That's... very weird.

I got some prank phone calls once, just some guy who had stolen my friend's phone, and had kept all the numbers out of it (she had the sim card de-activated) and was randomly calling us all at stupid times, like 3am.

I got rid of him, though. Every time I noticed it was his number calling, I got my dad to answer it for me, and say "hello, Sweet heart" instead of answering it myself.
Then my brothers got in a really silly mood one night, and kept calling him up and farting down the phone.

He stopped calling after that.

We're on something called the Telephone Preference Service which has cut down 99.99% of the calls. Once some double glazing company rang saying they'd done a survery in our area and were wondering if we wanted double glazing. I turned around and said that if the survey had been done properly, then they'd know we already had double glazing. The lady had egg on her face judging by the tone of her voice and quickly ended the call.

A track I've heard is to put the phone near the TV or a source of sound and then walk off to do something else. Apparently telemarketers aren't allowed to hang up. Death metal or any sort of loud music will do here. Jpop also works well.

I hate when they ring up right in the middle of tea. I usually tell them to give me their home number and I'll rung them when I get home from work at 4am. They soon shut up then.

Hahah . .I just remembered this- my friend got a voice mail from someone who thought he was calling a prostitute named 'Carla'. He played it for us and it had something to do with $50 and her breasts (not his exact phrasing but I won't repeat what he said here)

Well, I'm glad to hear that some people have had more humorous calls than I've had. :D

My dad always gets calls from companies with outsourcing in India. He gets extremely rude to them. :cringe:

I try not to be rude to telemarketers unless they've been calling for days. It's their job, there really isn't anything else they can do.

I have several different Lawyers' Offices/Debt Collection Agencies constantly calling my cell and leaving messages. Most are short and to the point - asking someone named Terry-something to call back. I assume that whoever previously had my number is in some serious financial trouble. I haven't gotten around to calling all them back and letting them know that I'm not who they're looking for.

One cellphone I had I got a call at 2 in the morning threatening to kill me. I just hung up on them and rolled over and went back to bed. I didn't think much of it as I figured it was just a really stupid prank call. I did however, get a call really early in the morning one morning on the phone which I didn't recognize but I picked it up and it was a friend of my dad's who had landed himself in jail for the second time due to drug related charges. I knew dad had to work in the morning so I said he wasn't available but I'd pass the message on for him. I knew he was only going to try to beg and plead that he was going to change (again) after given a chance so I didn't want to go over the top to help him. I'm sorry but I can only have so much sympathy for someone and he had been given an opportunity to clean himself up for the sake of his family and his life and he didn't.

Anyways...telemarketers I don't give a hard time as I do phone based work and I know what it's like. I just let the phone ring more often than not unless I know it's something important like an outstanding bill and I will try to negotiate with them or update them on status if it's something I can't meet. Usually bill companies will try to work with you and I think legally they really can't pursue you as long as you're paying them something...I don't know if that's set in stone or anything.

I get random phone calls about insuring my car. I'm 14, I don't drive. I got one during 5th period one day (I answered it, I was in study hall). Then in 7th period like 5 people were talking about how they got calls 5th period from the same number. Weird. And we all get texts about refinancing our houses. Freshman/Sophomores don't drive or own homes!

Oh, and before I moved we'd get a call every day at the same time from an old woman looking for someone named Dolly. I guess whoever had our number before was named Dolly...but it didn't start until a year after we got that number, so maybe not.

The strangest call i had, was from what i think was a telemarketer. They rang my mobile, yet asked for my dad. I wondered where they'd got my number from. Not knowing it by heart, i seldom wrote it down anywhere. Least of all in relation to my dad.
I took the cowards way out of talking, and pretended it was a wrong number.

I've been getting random calls from 877 and 866 area codes. Which are Toll-free area codes. Some are machines and others sound like civilians asking to get a hold of a friend O.o;; Just annoying really.

I have a cell plan with a local company that seems to have cornered the market on phone numbers with sevens in them. Due to the large number of sevens (I believe), I get a lot of wrong number calls. Most of them are looking for some girl named Krystal. I've had so many that my friend and I joked that I secretly am Krystal and just don't know it (which is not the case, I assure you). I'll give you an example of one call I received.

I leave my phone on all the time because some friends call me late. It was about 5:30 AM sometime last year when I received a call from some guy. "Is this Krystal?" I told him no, it wasn't, that he must have the wrong number. He said, "Seriously? Don't you remember me? We just left a club that we met at." I explained to him once more that I wasn't Krystal. For some odd reason, he wanted to keep talking. I was barely awake, so I didn't care and kept listening to this guy blab on. He said he'd call later, but I never heard from him again (which I considered a blessing).

Another weird call I received was from a guy asking me my age and all sorts of questions (another of those calls at like 5 AM). Then, he started calling me old. Maybe someone was trying to prank call Krystal. I hung up on the guy, and he called back and told me how rude I was for hanging up on him when I had told him it was a wrong number in the first place.

My favorite phone-related misdial was when I received a text message in Spanish from a wrong number. I knew enough Spanish to figure out that it was someone calling a person beautiful and professing undying love for that person. I'm pretty sure it wasn't meant for me.

I once answered my dorm's land line because my roomy was expecting a call from the university. We didn't have caller id back then, so I couldn't check who was calling. A creepy guy was asking for my roommate and knew her full name and what she did. I said she wasn't there. He then proceeded to ask me what I was wearing and hung up.

He called an hour later and told me some very nasty things before I hung up. By then i phoned campus police and filed a report. I was creeped out - other girls were also harassed by the same name. And what's worse was, he knew my roomy's FULL name and where we lived.

I think he kept calling for a few more days. Neither any of my roomy's nor I have answered.

Oh and I don't pick up if I don't know the number. Better be safe than sorry.

If your numbers are similar I don't think you should be scared.

Once I got a phone call on my mobile and I missed it. I called it back telling them I missed a call from their number. They said they did not know anything and that a friend was playing with their phone. Later that night they rang again and it was the same person that answered the phone when I called, this time the caller ID was private (lmao, did he forget I had his number anyway?). They start singing some drunken song about me being a slut or something (ahem... I've only ever been with one man and that is my current boyfriend).
Revenge: I had his number still from the first call he made so I prank called and weirded him out a couple of times. One day I tried the number again and it had been disconnected, lol.

Another one: Once someone called our home phone telling us in a very stressed Indian accent to turn our fax machine on. We told them we did not have a fax machine and that is was the wrong number about 3 times in one call before they said "ok" and hung up. They then called back and did this a few more times. Also answered the phone to fax machine static/talk.

Last one: A girl with a extremely annoying high pitch excited voice called me once, again in the middle of the night (do these freaks ever sleep?). They said "This is Sarah! Don't you remember me! Awe did I wake you up?" I say "Sarah who?" and they continue to repeat themselves not telling me their full name. I stay silent to let them keep going since they are paying for the phone call. Because I am silent they ask "Awe have you gone back to sleep?". I'm thinking, well I should be! Anyway, they got annoying so I hung up. I then contacted the only two Sarah's I know the next day (who by the way sound nothing like this annoying voice) and neither of them where the caller. Strange thing is, the caller knew my name.

For a while a year or two ago, I kept getting messages from my parole officer.

Problem was, I'm not on parole. I haven't even gotten a traffic ticket since I was eighteen (I'm 25).

Took a while to find out WHO it was, too, because she was on a first-name basis with 'me' and kept giving me her first name, but no business.

It really spooked me at first, because she was calling me by my first name, Jessica, and referring to legal weird crap that I couldn't figure out half the time. This went on for a couple of weeks, and at one point I actually recorded the message to playback and see what my friends thought.

Finally she left a number (hers was unlisted) and I called her back: "Um, hi, I keep getting these weird phone messages..."

Turns out someone, someone with my first name, no less, had given her parole officer the wrong number. I still can't figure out how she found someone with the same first name to jack a number from since my number is unlisted. The officer was convinced that it was a fluke, but it still bothers me sometimes. At any rate, she apologized, and removed my number from her records for that case.

Now if I could just get these "Your factory car's warranty is almost expired" calls to go away..

...

For the girls, I just scolded them... which didn't work since I got so annoyed I probably may have used some foul language but it only seemed to make them laugh more which irritated the hell out of me so I just ignored their calls after that.
The thing with kids or drunken dumbasses that call over and over is this: After you hang up the first or second time, be ready for the third...

"I've got the _____ police department on the on my other phone, and they're recording and tracing this call as we speak. Thought you'd like to know before they come knocking on your door." If they claim they can't be traced because they're on a cell phone, tell them that all modern cell phones have a gps position setting for emergency calls and that the police can tap into it from their end (a possible white lie as I'm not sure that other phones have it, but stick to your guns and they'll almost certainly buy it).

For added effect, pretend to speak with the officer that's on the other phone "Yes officer, this is the call," "good," "thank you," et cetera (but make sure the pranksters can hear you!). For even MORE effect, get someone with a commanding sort of voice (possibly a boyfriend, dad, uncle, or even a tough woman) to talk in the background, far enough from the prank receiver that it sounds like it's on another phone that's turned up, or just say they're on speakerphone. Or hell, get them on their cell and hold the phones near enough that they can be heard, and get them to say something to the effect of "a car's been dispatched to take care of it."

I can pretty much guarantee that any dumb kids, or anyone drunk/high enough to pull this stunt, will pretty much piss themselves as they scramble to hang up the phone.

Oh and fun fact: In sixth grade (I think it was a Sunday, or I was home sick), I got scolded on national television for prank-calling Feed The Children during one of their longer infomercials. The host actually took a moment from his "please send money" to tell the "pranksters" (me) to stop calling.

I like to think it was fairly epic as prank calls go.

On the home phone and my cellphone, I won't pick it up unless I know who is calling.
At my mom's house they used to make me pick it up no matter who was calling, but I don't live there anymore. Plus I hate talking on the phone.

All that I ever get away from my job are the car warranty ones. Ugh. I just stand there and think, "But I don't even HAVE a car!"

My boyfriend, however, kept getting these calls one night from a really angry guy trying to reach his girlfriend. He kept leaving messages that got lewder, and uh... Yeah. He figured it out eventually, though.

I usually don't pick up the phone when I don't recognize the number. Firstly, cause I really don't like talking on the phone. Secondly, I especially don't like talkin' to people I don't know.

But today the phone rings and the caller ID says 'cell phone'. I know a couple of people where their numbers only say 'cell phone'. I didn't really pay attention to the actual numbers. So I pick it up, thinking it may be one of them... and there's this man's voice. A deep, threatening male voice. He says, "Don't hang up the phone. What i'm going to say to you is very important."

And he didn't say it like 'I has candy' or 'you won the lottery' important. He said it like 'I have your grandmother in my basement. If you ever want to see her again...' important.

So i'm thinkin' 'What the f' is this?!'.

And then he says, "If you are more than twenty thousand dollars in debt..."

Goddamn, it's an f'in' telemarketing recording. And I hang up the phone all pissed off. Y'know, I can usually tell when it's a recording, but this I couldn't. Could they have gotten anyone more menacing to pitch their money saving business? Geez. ... At least I was happy my grama wasn't locked up in someone's basement.

I've never had to deal with weird phone calls (At least I lucked out on this), but a lot of people calls me and never say anything.

Most of the time it's telemarketers; their phones automatically calls people in their "to call" list (or whatever what they have), and then the telemarketer picks up the phone if someone answers. It's like being put on hold, minus the boring music. I usually wait for them to pick up just so I can tell them that I'm too broke to buy what they're selling. That usually shuts them up. :sarcasm:
