Hm. This was a college class and the whole project was optional; it might be a different situation if there are minors involved?

I was in hospital when I was seven because I had major kidney problems so at first I had to get all sorts of blood tests and that was when I found out I was an AB+

Like ABO type, it has to do with which antigens are present on your red blood cells. Since + blood contains antigens not found in - blood, - individuals can't get transfusions from + ones, because they will form antibodies against the blood.
(The less easily avoided issue is complications during pregnancy, which can arise if a - mother who already has antibodies against + blood carries a + fetus.)
