision Tuesday between U.S. and Russian communication satellites. The chief of Russia's Mission Control says clouds of debris from the collision will circle Earth for thousands of years and threaten numerous satellites.

lmao, I wonder how many pieces have to fall before they can't say 'It was only a metorite!'

the Astral Waterlily 02-17-2009 03:52 AM

Wow, that's creepy! Nothing like that happens here. I wonder if I should be jealous or grateful...

Nostalgic Trance 02-17-2009 05:00 AM

That is really crazy, I wouldn't know what to think if there were loud explosion noises going around where I live. Only noises here are city noises. Aliens and military jets must not like the traffic here.

SonicSweeti 02-19-2009 01:36 AM

I watch the news alot and I didnt hear about this. I like mysterious stuff though. Hopefully noone or nothing was hurt. Sounds like it was alien though *hides*

Sayhn 02-19-2009 02:01 AM

i dont think i would notice something like that unless it was reeeeeeally loud, i live near an airport and we hear the planes all the time, you can tell how big are small they are by how much noise they make lol

sounds like it was really wierd

Guivre 02-19-2009 11:30 PM

It's funny how you can get used to noises like that. I live right in O'Hare's flight path and when I went and lived somewhere else for a couple months last summer, I was like, gosh where's all the planes? Don't they have planes here?

Morwyn 02-19-2009 11:40 PM

This is really odd O.o;; I live in North Eastern KY... My husband thinks he remembers a bang or something that night, but I really can't remember anything at all. *shrug* Would be cool if it was aliens, though XD But I'm of the opinion that if aliens wanted to make themselves known, there'd be nothing that our government could do to cover it up XD I know... I'm odd...

CK 02-20-2009 11:56 PM

I'm rather disturbed by the bit in the quote near the bottom of page two where the collision between the two satellites means that for thousands of year, debris will threaten other satellites and how pilots (regular airplane pilots) should be aware of possible space debris shooting down at them. There's a site out there that tracks every piece of space junk up there. It's kind of interesting, let me see if I can find it. Of course I can't remember the name because that would make it simple to find.

Edit --

Here it is.

Well, I'm not sure if it's exactly the one I remember, but it seems to be all the right info.
