I've won the lottery!

100 dollars, all for me. I'm so giddy. I don't even usually buy scratch off tickets but I had an extra dollar and the mood hit me. So, what should I do with it? I'm torn between being responsible and putting it back, or going and getting a new outfit/pedicure/whatever. Also, what would you do if you won a big jackpot? I'd get completely out of debt and buy a house. Probably start up a geek shop in town. We're badly in need of one here.

If I won, I'd save it for the future. I'm afraid of being poor or at least not having enough money to fulfill my needs and a few wants, at least.
If it was a huge jackpot, though, like 1 mill+, I'd get more of what I need, some of what I want and save the rest. :)

Rylynne 04-29-2009 03:27 PM

Congratulations on winning then! :'D <3<3

Hmm... if I were to win a huge jackpot, I would buy a car, LOLZ. xDD;;
If the jackpot wasn't THAT big, I would probably save majority of what I won though, and perhaps use some of the money I won to go shopping. :'3
Or, I would probably buy a new gadget. xDD;; But that isn't as likely as clothes, shoe, and bag shopping though, since I'm very happy with my current gadgets as of right now. :>

... the Blackberry sounds nice though...
Too bad they aren't as popular over here in the Philippines as in the US. ^^;;

If I won a lot of money at this point in time I sadly wouldn't know what to do with it. Other than the time-honoured tradition of keeping it in a sock under the mattress. You can't trust the banks any more, say you win £100,000 and pay in into your bank account; who's to say the bank won't collapse and that money all be lost?

I'd probably invest in some Premium Bonds, which are a method of saving run by the Treasury department of the government so pretty much the safest place to put your capital. Premuim Bonds are actually a form of lottery, but instead of buying weekly tickets you keep the same bonds and they are entered into a monthly draw with a 1:30,000 chance of winning up to £1,000,000. I have £1,000 worth and have won twice; £50 and £100 respectively. I'd definitely invest in the full amount you can have (£30,000 worth) if I had the funds to do so. Because with the full amount you're pretty much guaranteed to win every month, and even if it's only the smallest prize of £25, that's £300 over the space of a year, which is a lot more than you'd get if you had the same amount in the bank and were collecting interest.
Plus winnings are tax-free, and the same bond can win for you over and over again if you're lucky.

If I had a really big win. I mean enough to be life-changing instead of just giving financial security, then I'd buy a house in San Francisco xD Not sure what I'd do after that of course! Carry on doing what I do now probably, but with no financial worries. I'd invest some cash in Mene, give Inso some capital to get some real development going. I'd probably invest in other safe and boring options. Because much as I'd like to start my own little business up I know I don't have the right aptitude and am too lazy to be able to hold something together myself.

Though I would love a second-hand bookstore of my own, where people could hangout and I'd try and poison them with my homemade muffins and cookies and so on xD

Rylynne 04-29-2009 04:18 PM

Hmm... since jelly mentioned setting up a second-hand bookstore now, I would totally love to set up a small cafe or restaurant for my parents to manage in the mountains. :3 A quaint little place you could relax in and take in the fresh mountain breeze and whatnot. :> Nothing like the mainstream cafes, but something small and peaceful, I think. :3 Coffee is definitely a family passion, and my dad just loves to cook in general, so it would be very nice indeed. ^^ <3<3

A little food outlet has enormous appeal to me too. The dream of it, you know? I'm aware the reality would be entirely different and have a lot of stress involved. But the dream of a cute/cool little place, just a few tables, yummy food, the gentle clatter of teaspoons and china, the quiet hum of conversation...

There's a pizza place just round the corner from me, it only has five tables, somewhere like that; small, friendly, unlikely to ever get busy enough for work to become something that will give you an ulcer, but with enough turn-over to guarantee you make a profit.

I'd hope that in this time of recession, small family-run businesses would florish, but sadly so many are going out of business because people can't afford the luxuries such as eating out, any more. But I'd far rather patronise a place that cared about every customer and got to know them all, rather than just being interested in making as much profit as possible.

So many have dreams or having their own businesses though, and so many fail because people just don't realise how relentless it is, you need so much drive to become a success in the first place, then to remain a success, it's just too much for many.

OR...

You might have a nicely successful business, until you get put out of business by some monster big-name chain opening up near you and viciously under-cutting you...

I need to add an amendment to my bookstore dream...the building would need to be of a decent height and have a flat roof (not an issue in San Francisco as most have) and I'd plant up the roof space with flowers and keep bees up there xD
Shops that sell two entirely different and unlikely things appeal to me greatly, so a bookstore that also sold honey would please me very much ^^

Congrats. A whole $100. It's not that much.. but it does help, sometimes.

I'm not sure what I would do with the money if I won the lottery. Maybe buy a nice house and live in it while waiting for my bf to come home from the navy. XD

I sure as hell wouldn't put a lot of it into the bank, that's for sure. I may not be able to resist from spending lots of money very often (when I have it), but I'm pretty sure I could make do.

I'm not one for businesses, but I could probably start up some place, as well. Not around here though.. this place. Blek.

jellysundae 04-29-2009 05:03 PM

You'd use the Bank of Sock too would you, Yume`?

Alexandrus Gambino 04-29-2009 05:28 PM

Get a makeover <3

Let me. Make you over. Over and over. Tonight. *Sings*

It's not a lot when you're paying bills and what not, but when it just falls into your lap it feels huge.

AcidDrop 04-29-2009 07:37 PM

i won £1 of the lottery once xD

EpoxyObsession 04-29-2009 09:47 PM

Oh, man, winning a big lottery jackpot would be sweet.

I'd buy a car and start planning a bunch of cool trips with friends and family (on my dime, of course). I'm thinking a long Eurotrip, definitely including Paris, Southern France, London, Amsterdam and a Caribbean cruise for sure. Other possible destinations would include South America (Brazil? Argentina?), Dubai (in the United Arab Emirates), somewhere in Africa (South Africa? Egypt?), and somewhere in Asia (Bangladesh? India? Thailand?). I feel like China, Japan, and Russia are also worth visiting, although they don't make my immediate short list.

I'd definitely go clothes shopping - I haven't been shopping in forever, and I'd love to go out and buy anything I wanted. I'd also go shopping for housewarming presents for myself and my roommate, and I'd definitely go to more concerts and go on more road trips.

I would probably give some money to my parents to help them with their debt, and I'd take my brother on a shopping spree.

I wouldn't buy a new place because I love my apartment, although I might get a lake house nearby so that I can throw crazy weekend parties.

Well, if you're in the US, the FCC says that. The US government has guaranteed money deposited in banks since the Great Depression.

If you win the lottery, you should definitely put it in a bank because you can get really high percentages of interest if you've got a couple mil in your account, and you can make a lot of money that way. Bonds are good, too, as are other investments.

Kah Hilzin-Ec 04-29-2009 10:20 PM

If I won the jackpot...

... I would hide in my house [so that people don't rob my house, stupid ecuadorian president making stealing things legal >__<] until the day of my flight to Lindenberg to join a course to learn german o__o

Or if I were an adult, I would go to Dubai =D I heard it's a reeeeally expensive nice place.

Or if it's not that big, I would just keep it in Sock & Mattress Bank until I found a nice way to spend it, like a shirt. I haven't had a shirt since Christmas two years ago :/

KamenRiderNadeshiko 04-29-2009 10:42 PM

Congrats! Whats it like to win that much money?

As for what to do with it, spend half of it, put the other half away.

Codeine 04-29-2009 11:08 PM

Good gosh you are lucky...I only won a dollar before. XD

Kazuke 04-29-2009 11:14 PM

Hmmmmm if I won the lottery I'd pay back my parents, my brother, and my friend Joey (even though he says I don't owe him for the fries lol). If I had anything left I'd probably get some cd's lol. Or a better cell plan XD

Codeine 04-29-2009 11:32 PM

I would go to college if I won big! 0-0... Finish off my Batchulars degree... get a nice house... car... and yah.. It would just be awesome!

Holey 04-29-2009 11:37 PM

I won fifty dollars once on one of those bingo scratch off tickets. Originally though, I threw the ticket away thinking I had not won. My bf at the time said, "Wait a sec" and looked at it again. Sure enough, four corners! We went wild and crazy...and bought groceries.

jellysundae 04-30-2009 12:34 AM

I did win £16 on a scratchcard once. I bought a nice thick fleecy hooded jacket that was in a sale with that. Got a lot of use out of it too, so that was a much appreciated little win ^^

Thoth Star 04-30-2009 01:23 AM

Wow, thats amazing Nissa! I never buy those scratchers... or anything with gambling.
I think you should go shopping and buy something sexy. lol/

I was shocked and had to do a double take. It felt pretty nice. I've gone ahead and banked it though. I'm a mom, gotta be responsible.

Guivre 04-30-2009 11:42 PM

Well, that's a good choice. I'm sure you'll be glad when you have it later.

Big jackpot though ... Probably would get a seaside/waterfront cottage with a perfect garden, a couple of dogs and a cat sunning in the window. Nothing is perfect without pets. D= Or an easel. A very mellow choice, but these days it takes a lot to be mellow.

Miko Bukake Bath 05-02-2009 03:02 AM

I win 30-40 dollars pretty often. I would spend it on something you like... if you put it back into lottery you might lose alot of money. If I won the jackpot I would probably by a bunch of random crap. For instance:
-an ice cream truck
-an Island
-all kinds of video games
-an orangutan
-a midget wrestling team
-and a bunch of shiny s***
-I would alo become a professional rapper

Nissa 05-02-2009 03:05 AM

An island would be nice, as would the shiny crap. If you won enough you could buy an island and have it covered in shiny things. :P

jellysundae 05-02-2009 05:21 PM

I wouldn't mind an ice cream truck xD A vintage one of course, that would be cool (ew, excuse the pun)

I'm not sure I'd want an island. I'm too realistic for that...
Is it in a temperate zone?
Does it have a secure and reliable source of power and fresh water?
Is it easily accessible?

I don't want to be spending more of my millions than I need on a hurricane shelter, de-salination plant, hydro-electric system or blasting an airport or harbour out of bedrock...
