So for the past few days now I've noticed this strange looking black squirrel near my house. At first glance it honestly looks like a burn victim, or something like that. It's face is fine and still has fur on it, same with the tail and back end, including all four legs. The mid section is a bit peach in colour though and has no hair on it at all.

Anyone have ideas?

Maybe it really isn't a squirrel at all ;>>
Nah, I wouldn't think anything other than it may be some defect or just a different type of squirrel. I'm not too paranoid about things like that

Maybe it's sick? The fur could just be falling out or something..

A bit weird for someone to try that. Say for example it is true though.. why would they shave the top too? o.O

Possibly. I'd say rabies but it'd be a bit more spazzy than that and would probably die within a week or a few more days longer than that. It could've gotten into fights with other squirrels to explain the random patches of fur loss, or could've even been trying to reach a certain place and scraped his body against something that took the fur with it ><; I don't know but now I'm really thinking.

D'aww.
Give him a tiny tie, cane and top hat.
Then he'll be amazing...or...amazingly creepy >>

I think I agree with the other that say it's probably sick, I feel bad for it, but you probably want to steer clear of it for your own safety.

Yeah, there's no way I'm getting close to it.
If it is sick though, I wish I could help it.

It depends on which part of the world you live in. There are black squirrels native to some parts of the USA, for example. But if it looks burned, then I'm not sure what the reason could be. I hope its not diseased or has been tortured by a human being or something. Animal cruelty makes me very angry...

I think that its possible it had gotten caught in a fire pit from a campsite or something. Are there any campsites near where you live?

Hmm.. not that I know of. I live downtown in an apartment, however maybe on one of the side streets in someone's backyard.
I don't remember anyone having a bonfire recently though, not this week anyhow. It's been raining.
All last week it was sunny, so it could have happened then.

I'm going to keep my camera on me. If I see him I'll definitely make sure to snap a picture.

If you're commenting on it's color, then it's perfectly normal. There aren't very many black squirrels, but it's an uncommon gene to be born a black squirrel. Kind of like a black sheep.

As for the bare-belly, no clue.

Do you live in Canada by any chance? I live in BC and my uncle Peter noticed that a couple of black squirrels appeared in his yard out of no where. This was around two years ago.My uncle is someone that did alot of hunting and what not back in the day, still goes on trips sometimes with his son and his kids, but he had never seen these before.Theyre like mutants, bigger then normal ones and theyre ugly as hell! He caught on of them and set it free at my dads place one time when he wasnt home, now thers like three of them and all the normal ones are gone
o.o
They are evil creatures sent from hell.

Definitely not where I live! I barely see any "regular" squirrels anymore, all that pretty much exist in my town are the black, sort of ugly looking ones.

@ToxicGeist: Yes, I do live in Canada, Ontario to be exact. :)

It could have been burned by electrical wires. My grandma used to rehabilitate squirrels and other animals and she'd get one every now and then that was missing fur and was all burned up from wires. That or it could have mange or something like that.
