TEA EGGING

HI THERE I AM NEW.
Anyway, yes, tea eggs. I recently discovered this Asian snack on food gawker and decided to make them last night. A long process, but they are delicious.

HERE ARE MY TEA EGGS:

http://i34.tinypic.com/212dc1y.jpg

So, they're just hard-boiled eggs cooked for 2 hours, shell lightly cracked and then boiled again in tea and spices. I used a mixture of chai tea, black tea, cinnamon and clove. They were delicious :3 The recipe is over here if you want to try and make them yourself~ They look better than mine though. I'm not sure I cooked them long enough XD

Have you discovered any weird/interesting foods lately? Tell me about them :D

Twisted Insanity 10-02-2009 08:57 PM

That's interesting. I've never heard of tea eggs before. They sound and look good, though. Unfortunately, I don't have any weird recipes to share with you. =[

Gawqueenpenguin 10-02-2009 09:23 PM

applewagon 10-02-2009 09:33 PM

Erailea 10-02-2009 09:37 PM

they remind me of Easter eggs XD Too bad I don't like hard boiled eggs, if I did I'd probably try that, they look interesting

kittykatt89 10-02-2009 09:38 PM

Tea eggs are amazing!

I recently discovered this Asian fruit that looks like a REALLY TINY apple. When you bite into it, it's sort of dry and sweet. It's sort of strange. I don't like it, but thought I'd share anyway. Ha ha. xD

are you talking about a pear-apple? I think it's also called an Asian apple. Shaped like an apple, but tastes and colored like a pear XD

I love trying need foods.
I've never seen one in real life, but I want to try a dragonfruit SO BAD.

Those look, interesting.
I'm not one to judge before trying the food, but it doesn't look appealing to me. I'd eat it anyways just to see what it tasted like. ^^

I LOVE dragon fruit and most other cactus type fruits like prickly pear fruit and cactus pads. They are hard to find sometimes though. I love cactus can't you tell? lol XD Cactus pads are fantastic in omelets or dipped in ranch dressing or on tacos. I eat a lot of weird fruits and veggies and people's reaction to it is funny a lot of the times. I also eat veggie chicken and fake meats that I get odd looks for when people find out what it is. Other than that I don't eat anything all too weird.

They taste like tea? Even with the yolk?
I'm imagining a hard-boiled egg, and I know whites are easy for picking up flavours, but the texture isn't being great with my imagination.

I'll have to try it out sometime; although, I admit, I'm still a little hesitant.
How does it smell, taste, feel?

Although, I must admit, when the egg is out of it's shell, it looks quite lovely.

Growing up, my mother would make something similar to these- I suppose it is the Jewish version of the Tea Egg. Instead of reboiling the eggs in tea, she would bake them with onion skins and liquid for a couple of hours. It gave the eggs the same effect except they turned out all nice and oniony in flavor. They went really nicely with roasted veggies.

Since I am a tea lover, I will probably try to make these. Ironically I just read about them recently- I think when I was exploring my WikiHows for the day. I love tea- I love eggs- this just seems a natural conclusion to two deep seeded loves. I am wondering how they would come out with a nice jasmine green or a Ti Kuan Yin. Maybe even some hibiscus for color.

Sound really nice, ill try it. Thanks ^^

fuyumi_saito 10-03-2009 04:11 PM

well, that's very interesting. I might try it sometime, but all I have is green tea..It might work *shrugs* I would love to try it though. It looks very pretty ^^

Yeah, it's sort of like that. But it doesn't taste like a pear... I can't really describe it. It's kind of plain and just... dry sweet.

I had some leftover mashed potatos (more like violently stired with a fork..) And made some kinda hashbrown-ish things. I took a tothpick and drew some of my favorit charecters on them befor I cooked them and they came out all mesed up...so I sat there sadly eating their misshapen heads for breakfast...they tasted good though.

I'm hungry now...

Xrabbite 10-04-2009 12:54 AM

OMG I'm tea egging right now!!

I'm using chai, jasmine, and green tea bags :3 I can't wait to see how they turn
out. I'm so glad I found this topic xD

shadow never seen 10-04-2009 03:58 AM

they look rather good, but 2 hours?!
that just.. I don't know what to think of that. o.0

Moxie 10-04-2009 09:52 PM

I made some tea eggs today. I used five spice, Lipton loose leaf yellow label, and some masala spices. They came out pretty good. I have some extra for lunch tomorrow. I boiled them in the tea for about 1.5 hours- but I had made the tea extra dark and prepared it with all the spices before adding my cracked eggs. I also added salt to the whole thing- this helps the other flavors get through.

O3O

Interesting, they seem quite cool! =D I'll have to make some one day while I'm alone at home (cause I do believe if my mom saw me making tea-eggs, she'd think I was insane XD lol)

Sabysal 10-05-2009 11:51 PM

tea eggs

does it have to be a certain type of tea or can be any?

applewagon 10-06-2009 03:51 AM

Yaaay 8D I hope everyone enjoyed their tea eggs!

shadow never seen - Yeah, I know it takes ages (you actually boil them again for another 8-9 hours..) but, it's worth it in my opinion XD

Sabysal - I guess you could use any tea. It says black tea is the most common, and it will penetrate through the cracks in the shell more (for the design on the actual egg) but regular tea should work fine~

Xaef 10-07-2009 03:36 AM

Those look and sound delicious! I'll have to try making them!

FAGGY CHAN 10-07-2009 06:43 AM

It's pretty.
And I like hard boiled eggs.
But not tea. ):
