I just lost my bearded dragon earlier today. He was my baby and he went everywhere with me. I loved him like a child. He ended up dying in my hands. The thing that really bothered me about him dying is the fact that his death could have been prevented. It was my fault and I feel beyond guilty about it. I'm having a really hard time forgiving myself for it.

Has anyone else had a situation where they felt that their pet's passing was their fault? How did you come to terms with it?

i am so sorry.
i had a chinchilla that i got for christmas. i love chinchillas to death. i felt so bad because rodents do do good in heat.. my room was the only safe area for him was in my room. because the cats and dogs loved to mess with him.. well during the summer my room was really hot, we didnt have any fans and the house vent didnt work in my room. i came home from school and he wasnt getting up but he was still breathing. i was crying while i held him and fed him electro-lights for 8 hours.. i was crying for a week after. i didnt get any sleep tell my dad told me to go take a shower.. he actually put me in there. when i got out he had already burried him. .. i know how you feel especially when it comes to the fact that you feel it iwas your fault.

I'm very sorry for you loss, love.
I had a dog that was my life. He lived for about 6 years but he died when I was 5. He was at lease one when I was born. So, I grew up with that dog. I was running around and seen my grandpa, (and we all know how it feels to be young and see a grandparent that spoils you every time they come over). Then I opened the door and my dog runs out and gets hit by a car after hours of chasing him. I still haven't forgave myself because its every bit my fault.

I had two pet rats one time and one time I left them out of the cage in the room so they could run around and get their exercise and I accidently left the door open and they got out into the house. They were safe there a little bit because there was still the risk of them getting squished and then someone opened the front door and they ran out into the road and got run over by my foster parents van pulling into the driveway. I blame myself for it even though I wasn't the one who opened the main door and let them out.

This one isn't really my fault but I still feel really bad about it. My Great Pyrenees was nine years old and was having difficulties getting up and moving around. He seemed to be doing better, so our family went on the vacation we had been planning. Needless to say he died while we were gone. I feel so guilty for not being there for him in the end.

A pet's passing is sad indeed. If by your fault, simply learn what went wrong, and if it can be prevented, make moves to insure it doesn't again. The most human's can hope for is when their pet dies, there is as little pain as possible. My sympathy to those of you who still feel guilty for your pet's passing. The threads of fate are often cruel.

It's never good when a pet dies, for that I am sorry for your loss.

I've only ever had it happen one time, and that was with a bunny I had while I was stationed in Alaska. Basically I thought it was my fault---however as it turns out it was what they call a "bunny mill" bunny and it would not have lived the 10+ years that bunnies live. Basically it boils down to did you do what you could? If you did then there is no reason to blame yourself (I know it's easier said than done). If you didn't well then there is reason for blame.

Coping with it is one of those things that is hard to do, you can never really replace a pet especially if you've had one for a long long time. But as they say time heals all wounds, it will get better, you just have to take it one day at a time.

I had a bird Cockatail and I was playing with it (I usually took her out of her cage to play) and Then my dog wanted to play with her too, which I didn't mind because she usually did that. My bird got frisky with my dog, snapped at her and my dog smacked her with her paw and broke my birds neck. My bird didn't die instantly, she puffed up and I picked her up not knowing what to do and she died in my hands. I was heart broken.

I'm sorry to hear of your loss.
When i had my first millipede about four years ago, i was quite ill, and i feel that i neglected her. I'm still not sure if she died from old age, or my shoddy care, but i never really got over the guilt of that. One of the reasons i dote on my little ones now.

Me too. My puppies died because they licked some cleaning agents ... Probably because they kept on licking the floor.

I kept on putting their food on the floor so that they'll be able to eat them easier, and I guess they licked some agents along with the food. T_____T

I accidentally kill my pets all the time. o.o It's actually really bad. So begins the tale of my many many pets.

The first pet I ever had was named Princess. Princess was a bunny, we had her for 2 days. My dad said she got homesick and had to back to the forest. I never figured out what happened to her.

My second pet was Princess 2, she was also a rabbit. My sister says she went outside a week after we got her and found that she was bloody and dead. She said a raccoon killed her.

My third, and probably next 20 pets, were all goldfish. I won them at a carnival. The person there gave me 20 tiny goldfish in one small little tank. I think I overfeed them, either that or they died of having too small of a tank with too many fish. They were all dead within a week.

My next two pets would be two turtles. I had two turtles as a birthday gift from one of my friends. First day I got them, I got one and let it walk around on my hand. It fell off my hand, a long drop all the way to the floor since I was standing up. After that, that turtle always had a particularly soft shell. So after a month we decided to get them some fish friends in their tanks. Apparently turtles and fishes don't mix too well. I was lifting up this one heavy rock bridge in the tank to stop the fight between the fishes and the braver turtle, when I was putting the rock bridge down, I accidentally put it on the soft shelled turtle. He died. Then the other turtle got mad or something and decided to bite all the fish to death. Then I think he died also.

Next two pets are the rabbits. One was brown and white, the other pure white. Cocoa and Ruby. They fought too much so we separated them. Then my dad said we were getting a dog, but we had to say goodbye to Cocoa and Ruby. Bye bye bunnies.

Moving on to the dog. Our dog was quite lovely, but our neighbors disliked him because he barked too much. Turns out the neighbors are a bunch of crazies and called the police because of his barking one time while we were all at school. The police came to our house to answer to my crazy non-English speaking grandmother. The doggie went back to the adoption agency.

Next we got another dog, this time a smaller one, that was an inside dog. We had this one for a few weeks, then bye bye back to my cousin's house because my dad didn't like her.

After that I got a dwarf hamster. She was very active. Turns out she pushed some part of her cage off and escaped, into the wall. I think she's dead in our walls somewhere.

After that 2 guinea pigs, both male. One with long hair, the other short hair. The pooped a lot, the short haired one was crazy and wouldn't let me pick him up. My dad didn't like them, again, goodbye guinea pigs to some person my dad knows.

After that we got another dog. This dog was perfect this time. He's still with us.

Oh, yes, and I also had another fish. This fish was from 5th grade and he died recently. He lived to a grand old age of 5 years. Throughout his life span he's been brutally attacked by another fish, who ripped out his scales and half of his dorsal fin. My dad separated the fishies, the attacked jumped out of his bowl and I nearly stepped on him. Yupp, that's all my pet stories.

I'm so sorry.. I know how it is to loose an animal in your arms. I lost my poodle last year, fairly randomly. He was really old and ancient and shouldn't have been a surprise to me but it still came as a shock waking up and finding him beyond repair. It took me a long time to really get over it but those things take time. I talked it out with my friends and tried to take my mind off of it. I had recently gotten a puppy. Well he was still considered a puppy and he took my mind off of my poodle. Just try to talk it out and know it wasn't your fault but it's always hard..

I'm sorry to hear that. I know how you feel and how it is to lose a pet. I've lost many in my life (many rodents with two year life spans) but only one that I feel was my fault and she wasn't even mine..

I was taking care of my friends Gecko's while she was away, a male and a female. I was feeding them properly and all that, but she was growing skinnier and lost her tail. I wasn't sure what to do, my friend had come to see here and wasn't sure what was wrong either. A couple weeks later she was dead... She wasn't mine to mess up on.. and yet I did anyhow.. :(

My fiancee had his hamster on a race car and was racing him around..... He didn't realize that the hamster had fallen off before it was too late and he felt a soft, squishy, crunch beneath his knee....

My sister and I accidentally killed our two pet bunnies when we were little. At our old house we would always make them "bunny salads" by getting lots of different leaves and grass from around the yard and mixing it up in a food bowl for them. I guess when we got to our new house some of the plants in our new back yard were poisonous because the next time we made them a bunny salad, they died.

This is very difficult to share...

My yellow female betta from Thailand was sharing a tank with two kuhli loaches that I've been trying to give away for a couple of months.
One day I found her stuck in the kuhli loach house.
I was franically trying to get help from the betta forum ( nobody there) for about the next hour while going back and forth bringing her up for air.
I finally got her out and an hour later she died of her wounds.

Now...keep in mind she was my favorite and was imported from Thailand. I still have her male counterpart. I wanted to breed them in the fall and now she's dead.

My dad used to have a hamster but he was sleeping one day and rolled over onto it. I was really upset (This was when he was a kid) but told his parents it ran away.
