My sister is the worst person at sleeping through the night that I have ever heard of. She wakes up every couple hours or so to go the bathroom or get a drink of water or something. She seems to think it is completely normal, but I keep telling her that it isn't normal and she should try to do something about it. I have heard that you should really try and get at least 5 hours of continuous sleep to get into the deep sleep mode (REM or whatever it is). What do people think? Am I just over reacting? Do any of you not sleep through the night? Is it normal?

It's what people say...but really I think it depends on the person. I mean, aside from it all, your sister doesn't feel tired or anything, does she?

She doesn't really say she is tired, but she sometimes is really crabby when she gets woken up a lot. For me, I really get tired when I don't sleep through the whole night, which I know is one of the reasons I think it is so weird. That is why I kind of want to see what other people think about how they sleep.

Well, sometimes I get up to go to the bathroom, but when I come back, I'm completely out within five minutes. I suppose there are other people who, after coming back from a trip to the bathroom, can't sleep. If that's the case I think something might be wrong.

But if it's just a slight interruption before falling asleep again within seconds, it means she's back in REM sleep.

Well does she have insomnia?
I'll wake up at night but not every couple of hours.
As long as she still gets at least 6 hours of deep sleep, she's fine
but I mean if she keeps waking up at night and gets like 2 hours asleep total...
then maybe she needs to change her sleeping habits D:

That's what I think.

What do you guys do to help you sleep? I usually eat some chicken and then I fall right asleep.

That's weird. Of all the things I thought I might hear, I never thought I would hear that. I always think of a shower as something people use to wake themselves up not put them to sleep.

Usually, that's what it does to other people too, but it seems to work the other way for me. That's why I don't shower in the morning---it makes me sleepier still. I know that a lot of my friends shower in the morning, though, and I can't imagine why.

hmm that is strange but it shows that everyone is different. I don't really have a good sleep schedule to talk about. I go to sleep whenever I feel tired, sometimes it is at 12 and sometimes it is at 5 am it just depends

For me, I have to go to bed in a very particular window or I have trouble sleeping. Usually, between 9 and 11pm. Do you feel like you get enough sleep with that kind of schedule? I know a lot of people do that, but those same people seem to drink a lot of coffee =3

Well I dont think its normal, it just that I never heard of this happening before. She should try taking one sleeping pill that would make her sleep for seven to eight hours. Or maybe we just don't know that it is normal for some reason.

Once I fall asleep I can sleep for nine hours straight, or if I go to school eight hours.

I have trouble getting to sleep - sometimes it takes me a couple of hours, and on the very bad nights I don't get to sleep at all and live the rest of the day a barely-walking zombie. I can't get to sleep if there's any nose, even if it's just something like a dryer running downstairs or my computer humming in the next room. I also sleep very very lightly - I usually don't wake up in the night, but in the morning even if I've slept for ten hours I feel like I've barely slept at all. Yeah, I have a problem.

As for your sister - I think she has a problem, too. By my untrained reckoning she probably has a type of insomnia called sleep-maintenance insomnia, which is characterized by waking up frequently in the middle of the night and usually also by having trouble getting to sleep again.

My grandmother would get up every two hours or so and use the bathroom, smoke a cig, eat, ready a few pages. Then go back to sleep like it was nothing. She would never sleep through the night and would be up at the crack of dawn.

I think your over reacting, because people have different sleep habits. If she not feeling tired or anything than theres nothing to worrie about.
I'm one that can't fall asleep...I just pass out. But once i'm a sleep, I don't wake up unless somoene wakes me up. I've been known to sleep for 15 hour straight before.

I get that way sometimes because I don't fall right asleep when I get into bed. I usually lie there for 20 to 30 minutes before actually falling asleep, but if something bugs me while I am falling asleep I take even longer to fall asleep.

I will try to cut my sister some slack, but I will always think it is really weird.

I go to bed at a decent hour, I just don't fall asleep for an hour or so later unless I'm really really tired. I'm too busy thinking about different things I guess. I'm a deep sleeper though, I'll practically sleep through anything. XD

I sleep good for a week, then don't sleep for a week, lather-rinse-repeat. The only thing I do is move around and talk a lot.
One time I woke my husband up by shouting jibberish then proceeding to beat on him with my fists. When I woke up he asked me If I'd been fighting in my dreams; I had! XD
