@dewey I had assumed that it was only the first bit that was free...kind of like WoW where the first 20 levels are free, but then there is a monthly subscription...Is that not correct?

ummm, im not entirely sure, but the way it looked on the website made it sound like it was 100% free. but if that's not the case, then I'm going to play Aion. at least there i'll have wings and can fly with them lol

I've had one character die who was a level five monk and my other friend who was a player character was a level eight rogue and level one swashbuckler. It was really messed up what happened. We had a level ten assassin in our party. So I will tell you how it happened.

Katsuri, a level five monk who wished to restore his monestary back to its former glory, and Giott ~ Level eight rogue and level on swashbuckler who was hunting a family line of vampires, and Mistina(NPC) an assassin who was traveling with Giott part of a vampire slaying guild. So we were randomly adventuring and first we encounter a copperhead snake(whoppeee) one hit it was dead. Then we encountered five owlbears! We tried to run, but only two of the three survived. Mistina perished trying to save Katsuri. The Dungeon master was pissed at us and decided to make the game extremely difficult, so basically we were playing always lucky just to have half of our hit points. Katsuri stayed barely above zero. Giott and Katsuri get seperated after they were hiding in a tree and a ninja vampire attacks. Giott luckily had a cape that allowed him to turn into a bat, but Katsuri had to rely on his quick movement to run, then the DM said Katsuri was tired. After being able to successfully hide from the vampire, Katsuri got a few hours of rest just before being attacked by a mid sized spider and Katsuri only had one hit point left, but manages to defeat it. (Got to love those lucky twenty criticals) Then a bear found Katsuri and he tried to run and luckily got away only to get found by the vampire before he could get the sanctuary of the town and Katsuri was no match for this ninja vampire thus the death of Katsuri. Giott on the otherhand found the vampire ships with the help of the group he was able to kill one of the leaders, but in the end he was overwhelmed and died too. All due to the Dungeon master not wanted to DM in the end... ~ LAME O!

hahaha omg, if that was MY dm, i would've put him in so many joint locks he would've cried lol. that's terrible

ronneh 11-12-2009 07:14 PM

i always liked cleric level, though my favorite is bard, just for the added spell of bonefiddle. D:
i love that spell. even if it is a kind of pussy-class, haha.

the best group size, for a new dm, is about 4 or 5 people. but those people have to actually want to play. and it would be best to set things up before you started playing, like character sheets, feats and spells together, also rules that the dm is setting up for that particular game, also how often you will be playing. like once a month, once every few weeks, once a week?

people who really want to play will usually want to play every week or every two weeks or so.

is the op a dm? or is this just curiosity?

Nalah Sin 11-12-2009 07:22 PM

Don't call my beloved bards a pussy-class, or I'll have to stone you with cotton balls! :P

deweyduquesne 11-12-2009 07:28 PM

hahahaha rofl. everyone knows clerics are where it's at. i mean comeon, we're the gods gifts to the world lol

It was very terrible, especially since Mistina was a level ten assassin!! He was purposely trying to kill us off, it really sucked. On top of that earlier the trio was in a town and Katsuri purchased two hunting dogs one was Louie and the other Laurie, and they helped out in a swamp battle against some nasty lizard men. The next morning after camp they got sick and died for some unknown reason. So he killed off my bloody dogs!! They were treated as (Celestial riding dogs with 2d8 hit points).

It all really stems from the guy who played the character Giott was dming for my other character in the same world. Half-Elf Bard Ludaden Rainwood level seven at the time was traveling with another half-elf ranger level six named Vayden whom the dm who killed off the other characters from the other campaign decided to kill Vayden and then Ludaden. He had a character with the elder god fire ability and was a war mage. His character's name was Merrick. We were in his father's shadows of the forest encampment who was against a rule of tyranny. Ludaden barely escaped with his life, by making himself invisible and doing a successful move silently roll. Ludaden instead of running off to some unknown location hid in Merrick's father's tent until Merrick was expelled for murder by his own father. The guy who played Vayden was pissed off. All of this happened because the player of Merrick is a huge baby!

Actually if you really want to add insult to injury, after that incident he swore to hunt my half-elf bard down and kill him because he just wanted to. Luckily, I was more wise than he gave me credit for. His character and mine, along with Vayden were supposed to go to an elven ruins to seek out a relic called "The Cudgel of Fornastraous to heal a blight of the land that was bringing about blighted zombies that caused a horrific poison and killed the victim within forty-eight hours. So Ludaden with Merrick's father (NPC level seven ranger) and a scout of his camp, (Level 2 rogue) went into the tomb and was able to meet another PC in there who was a level eight cleric which made the dungeon incredibly much easier. We got the cudgel, cured the blight with the help of a powerful npc (Roven ~ level 10 druid) and a PC (Level seven druid gnome female(She lost her familiar dog in the battle of the multitude of zombies and poisonous snakes.) Luckily Ludaden found a relic of summoning and summoned five celestial lions and the battle was won!! After everyone disbanded Ludaden was on the run for several sessions by himself.

To make a long story short because a lot happened in between then. Merrick ended up quitting when he found out Ludaden had helped cure the blight of the land and he just did some foolish thing and ended up getting killed by some demon. (That's another story) Then he accused that dm of playing favorites and the remaining group members that were playing it caused major drama. He blessed and bitched out my DM for three hours straight!!!

@ronneh ~ Bard is not a weak class, you just have to play smart and use your brain, trust me I know!

@Nalah Sin ~ I love my bards too!

hahaha mad nice!!! yea, i hate when my DM get's sand where it doesnt belong...if u catch my drift lol. but usually once i point that fact out to him he's alot easier to deal with lol

Club Owner Dice 11-13-2009 01:02 AM

I <3 bards! ^.^ I only got to play one in this really short module. My halfling tottally played crazy tunes on a mandolin. My character invented death metal by attempting to play the flight of the bumbleebee's for inspired courage^.^ And then ended her solo performance by smashing her string instrument on the big bad wolf boss that was attacking her. Luckily the rest of the party had been windling away at the beasts health points, so it collapesed to the devistating blow of the make shift club. What a finalle! Barbs ARE awesome.

Vampyre_Oreo 11-13-2009 01:23 AM

Hello,I'm a D&D player it's good to see a topic about it.It's one of the best games around I prefer the pen and paper version over the video game due to the fact that you roll your own dice not a computer randomly generating a number.I would be interested in playing D&D online.Well if you want feel free to message me and we can talk more.

souldragon28 11-13-2009 02:10 AM

I've heard alot about D&D n i wouldn't mind playing it myself since i'm big on RPGs.

Luckily, that particular DM had decided he didn't want to DM anymore and my other friend was DMing for us. He spent many sessions trying to find where my character was, because he wanted to kill my character off since he didn't get too when he was dming for me. My character had a haste spell which was very helpful in avoiding encounters my character was long gone by the time he had picked up any trail whatsoever. My character disappeared on a ship and sailed across the see to an isle about two hundred miles off the coast where my character has made new allies and found a new home for now. When he found out my character had disappeared pretty much and the trail went cold, he was so mad he quit. This whole issue literally ruined a six year friendship, pretty petty huh?

@Club Owner Dice ~ At level eight do bards actually start really getting powerful to where they can hold their own.(Depending on stat rolls). Mine is still alive and is now level eight bard/ level two virtuoso-a bard prestige class. I would hate to ruin my instrument, but I guess you have to defend yourself. You must have twentied that wolf!

@Vampyre_Oreo ~ Well we are talking quite in depth about it so hit us up on here.

@souldragon28 ~ You should definitely try playing it with a group.

deweyduquesne 11-13-2009 04:40 PM

lol omg, sounds like the DM from the Abyss to me lol. I can't believe he let that ruin ur friendship tho, thats really messed up lol. But I think once I get back into playing again, I'm going to try and make sure the campaign setting is Faerun. lol call me a dork, but I love when I can play a game and actually have an idea of what the place looks like before I start

Nothing wrong with playing a campaign in Faerun. I have read a shit load of books from the Forgotten Realms myself. I have read at least ten of the Dark Elf series with Drizzt in them. I have read the first eight or nine, of the Harpers series, The Finder's Stone Trilogy ~ that which I enjoyed imensely since the trilogy focused on bardic magic and characters. Then I ready the Avatar trilogy which was key to the series. I haven't read any of the other books which are part, I always wanted to read the Elminster making of a Mage book. I will one day but I still have new books in the Dark Elf series I need to catch up on.

Yea it was pretty messed up, we are talking about playing but my friend who dms for me now and that other messed up DM and another player who sided with him-- we will never be friends like we used to again, now that they have showed their true colors. I also was told when my friend played a character with the other DM the guy who played the cleric character in my last campaign dmed and sucked. He sent two young adult red dragons after them, at level two and five. Absurd!!! It takes time to be a good DM though I know.

hehe yea i hear ya. actually, i'm pretty proud to say that i've just about read all of the books that contain Drizzt. with the exception being the new book RA Salvatore wrote with his son Geno(assuming that the only books with Drizzt in them are the ones RA himself wrote). but the finder's stone? i think i might have to check that one out one day lol

ronneh 11-13-2009 06:26 PM

naah, my favorite story as a bard was when we were being attacked by goblin archers from the front of a cave and i was the only one in the group who didn't have a long-range weapon. so of course, i started playing inspire courage. after about 5 rounds, i got bored and stopped playing, choosing to pick up rocks to throw instead.
i killed a two goblins with rocks just because i rolled awesome numbers for hit and attack.
never underestimate the power of throwing rocks, haha.

Drizzt has a son now? Wow I need to catch up, the last book I read was The Spine of the World. I have a lot of catching up to do. Yes, check out the Finder's Stone Trilogy, a very good one. About a bard who lives a unnaturally long life whose name is Finder Wyverspur who basically created the Finder Stone which is an artifact that is activiated by singing certain sequenced pitches. The other main character is Alias, a auburn haired sell swordswoman for hire. You will learn more as you read, it's very fascinating.

@ronneh ~ It's a lot about luck and strategy, goblins aren't very difficult but in numbers can be quite the bother for sure.

Nalah Sin 11-13-2009 06:43 PM

Nah, it's all about bard's luck! It happened to one of my bards, too - he was a poet, and while he was versifying one of his heroic epics (aka: using his bard songs), was attacked by one of those half-dead enemies that somehow managed to crawl past the armed part of the group.

Bereft of his trusty rapier (thanks to the paladin selling it with a jovial "It's for a higher good - and he'll never use it, anyway!"), he took one of his quills and threw it at the enemy.

"Sure..." the almighty DM said. "You're going to kill that man with a quill... go on, roll two 20 in a row and I'll let you roll damage."

And thus the enemy died with a quill piercing his brain through his left eye... :D

I love hearing bard tales! I never thought of playing as a poetic bard, I always play as a minstrel bard. Killing a zombie with a quill! That is hillarious! My bard now has an apprentice who is now a level seven bard named Charlie. I have used the leadership feat to attract allies, since I'm the only player now I can create a party of npcs with my main character. I have a ex noble woman who is a swashbuckler at level eight now and a valiant fighter adventurer who is also at level eight. I have a strong party of characters, and also have a relic called the cape of montebanc which allows me to transport three other characters over four hundred feet away from a battle should the need arise that I need to escape. Also I have the goats of travail which are three little ornate statues that one I can summon one every week and one every month and one every twenty four hours. I'm hoping to attract more party members.

@deweyduquesne ~ My catching up to do with that series will have to be after this semester, it's crunch time now. I'm going to the Renaissance Faire tomorrow and can't wait!
