Cats and Dogs get along?
I know there's a stereotype saying cats and dogs hate each other but that's not true mister!
I have a Silky Terrier named Silky (don't ask I didn't name her) and a cat named Winston the 3rd (I didn't name him either). As you see, the dog is a girl and the cat is a guy. They get along really well..But the thing is my dog has been with cats her entire life so that's probably the reason why. But i don't think it's because the cat's a guy because i have a gray hound named raptor (saved from the racing track) and he's a guy but Silky hates him so it's a little confusing... Discuss: - Cats and dogs getting along ~or~ -Different Pets getting along |
My dogs and cats hate each other. But, I guess that because we keep getting new dogs while we have older dogs who have grown up chasing the cats. The new dogs learn that it's fun to chase cats and the cats continue to hate the dogs. I don't think it will ever change until I can get my dogs to live in peace with a cat. Of course, I don't think my cats will ever get over of their hate of being chased by cats, so I'd probably have to get a new kitten and teach it to live with the dog.

Yeah that can be a problem..How many pets do you have? |
I used to keep my dogs - Bo and Spot - in seperate households, so they didn't really 'know eachother'. We had to bring Bo over to where Spot is, 'cause Bo's an outside dog, and it's in the wide open country. :)
THEY WOULD NOT STOP FIGHTING. Boy dogs, do not get along. It took a few months to get them settled, though, and now they're kinda buddies. They still get in fights over food, but we seperate the bowls, hoping that'll help. The wierd thing is, I think Bo's taken dominance. |
I know that when we had cats and dogs at my mom's they didn't get along.
But there was one time where the cat and dog didn't mind each other. The dog just wanted to play with them anyway. I know it's possible for them to get along, it's just not something you see everyday. |
Um.. I'm not sure you want the answer to that question Jennevecia.
I've got three dogs, three cats, two chinchillas, a rabbit, and a parrot. Two dogs, one of the cats, and the chinchillas are the only ones that are officially mine though. @Dorkfish. I wouldn't say that boy dogs don't get along at all. All of my dogs are male, and while they weren't very fond of each other at first, they are friends now and can tolerate each other and even play together sometimes. They probably just don't like each other because they are being brought into the other's territory. It is good that they're kind of getting along now. Fights over food are bound to happen. It still happens at my house sometimes. Actually, it's kind of funny, but one time my younger dog didn't eat all of his food and let the older dog eat it, like he was saving it for him or something. |
Oh yes for dogs and cats at times. Sometimes a dog will niurse kittens and a cat will nurse puppies.

My cat panda likes my dogs, but my cat mewmew hates dogs.
panda is a nice cat, but mewmew is evil lol |
I think there are definitely two factors influencing this - their personality and if they've been brought up with other animals from a young age. The whole nature VS nurture debate. I've had animals that from day one displayed a very alpha disposition and weren't open to the idea of having to share space. Saying that though, given they're a young age and with time they can learn to get along, although they don't really look like they enjoy it much at times.
Saying that, my mom has a poodle who *loves* to play and at first wasn't around cats, but now he will play with the kitties and it is soo cute to watch him and my mom's big orange cat sit and play amicably with each other!! He just loves attention and he will love on anyone. Ohhh I could steal that dog in a heartbeat he's so sweet. <3 |
My dog and cats get along really well. Considering how they were when we first had the cats, when Patch (the dog) was just over a year old, still a puppy, wanting to chase and maim anything he could. We never thought they'd get to the stage of peaceful co habitation.
Now though, 6 years down the line, and they're fine. The cats will run right under the dogs nose, and he doesn't bother. There are times when he gets excitable, and will chase them, but it's not malicious. |
My dog and kitties get along strangely well.
I have a St. Bernard, she's a year old and goes by Audrey. xD We got her at four months and she had never before been around cats, so it was quite the experience. My cats were terrified for the first four weeks and would only slink downstairs to use the litterbox when they needed to. While I knew it would be a difficult adjustment, the fact is, we got my cats at four weeks old (they came from a tough household) and they were around a dog for the whole of their younger years. They're both seven now. After a while, Thomas, the braver of the two finally began to make friends with Audrey. Cally, my skittish little sausage, followed a while after. Now they're the best of buddies. Thomas naps on her bed and while Cally is still a little stingy with her, they get along alright as well. Audrey wasn't the healthiest of puppies and everytime she went to the vet or had surgery she would come home and "tell" Thomas about what happened. Last time she went she had an ear infection and when she came home Thomas lifted her ears with his teeth. He also pets her and scratches her back (he never uses his nails) and plays with her tail as she walks by. It's adorable. xD |
It depends on the animals personality and their training and, I'm assuming, how they grew up. Grew up with dogs = probably fine with dogs (depending on personality)
My cat doesn't get along with any other animals, even other cats. She did have one kitty friend once but she was the one and only. I like this video though. So cute! |

That sounds exactly like our dear Cinnamon. She's a kitty that unless she wants affection from anyone she will come to you. I often see her and Mog getting in little quarrels over gosh knows what. She's declawed though, and Mog hasn't tried to actually hurt her...just chase her around the house. I swear the cat hates me though. Apparently she did a total mood adjustment when I moved in, and it's only since she's realized she's either got to have the 'beat them or join em' mentality that she's settled down a bit. She's a neurotic cat, I swear. |
@ kokoso: that is so cute!!! I never really seen animals play with each other like that except for in movies and t.v. shows..

My dog and cat snuggle up to eachother all the time. =] Sometimes when the cat is in a bad mood, she'll swat the puppy away, but for the most part they play nicely. I have a second dog that isn't fond of my cat at all, though. Cats and dogs don't always get along, but my puppy sure loves my cat. =3

My cat hates both my dogs. My Havanese hates my cat. My golden doesn't seem to acknowledge that cat's existance, except when treating him with a fearful respect, like when he waits for the cat to get off the stairs before he uses them.
But I've seen plenty of dogs and cats getting along like they're best friends. My own cat has had a few temporary changes of heart where he's slept next to my golden, even though he hates him again a few hours later. As for relationships between other pets... before my bird died, she and my Havanese were the best of friends. When we had her out of her cage, the dog would come sit by whoever was holding her. Sometimes when she was in her cage, she would just start freaking out and squaking, and wherever he was in the house, the Havanese would come running and try to comfort her by dancing around her cage until she calmed down. And he chased the cat away from her one plenty of occasions. It was so sweet. |
I've always had cats and had a dog for 9 years, all six cats we've had got along with him (two ran away, they were outdoor cats). My cat Bobi (girl) was actually gotten right after we got out Dog (Duke) and they're practically married. :) It's so cute.

It really depends.
I believe if they were to grow up together, they'd get along just fine. |
-chuckles- Cat's and dogs could get along just fine if given the opportunity.
Although.. last spring my dad had come in from Alberta to visit with our dog Shadow, he's lived with cat's before but whenever he sees a new one he has the need to chase them or bark at them at least. Well I had a new cat at home and Shadow at first reacted by a bark because he was good enough to stop when I warned him. Atreiyu (my cat) didn't like him at all. Especially when Shadow likes to sleep with me in bed and Atreiyu likes to do the same. Somehow they'd come to an agreement, but Shadow was scared of Atreiyu and the siamese was still considered a kitten and MUCH smaller than him. He's a German Shepard cross Rottweiler. Although the dog was eating the cat's food all the time!! Went through an entire bag of cat food in a week to attempt to make sure the kitty was getting enough! Though I had walked in on Atreiyu eating Shadow's food (which is adult dog food so.. even one piece he had to spend minutes breaking through with his teeth.) and it was like they decided to switch food bowls or something! |
For the most part dogs and cats are alright if they have been around each other before,
however my two cats I have had the longest despise my mom's Shar Pei, which if I remember correctly she has actually had for a shorter amount of time? Even if not, they have been around each other 4+ years and still don't like each other. But my third cat used to sleep next to and play fight with my other dog no problem. I also had a dog growing up who would go out of his way to murder cats, but when we brought home a kitten for a while he didn't mind at all. |
I have a 75-pound pit bull mix living in my house with four cats. She loves them to no end - and though she annoys the crap out of them sometimes, they love her too.
It's amusing beyond all belief how they've injured her and she's never hurt them at all. The cats have been around dogs their whole lives. The dog, we got when she was four months old, and she took to them right away.Never had any problems with them. Worst recurring issue we have with them is when the dog wants to play and the cats don't. Usually ends in the dog getting her nose scratched. And people still think cats and dogs aren't supposed to get along. |
I never had a problem with my cats and dogs hating each other. My cats are used to other animals being around since I've always taken them places ever since they were young so dogs don't phase them. That's a bad thing because we baby sit my aunt's dog and he doesn't like cats and ends up biting my cats sometimes because my cats just don't have any fear of dogs.

I've seen it. I don't have a dog but my cat Oliver got along with the hamsters, mice, and birds we have had.
