Donators and donatees
If you go walking down the street and you see a poor man or woman asking for money...usually if you are a nice person or you care, you give them money or buy them some food etc...
Now when it comes to online donations...why do you ask so much from people to be donated? isnt it like the same? I wonder about this because I have a chairty here and in other sites and people always tell me how cool and different my charity is because we do not ask for 100000000000 things to be donated, we barely have a form to keep track of the person's wishes so we can help...no I'm not saying my charity is wonderful, we do what we can but....why is it that the mayority of people who have charities or donate put so many restrictions or conditions ? I know gold and items are hard to ear but...lets go back to the first sentence...when you see someone on the streets you dont start asking for posts or ask what did they do with their jobs or ask them to talk to you on daily basis...you just donate ...and you do that from the heart with no questions....right? Now question is....why is it so hard to do the same online? |
Honestly, when I donate online, I don't give to people who beg. I'll go into the new members forum(fresh meat)and I'll find someone who ISN'T asking for help. It's the people who just want to meet new people or who are just looking for a few ways to EARN their gold, that I like. It shows that they are willing are to work for it, and they aren't asking for people to just give them things.
These are the people who stick out in my mind and who I give to. And it has yet to happen, but I always try to get at least two sets of the event items. One for me, of course. And the second I keep on the chance that I come across someone who missed the event for whatever reason and is bummed that they didn't get the stuff. Like I said, it hasn't happened yet(although I'm sure plenty of people do miss the events), but in the case that I even do chat with anyone who missed it(and providing I can figure out to donate items)I would give the set to them. I just can't stand people who beg and want people to just give them stuff right off. |
yeah well begging is out of the question but...sometimes I even donate to those I try to teach them though that is not a good way but stilll....sometimes I put in their shoes and think....it must be hard to ask for gold (even I know it is not for youngies) idk it is a difficult topic

I don't give money to poor people. Because they could do drugs with that money.

People donate by the kindness of heart and expect nothing back. If people can't do that online, then they cant do it in person. Now, members of websites should not be expected to donate. Though people think that anyone who has more of a wealth then they do, they should be donating some of it to users who are new, not as wealthy, been banned. Whatever reason they hold to try to justify why people should. Now, it is all based on the kindness of peoples heart. I know when I donate to people it isn't cause they ask for it. They are hardworking individuals who deserve it. They don't beg. They don't expect donations.

Donating money in real life and donating money online are two completely different things, it's not even remotely comparable.
You give people money in real life because they need it; for food, drink, shelter etc. People don't need donations online, they just want it. It'd be like giving your hard-earned money to someone in the street so they can buy a Gucci handbag. Sure, in real life you might buy gifts for your friends, or people who you think deserve it... this is the same way I donate online; only to people I like. But if some complete stranger came up to you in real life, and said; "Hey! You look rich. Can I have £500 for some designer shoes?" You wouldn't say; "Sure! You're less fortunate than me! Why not?" You'd say: "No. Piss off." |
Online, everyone has the same chance to make gold (excluding really good artists who can make much more). Anyone can post or play a game. In the real world, getting a job isn't so easy.
So since everyone has an equal opportunity online, donators feel the need to be a little bit more choosy. Also, you need to make sure the person is going to be dedicated to the site. In the real world, unless you die, you're stuck here. So if someone gives you money, you'll use it, and you'll most likely use whatever you buy with it. Online, you could give someone who just joined 500 gold, but then two days later they decide they don't like the site and leave and your 500g was wasted. So the hoops you have to jump through are also to assure that you'll be sticking around for a while. EDIT: Also, what Cherish above me said about want vs. need. I had forgotten that. |
It's in NO way the same thing. ._.
Homeless people are starving and have no place to call their own. People online just want something, it's not a life or death situation. It's just a want. They can live without it. And once they get it they'll probably get tired of it after a few months. I donate to people online, and homeless people. But it depends on what their dream avi looks like[Gaia], if it's hideous then I rationalize that they are just going to change it later on and my donation would be pretty much pointless. |
Whenever I see people on the street asking for money I'm always hesitant about whether or not to donate. I'm fully aware that they could be homeless through no fault of their own, but they could also be homeless because they spend all their money on gambling/alcohol/drugs. So I usually donate my time, instead of my money, at shelters and soup kitchens. Then I know that what I am doing will positively affect those I am helping.
I've been donated to online before on other sites. It rarely happens though because I generally don't post alot because I'm a lurker by nature (which is why it's hard for me to earn gold here xD ). One time though, on Gaia, I decided to start this trade up quest. I started with this very inexpensive item and I was hoping to trade it up for something a little bit more expensive, and trade that item up, etc., until I got an ancient katana, which was worth probably 85-100k at the time. A few days after making a banner in my sig, I receive a trade from someone giving me the katana in exchange for my cheap starting item. :) |
I think people should try to work hard and get things on their own, so when they finally get what they want it will be all that much better. Being handed things is nice once in a while, but giving to be people you don't know is always a bit awkward. I think online on websites like this there is no need for people to beg and ask others for donations, I think it's just fine slowly saving up for what you need. Charity is a confusing thing, sometimes I wonder how much good it actually does people.

Well, from my personal experience it comes down to one thing: honesty. People are far less honest on the Internet. Not to say that people don't look you in the eye and lie to you all the time in real life, but many times even the most honest person will have a fudge party on the Internet in some way shape or form. I have seen it on other sites where people donate to people who are new and are taken advantage of by people who go out and make a new avatar just to get something. I have seen it where people do nothing to work for any gold whatsoever, but expect anyone they beg to for gold to throw them some change.
To me, there is also a big difference when comparing a beggar in real life to a beggar online. Nothing you beg for is needed online. It is only what you want. Begging in real life is a real situation that merits thought and proper action. |
