I had all four of my wisdom teeth out. I was given medicine for it, but the stuff didn't work. My body has built up an immunity to most pain killers. Still it didn't hurt as much as I thought it would. The worst part was (as I believe as Doomfishy mentioned) the gauze. It was rather gross, and I drooled more then I was comfortable with. Chewing solid food was also a challenge, but it is a prime opportunity to live off of milk shakes for a few days.
Having wisdom teeth removed does have the added bonus of letting the rest of your teeth sit more comfortably as well. I dodged the braces bullet because after my wisdom teeth were gone the rest straightened out. Much more dignified I think. The point is there is very little to worry about, and a few days of being sore is still better then years of being sore and having uncomfortable teeth. |
Mine come out this summer; they haven't grown in yet, and I'm nearly 20. I've got an extra one, so they'll have five total to cut out surgically. :/
|
I got them out last year.
I didn't have much problem. The pain only lasted for two days, really, and I had vicodin to take care of it. |
I got mine out oh... many years ago it seems now. Probably close to 10 years? I can't remember how old I was, I just know I got my braces off when I was a junior in highschool and I had them out before I got braces and before they even started coming in. But back to the topic at hand:
If you've reacted well to pain meds in the past (as in: taking an aspirin or tylenol actually relieves whatever pain you took it for, I'm unlucky like that) you should be pretty fine. Yeah, the gauze in your mouth sucks, but they should put you under for the actual surgery so that's not a big deal (try being awake while they put on your braces or tighten them). Let's see... I barely remember the first day, but I was very out of it (awake but not thinking) so I just lay in bed with some sort of movie on or something. You might want to make sure who ever's taking care of you (do NOT try to take care of yourself if you have a choice) has a towel handy, you will be drooling. A lot. And right after the surgery it will be bloody drool, but don't worry that's normal. And now for a pointless side story/cautionary tale: I was fed veggie soup while I was healing (if you haven't figured it out you're left with gaping holes where the teeth used to be for a little while) and some fo the veggies got stuck in the holes. Thanks to the meds fuzzing up my head I didn't realize it until the stuck food caused an infection in one of the holes which was very painful and a big hassle that required several trips back to the orthodontist. So make sure that you don't actually eat any food: just liquids, don't suck anything through a straw, and if it's a thick liquid rinse out your mouth afterwards. But all in all: don't worry about it too much. You get to do nothing for about a week and milk it for all it's worth even if you're not feeling half so bad as you let on. |
When I got mine out they put me out completely. one moment I was counting backwards from 100 and the next I was waking up and feeling kind of disoriented. It takes a while to recover from the stuff they use to knock you out. After that the pain meds they had me on kept me so out of it I slept for most of the next two days only getting up to eat, but painwise there was nothing.

I'm fairly lucky.
My wisdom teeth came in a few years ago but they haven't caused me any problems. No need to remove them if I have the space for them in my mouth. And thank goodness for that. I have such a near-debilitating fear of dental appointments. Doctors poking inside my mouth makes me want to either cry or faint. x.x |
All these tales of wisdom teeth getting pulled makes me think I'll be looking forward to oblivion, since mine will have to be surgically removed (they haven't grown in).
|
Mine weren't too bad when I got mine out. It was actually more painful to keep them in. The recovery period varies from person to person, but be sure to stock up on jello and soups without noodles. I was able to eat solid food about three days after the surgery.:P
|
I got mine pulled a year ago. I got good meds thou. The worst part was the bruising on my face >_<; but I bruise easy so....good luck!
everyone takes it differently and hopefully they give you good meds. good luck! |
I got them out, the recovery wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. But it was still pretty painful.
|
I'm glad it wasn't that bad. How are you feeling? You're in bed on the computer, right? Just remember to take it easy.
|
So far I count myself lucky. I think I've got 3 of my wisdom teeth in and so far, no pain or annoyances. Which is good, because I know I can't afford to get them taken out. I'm also not overly fond of dentists, specially now that I'm an adult and don't get free candy anymore for behaving throughout the proceedure. >.>

My wisdom tooth is just starting to come in, I am dreading the future outcome of it.

I've gotten my wisdom teeth taken out. How much it hurts depends on how deep they are and how many they have to take out. They will numb you up pretty well and the numbness will last for a while afterward (I remember dribbling grape juice down my chin and not even feeling it because my lips and chin were completely numb). I think the worst part is the cotton padding you have to have in your mouth for the bleeding. The taste of the padding and the blood made me gag. I don't remember if I actually threw up, but it's very possible.
Don't worry too much. It's probably better to get them taken out sooner than later. I'd suggest getting some smoothie mix for after the surgery. They are yummy, easy to eat, and cool, which is nice, since your face will probably get warm and swollen. Edit: whoops, you already got them taken out. Well, if anyone else is getting them taken out... |
I haven't had them taken out yet, but I have to get them out soon. They're growing in and one of them is growing in sideways, but it hasn't been hurting so to me it's weird. But I'm going to get a consultation soon and then go from there.

Well, most people don't have too much of a problem with it. I unfortunately had a horrible experience. When I came out of the anesthesia, the first thing I saw was the bottom of a trashcan. My stomach had a very adverse reaction to whatever they used to knock me out, and I was sick all day. Oh, the pain medication they give you really helps; but make sure not to overdo it, especially if you're smaller. I took one pill and was still in pain, so I took another -- afterwards, I felt so dizzy and it just added to the sick feeling, I think I just slept after that.
My boyfriend just got his out and had a completely opposite experience. Whereas I was dragging my body out of the office, he was basically high off the anesthesia and was feeling fantastic. When he called me on the phone he was all like, "I FEEL AWESOME!" and was apparently very funny to watch for the next hour. As far as I know it didn't take him too long to heal and he didn't have very much pain afterwards. So, there's two way different wisdom teeth extraction cases, haha. |

I'm due to get my four wisdom teeth taken out probably in the fall sometime, and I'm dreading it like you wouldn't believe, but I know it has to be done. |
I got my wisdom teeth already, atleast the bottom ones. I however don't have more space at the top part of my mouth so i guess no worrying about it. Because I honestly going to the dentist ._.
|
I haven't had to have mine out. I did have a chipped tooth once that got infected and had to be sedated to get it out.
not fun. |
I think mine are in, or at least they've still got a little ways to go. They aren't bothering me though, so I feel lucky. My dad never got his removed. Hope I end up like that. Haha. I really don't ever want a tooth pulled. I had a little dental surgery where they cut open the roof of my mouth and glued brackets with little golden chains to two impacted teeth I have. I remember that first cut, and sheesh, it hurt...the other one felt nothing more than a little tug with blood running down the back of my throat. The rest of the time I didn't feel anything. Didn't look at the tools they put in my mouth either. Just kinda shut my eyes, thought about other things. Opened my eyes only when they stopped once in a while, see what was up. When they were finished, I felt a little...weak, I guess? But I could walk out of there, so it wasn't really that bad. Waiting for it to stop bleeding and the numb feeling to go away isn't that bad, but if you'd rather be doing something else, it can get to be a bit of an annoyance to deal with. Let's see...my sister had some of her teeth removed...a loong time ago...I think she was 14 or something like that. She remembers one of them hurt, and some she didn't really feel. Me, I'd be afraid of getting just that ONE that hurts. >.<
|
I believe I have gotten mine. I am not completely sure to be honest o.o
If I did get mine, I don't think it was painful, because I don't remember any pain. I am 22, so I just don't know lol |
misty you could be like me. I just never grew em
during basic training the navy takes em out by the division. but they got to me and asked why my file didn't say I already had them out. i aked my dad and he said the same thing happend to him. they just never grew. if you had your wisdom teeth pulled you would remember. from see it done it's a pain for a few days after, but you get doped up pretty good so you wouldn't quite feel it. some people have mouths that actually fit wisdom teeth right. but wisdom teeth usually develop problems instead of fitting nicely |
I just got my wisdom tooth out, the bottom left one - since it was growing in sideways. It's numb still, such an odd feeling.
|
My Wisdom Teeth are coming in now, I believe I have the space. But the sore gums are torture, as is the jaw ache. I wish I had dental provided, I have not been for a number of years. I hate my teeth >.< |
I got all four of my wisdom teeth out at 15, I think. They started coming in early at like 13 or so. The surgery was worth it! My teeth were really hurting when they were coming in. Although the orthodontists who operated on my, gave me so much knock-out gas, that I was loopy and sleepy the rest of the day. But I had pain meds afterwads and my teeth have been fine in the 2+ years since I've had it done.
