Year Round Schools in America?
So, I've been hearing talk about full time schools in American public schools. I've also heard about schools being in session on the weekends. My schooling is a little weird, all over the place, all the time. I'm also a senior, so it won't really affect me (unless I have children of my own). I think that our schools, and the students might benefit from schooling year round (With all those 2-3 week breaks in between of course!). The students would lose less, and the years would be more broken up and manageable. What do you all think of this? Are there pros/cons that I haven't brought up? If this went into action, how would it affect society? (Ex. Jobs, Grades.) |
I personally hope this DOESN'T happen. I enjoy my three months off :)

I think some kind of school reform would be awesome, wither year-round school, or longer school days, something! When I look back at High School, I silmutaneously regret the slacking off I did, and lament how I took it for granted.

I think year round school is a great idea.
When I was in high school, every year I would get through math, then have to start back over after summer because I would forget most of what I had learned the year before. This happened three times, before I finally got all my math credits and no longer had to take math classes. I suppose its different for everyone, but that's my opinion. |
I've been going to year round schools for nearly all my academic life, and I really liked it. I'm graduating early now, and I feel like it's been much better.
At my previous school, we never had summer break and we had really short breaks for Christmas. Usually, we didn't have spring break either. The plus sides of this is you get a lot more done. I had summer break one year and I hated it. I did absolutely nothing, got nothing done. What a huge waste! It depends on the student, I guess. However best they learn... I'd hate to start going to a year round school and be having to deal with everyone's complaining about it all the time. My schools were never like that. |
Europe generally does it a bit off both. We still have summer vacation, but we also have a week off in October, two in December/January, one in February/March and one in May.
The summer vacation for lower education begins sometimes as late as the 21st of July, but really I think 3 months is way too long and splitting up the vacation ore evenly throughout the year works really well. |
I quite liked the time off but I did slack off the whole time and not remember bits from the year before. Another problem was that in my final year at high school for the GCSEs we actually weren't able to answer some of the questions because we hadn't had the time to cover everything that was on the syllabus in class.
Year round school would probably benefit a lot of kids. Especially with GCSEs because the last 2 years are important for those and with the huge gap between them important things are forgotten. |
My school has gone year round. I like it cause we get our breaks more often. :3

A lot of kids need to work over the summer to save for college. It's hard balancing a job and schoolwork, so longer breaks give a good opportunity to do this.
|
Maybe if the States had year round school grades would improve in some of the lower scoring states. There are a few countries that have year round school, I think Japan does, doesn't it?
|
I forgot a lot of what I was taught during those summer months.

I think year-round schooling is a really good idea. Yeah, sure, you go to school alot more and miss out on the 3 month break for summer, but, think about what happens during the summer. Most teens and kids loose at least 45% of what they had just learned from doing activities that don't require any academics what so ever.
I'm in college now, but my little brother still has two more years to go of High School. I think it would definately benefit him the most. His grades in Math and English are absolutely horrid. If school was year-round, I could see the benefactors for it. Maybe he could get ALOT more extra help. Seeing as how the High School down here has afterschool tutoring sessions maybe like, one or two times out of the week. That's not enough to help kids learn and contain any more knowledge. Hopefully I don't get boo'd at for this. |
i love the year round school idea...tho i dont like the school on weekends thing...i have always enjoyed my weekends... they are my time to catch up on my sleep cause i get so little during the school week and im in college...of course thats much harder than high school and with LONG papers to write its no wonder i dont sleep much...but then again when i died i can get all the sleep i want...lol

Honestly, I have always wished I went to a year round school but I never had the money to go to a private school so I was stuck with the 3 month breaks and stuff. See, I like school, a lot. It's the only time I can get out of the house and be myself. And I'm a senior in high school too. I feel so socially deprived.
 If schools in America went year-round though, it would make me mad kinda since it's something I've always wanted but will never have. So I guess I kinda don't want year round schools to happen publicly. I don't know. I'm weird like that. And I don't think I made any sense. |

It also has one of the highest suicide rates for teenagers... That aside, countries with homogenous cultures are going to score better no matter what. It's hard to teach a diverse group of people. A shorter summer break would probably be a good thing (like 2 months versus 3) but I don't think getting rid of it would have a real effect. imo, anyway. |
That wont happen, They can think it would but lets be real...year around? what about people that have special holidays? and I don't think teachers would enjoy that one bit, because I know the kids wont
|
I think year round schooling makes a lot more sense. Three months is a long time to get out of the swing of school and forget everything you've learned. Plus, everyone I've known has always been really super bored by about halfway through month two of summer. :\ I'd rather have the shorter breaks more often, personally. Super long breaks are just boring, I'd rather be getting something done.
@Vickyll- You can still have special holidays with year round schooling >_> Who really takes vacations that are longer than two weeks at the very most? There are plenty of two week breaks in year round schools, or so I gather. Of course the teachers won't, but that's because over summer they get paid anyway :] |

sighs...
Wouldn't it just be terrible if everybody lost 3 whole months of brain food just like that? Wait... Alright, definitely liking this idea. Pros and cons just happen with every such situation. You really can't help it. Pros: Year rounds happen to lose less and spend less time reteaching it Also, eradicates the possibility of no breaks at all. Cons: School in hot dreary summer? Nooooooo~~~ The two ways this can go will be difficult... |
I don't enjoy my 3 and 1/2 months off. I always forget what I did the previouse monthes. I wouldn't have a problem with this because I am a Senior.
|
i think as much as the students would hate it, it would be very good for them. they would in fact remember more, they would get out of school faster, and they would see their friends more. but, it wouldnt be very good for popular towns that depend on tourists. the term "summer job" would be obsolete and very few teens would be able to AFFORD a job. So, i dont know. it's a double edged sword. but, for some, its a very good idea.

Kids with year round schooling get better grades on entrance exams, and go to better collages. So I would like to have my (hypotetical) kid go to one. But as I live in western NY, no one but me would be willing to pay the cost of heating and air condioning, so it will never happen. Unless the government insists.
I think, some schools are shortening their years and havng students attend on saturday to save money on heating in the winter. I do not think the people around here are looking out for thier kids futures, I belive they are only dong this to save a buck...I get so angery I could just spit. |
I'm not in school any longer, but I was trying to think if this would be beneficial for my daughter. It could be. I'm not one to say, but I keep thinking of all the students that will have to face going to school every single day. You thought you hated it before? It'd be like having a full time job. I wouldn't want to go to school every day. I could see this causing a lot of high school drop outs. Who wants to lose their summer vacation?
|
Well, I honestly think it's fine the way it is. A longer year would only create more stress for teenagers and children, and I don't mean to sound like a pessimist, but teenagers are fragile, and for some school is hell. I can't imagine suicide rates wouldn't be affected at all.
Either way though, I'm a senior so I'm uneffected. So if they did do it, I wouldn't really give it much thought. |
