Okay, I'm angry. I have calmed down some but I was so angry that I was in tears earlier. So here's what happened. I go to Wal-mart every week for groceries, and I've never had a problem. They never ask for the receipt when I leave unless there is something on the bottom of the cart, regardless of if a couple of large items are in a bag or not. Well, I went to leave after grabbing some McDonalds at the location inside of Wal-mart and didn't even think about it when I threw the reciept away.
I went to leave and the guy stops me and he would not let me leave. They treated me as though I was trying to steal something even though my buggy was FULL of bags FROM wal-mart. I, for one, will never be returning there. They don't deserve business if they are going to treat there customers like they were thieves. They didn't even apologize to me for what they did.
So Discuss GD;
Being treated like you're a theif,
What makes you stop shopping or going to an establishment.

Honestly, in my opinion, that's not that bad. You can't imagine how many people have gotten away with stealing by doing that. They were hired to make sure, not make guesses.
Until they took away the guard at our local one, we got stopped every time we tried to leave. As did everyone else.

I'm sorry... That sort of thing is very distressing. Unfortunately, even little stores have huge problems with shoplifting, so bigger stores like Walmart must loose thousands of dollars a day, so they have to be more vigilant. I used to have a coat that was a total shoplifter coat. It had huge pockets that I could fit hardcover books in. So I used to get followed around by store security a lot. You learn to modify your actions to look as above-board as possible.
However, I always think there's a level of going too far. If someone has a cart full of groceries that are already bagged, obviously you paid for them. And they can't prove that you WERE stealing. Maybe you could have challenged them to look at the surveillance footage?

That's a pretty common thing at Wal-Mart, isn't it? They have a lot of shoplifters which I assume is partially because of the neighborhoods Wal-Marts exist in, so they have to have extra security to make sure no one is trying anything funny.
I used to have a coat that would be a shoplifter coat if it had more pockets. I stopped wearing it because I didn't feel comfortable going into stores and people watching to make sure I didn't steal anything. Luckily I hardly have to go into those types of stores since the neighborhood I live in isn't too bad, but that doesn't mean it never happens in other places.

That sucks. o.o I'm sorry. Did they end up letting you leave eventually, or what happened?
Poor customer service and unfair treatment will generally make me not return to the offending establishment, lol.

- used to wear black jeans/t-shirts etc. -
it's really unfair. D:

I don't shop wal mart so I don't know if that is standard - but I know the home depot near me won't let you leave without checking your receipt.
Costco also requires you to show your receipt before you leave - if they are consistent about checking receipts then I don't really see a problem.

I usually don't have any problems at Wal-Mart, but I know in some stores they follow me from the moment I walk in the door. I guess maybe I look like the criminal type. It used to bother me a lot, but now I get off on when the finally find out they wasted their time watching me and probably missed a real criminal.

That's awful!
How long did they make you stay?
I would be extremely ticked off by that.
They'd never see me again.

That seems annoying, but fair. The only thing that stops me going to an establishment is being unfair. There was a panic about gas for ONE DAY in my town and some unscrupulous businessmen took advantage of it by price gouging. It is years later, and whenever possible I REFUSE to give them my business. As a consumer, it is one of the best ways to make a point about behavior.

This is a tricky issue stores need to protect themselves and customers don't deserve to be rudely hassled for no good reason. That said, I see no reason for a simple apoligy if you were wrongly targeted as a theif.

I don't have too much of issue like that when I go to Wal- Mart but when I go to the mall I do.
EVERY store I go into, they stop me before I leave.
A couple of times, I was carrying large shopping bags and every time I went in a store, they offered to put of my bags behind the counter so I "wouldn't get tired carrying them around the store".
Now it's not the face they took my bags, it's the fact they lied to me about it.
If they would have said, "excuse me miss. We've had so trouble with shop lifters lately so we would like to put your bag behind the counters so they isn't any confusion you've taken stolen something", I would have been completely fine with it.

You may not have had an issue if they would have worded it that way to you, but I would. I would have felt like a suspect before I even got in the door good, and I should feel like a paying customer, not a suspect.

I'd rather have everyone treated like a suspect then have people actually shoplift.
Some guy actually walked out with a flat screen TV at my walmart, because he had some bags in his cart. D:
