Smash, paint, or Carve Pumpkins?

We all have different things that we do for Hollween when it comes to Pumpkins! What do you do? Carv them? Paint them? or Smash them? or maybe somthing else.

I carved mine! And then I baked the seeds (and burned them because I forgot about them) But the carvings came out pretty good. I should post the picture... hmmm....

If it's new, then I crave, if it's old, then I smash! XDD

When my family still celebrated Halloween, we'd paint the pumpkins. That way, they would be less likely to rot. Also, Mom would then use the pumpkins to make pumpkin pies after Halloween was over.

I carve mine and then throw the seedy mush at my sister, or well I did this year anyways. Next year I might just paint them up instead of going through all that messy trouble to carve 'em. xD

I carve the pumpkin.I scoop the seeds and toast them and then eat them as snacks.

I haven't carved pumpkins in a long time. Usually we buy them, and decorate with them through Halloween and Thanksgiving. I saw a smashed pumpkin the other day when I was driving through the neighborhood; it made me sad as I know someone stole it and then smashed it. I guess it would be fun to have a pumpkin throwing contest at some sort of event, but it's not so cool to steal peoples pumpkins.

Carve the pumpkins and toast the seeds ^.^ yummy!

Lighten23 10-26-2009 01:15 AM

I used to carve them. But smashing them is funner! :D

I still have to carve mine. For the longest time I would not carve pumpkins do to the nasty, squishy insides but I think I've grown out of that with some of the things I have to deal with work. Besides, I found out that I do like pumpkin seeds when baked and salted.

Pumpkins.

I usually carve a pumpkin. I've never tried painting one and I don't see any reason to smash one. Though I remember years ago when I was a kid we had a pumpkin sitting around in the house a couple of weeks after Halloween was over that no one had gotten around to throwing away for some reason. It had started rotting too. Well my cat ran through the room and knocked it on the floor and it smashed and rotten juice and insides from the pumpkin got all over the floor and it stunk so bad! Even after the mess was cleaned up, it stunk bad in that room for days. At the time, being a little somewhat bratty kid, I thought it was funny.

My grandfather grew our pumpkins this year. So I have like... FOUR. And I'm probably going to end up painting one, carving one, and leaving the other two be. XD I'm too lazy.

Zeigeist 10-26-2009 05:34 AM

Carve, always.
Last year I didn't, though. I drew his face on with a pen. I named him "Henry" and I kept him on my desk for about five months before he rotted.

Cherish 10-26-2009 03:30 PM

Carve the big ones, and bake the little ones in pies!

And when I say "carve" I mean draw a face on, then hopelessly stab at it until I give up.

koriia 10-26-2009 03:47 PM

This year my fiance and I carved a pumpkin with a face and another pumpkin with X buttons and left another pumpkin blank and piled them on top of each other and made a pumpkin Man!!!!

K0a 10-26-2009 04:30 PM

I enjoy painting pumpkins best. I don't have knife skills and any patience to sit and empty out the seeds and such.
Plus I don't have the heart to make a mess and smash pumpkins. I have a fetish about making messes.

Sprinklebuns 10-27-2009 02:08 AM

I like carving pumpkins! One year I carved a pokemon face on my pumpkin (bulbasaur)...but then some evil being smashed him sometime during Halloween night. :(

Doomfishy 10-27-2009 02:19 AM

Carve, light with a candle, set outside, wait for trick-or-treaters, wake up early, smash!

And definitely bake the seeds. :D

Evaleain 10-27-2009 04:22 PM

We used to carve, but no one does that anymore. Dx

mwahhaha 10-27-2009 05:22 PM

@ koriia Sweet, a pumpkin man! lol

I normally carve them, but I'm thinking of painting them more. that way they last longer. My little sister normally paints hers though.

Halcyon Dreams 10-27-2009 06:27 PM

I have only ever done pumpkin carving one year with my dad. I have never done a pumpkin smash. That actually sounds like a lot of fun. I hope to do some pumpkin carving this year as well, and maybe watch a really good scary movie. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I'd also love to try painting too. I never thought of painting a pumpkin. That actually seems pretty cool.

my neighborhood doesn't even do real trick or treating anymore. they're all mormon and do a thing called trunk or treating (apparently that keeps the pedophiles and murderers away). they line up their cars in the church parking lot and kids walk down the line. 20 minutes and all your candy hunting is done. i'm gonna take my kidlets to a few of them i think as i'm not mormon, but i want my kid to do some sort of trick-or-treating even if its the lame version. last year i was pissed cuz i was excited about costumes and candy but forgot about trunk-or-treating and NOBODY (NOT A SINGLE PERSON) came trick-or-treating to my house.

and i paint my pumpkins. i have issues with the mess of carving them. the neighbors have mr. potato head type stuff put in their pumpkins. it's pretty cute actually.

akinmytua 10-28-2009 01:13 AM

Today I painted a pumpkin, Friday I am going to carve a pumpkin. After I carve it I am going to take the seeds out, strain out the pulp, coat the seeds with garlic salt and paprika, bake and enjoy my pumpkin seeds.
And when my carved pumpkin started to turn green from the mold, I SMASH it! He He! Does that mean that I do all three?

Bandit of Love 10-28-2009 02:09 AM

I enjoy pumpkins for many different reasons. One is because it's typically free. At my college we have a large gathering where everyone brings or picks out a pumpkin and we all paint our pumpkins. I love it because it is such a great community building exercise. Another reason why I am partial to painting pumpkins is because typically they last longer then, whereas when you carve them they tend to rot quicker.

But I won't say that I don't enjoy carving pumpkins, that can be fun too. It's so much fun to gut the pumpkins and then create whatever you want with one a knife and your imagination.

Of course when my pumpkins get to the point of rotting and smelling badly I smash them. The way I prefer most though is tossing it out a 5th story window or so, oh when it hits the ground! I tell you, you haven't truly smashed a pumpkin unless you've thrown it out a window.
