A lip piercing will affect the types of jobs you will and won't be able to get. Think about the long run prospective, though... Right now, you want a lip ring because you think it's cool, or you like the way they look, I don't know. You are currently thinking in the short run for jobs. Your first job, you said you wanted to work at an Animal Shelter. Okay, so, either they will or won't hire you due to your piercing. If you plan on getting the piercing close to the time of your job, and they tell you to take it out, it will begin to close up and infect, and all of that lovely mess.
Aside from that, do you plan on having a mediocre job (AKA., McDonalds, Grocery Stores, Animal Shelters, etc..) for the rest of your life? Now, when I say mediocre, I mean the pay is only enough to get you by in the low standard conditions. Surely you plan on getting married and having children (may not kids), am I right? So you will be all the rage as a forty year old woman with a lip ring. Better yet, a sixty year old grandmother with a lip ring! Originality ftw. I rest my case. Don't waste your time on getting one. |
Piercings can affect the job you get, so when you go for an interview or to get your job app just ask if your piercings will be ok. And if not then find out if you can put a clear piece in.
I work at target, very much with the public, and they don't mind piercings. But then again, its target. You could try for a tongue ring. I have one and unless I stick my tongue out at someone or tell them i have it they never know. I knew someone for three months before they figured it out. And I wouldn't push your parents too far. My dad probably would have ripped mine out if I had gotten it done while living at home. Lol, now all he does is shake his head at me. And also. Any piercing you get, I mean any. Make sure you go to someplace professional. Claires does not count, not even for ears, you can have really bad reactions from places like that and they could be crooked. Find a tattoo or piercing place that specializes in it and watch as they unwrap the needles and whatnot. Thats the best route to go in my opinion if you choose to get it done. |
Try putting yourself in shoes of someone wanting to hire a young person who they think would have a successful career ahead of them [imagine yourself in a big company. Not a sleazy company like McDonald's or job like a Wal-Mart greeter].
Let's say the teenage kid that walks into your office comes in with snake bites, their nose pierced, eyebrow pierced, gauges, the whole nine yards. Just from how the presented themself to you, what would you say about them? Would you say "Oh they have GREAT potential!" or would it be more "Oh... One of those kind of people..." ? Honestly. If I was the employer, I surely wouldn't hire the teenager even if they happened to have the greatest personality ever or if they were the hardest worker ever. In society, looks matter whether you want to believe it or not. Don't get me wrong. I mean, I myself want to get my ears pierced a few more times and my nose as well. But if you're even thinking about going into a professional career or even just to apply for a job, it would be best to make yourself look extremely presentable. Now I know that there are always people working at places that have the piercings and everything. But do you realize the job that they have? They're probably the person behind a comic book store counter or a cashier at a fast food restaurant or grocery store. Maybe even a courtesy clerk. They aren't working in the more "succesful" fields. So if you're planning on being a teenager who doesn't care what kind of job you get and want to get the piercing you really want, then I say more power to you. But if you're planning on going somewhere beyond a grocery store or a restaurant, then I say you should reconsider. I hope I didn't offend you or anyone here. I wasn't trying to do it if I did and apologies if I did. But it's just how employers are in reality, at least from what I've seen and heard. |
Piercings and visible tattoos will ALWAYS affect your ability to get a job. Because it just doesn't look professional. Come on admit it you'd want a person with no piercings over someone with a face full of metal working on something vital like re-roofing your house or giving your kid a filling. Why? Because all that metal puts off a much different attitude then someone without them puts off. My sister had to remove her facial piercings to stand a chance at interviews.
Getting a job is all about the presentation. If you don't look the part your chances of getting the job are next to non. |
It sucks that all anyone cares about is looks. :'c
Then again, it's not like anything has changed when it comes to looks. Agh, so unless you're becoming a rock star or starting your own business, without help from other businesses. Or maybe even working from your computer at home. It pretty much affects you. |
Well, it isn't like I'll get a really good job anyways..
And I kind of want to work at a Hot Topic or Zumies too! XD, my two favorite stores ever lol. But if I tell my dad that he'll freak out cos 'it's not a nice job, only freaks work there'. That what he says >.> |
Don't do it, or else you'll end up with people being scared of you. People are freaking stupid and when they see things like that in your face they automatically assume your bad (aka) shoplifter, ect, ect.. Just wait until your older and have a more solid job to get things like that. You know when the people around you know you better then you put on.
Don't even think you're not going to get a really nice job for all you know you could be the next multi-millionaire! owning your own shop or whatever it is. So don't sell your self short and stop being so childish and wait it out. :< |
I imagine that since you're in high school, the jobs you'll mostly be looking at getting are at a mall. Honestly, it just depends where you want to work - if it's a teen focused store like Hot Topic or PacSun, they won't care about your lip being pierced. However, if it's a dapartment store like Macy's or JC Penny's - you can forget that. Same goes for working at a grocery store, most employees do not want their cashiers to have anything else pierced but the ears.
My suggestion would be establish your job first - then you'll know the dress code. And if you do happen to get the piercing first, just take it out during the job interview and work - wear it any other time. Pretty much, I believe you can still get the piercing and have a good job. You just have to remove it for work if your work doesn't allow it. |
Actually you can have piercings and visible tattoos in the nursing field. Though a lot of places require you to take the piercings out at work.. Though as for tattoos, if you cover them in an interview, and then like a few months later you show them off, they can't fire you.
I don't think a lip piercing is bad, it just really depends if you wanna take it out a lot. One of my friends works in the food industry, and they're pretty open minded there, but they still don't like facial piercings. At least, not if you are going to deal with costumers. |
There is a difference between why he said you shouldn't get it and what he really thought. Still not sure about that thought, since I am clueless about my own parents, but this is really an issue of control. Even if you find all the info you need to prove him wrong, it is very likely you will end up with another answer to why you shouldn't get the piercing: "Because I say so." Just a warning!
Really, though, I know someone who got a lip piercing and has been hiding it from his parents just by not wearing it around them. So it really shouldn't matter having the piercing for when you get a job. Just don't wear it if you're trying to be formal... I really don't like most lip piercings, but I find very thin loops to be attractive, so that is my suggestion. |
I know how you feel. I'm 16 and I want to get my lip pierced but my mum won't let me. Dx
But yeah, it will affect your chance on getting a job. We were having a debate in Irish class the other day. Our teacher said if two people came in to her for a job interview and one was nicly presented, smartly dressed as was the other person but if one of them had any visible tatoo's or piercings her view of them would change and she would be more inclined to hire the other person. So yeah. I'd say hold off on it for a while because you never know, you might not like it after a few years. As you mentioned, you would be considered an 'emo'. But you might grow out of that style in a few years. I used to dress 'emo' when I was about 14-15 but I grew out of it and I'm not all angry that I'm not allowed the piercing because I know I'll just find it annoying soon.. Besides, they're banned in my school so I'd just have to go to the bother of sticking an ugly plaster over my mouth every morning AND have to go around school with it all day.. Ew. :P |
Well the part that really bugs me is when your dad said "People don't like that." He's pretty much telling you not to be who you are because people may not like it. That's really shitty of a parent to say.
But yes it could effect what type of job you get. Of course you could always take it out while on the job, not like it's permanent you know. Honestly there aren't really any downs to getting it. You could take it out, even let it close, just whatever if it turns out to not look good, or if you don't like it or can't get a job. So tell your dad to let you be your own individual person and to let you express yourself and then tell him that you could always take it out, it's not a big deal. The next time he wants to try something new be like "NO dad, people don't like that..." |
well, as much as i love to argue with parents as much as i possibly can, your dad may have a point. depending on the type of job u apply for, piercings can play a major role in if they even CONSIDER hiring u or not. so, be careful with stuff like that.
