Don't take candy from strangers!

I have been told to never EVER take candy from strangers ever since I was BORN! I believe that my parents brought me up, almost based solely upon this one teaching. Candy + Strangers = Death/Molestation/Happiness followed by death.

I have always been confident that this is the one thing that is true in my life. And then. Like a giant, all consuming pumpkin from hell, Halloween dawned upon me, throwing all of my beliefs to the wind!

Don't take candy from strangers was completely tossed aside for this one day of evil candy taking from someone who could well have licked EVERY SINGLE CHOCOLATE IN THE BOWL! I just want to hear some other opinions on the dangers of Halloween candy.

Poetrygal93 11-01-2009 01:10 PM

Well, I think it's fine to take candy from strangers as long as it's in a wrapper. And the wrapper hasn't been opened.

Okay...this post is pretty much taking away the fun out of Halloween. You can take candy from strangers...you just have to show your parents and make them check them out for any openings or little holes and what not. Be more alert on the signs! And when they say strangers they usually mean people on the streets giving out candy on a sidewalk or something. Don't be so paranoid =_= Oh and signs to watch out for at trick or treating is that if they ask you to come in and what not. Just missed out on a good holiday....

Iggy Koopa 11-01-2009 01:15 PM

I'm all for Halloween, and I'm actually fine with taking candy from strangers, and I just now realize how hypocritical I may be seeming, but the point of this thread is more about the hypocrisy that a parent would never allow a child to take the same candy from the same person on the street. I also like to rant, and when I have a point going, I often go a little over the top. I APOLOGISE IF ANYONE MAY TAKE ME AS SEEMING IGNORANT, OR TO BE TAKING THE FUN FROM A PERFECTLY GOOD HOLIDAY, FOR THIS IS NOT MY INTENTION. For this, my deepest apologies. *Bows deeply*

lol. I couldn't go trick or treating this year anyways. I was sick. But my bro came in an got so much candy! He came with a backpack full of candy AND a bag full of candy! He was dressed as Morpheus from the Matrix. I totally wished I went. If I did I would've went as a nerd for Halloween and held a calculator and huge glasses with thick frames and went with my friends. (they were also nerds for Halloween) xD

Erailea 11-01-2009 02:32 PM

The difference is, on Halloween kids trick-or-treat with their parents or in bunches, you don't do it alone. Where as if you met a random stranger offering you candy any other day, you'd probably be alone and could be kidnapped. On Halloween there are too many witnesses XP

Trick or Treat! It actually proves the "never take candy from strangers" rule. Look at what it leads to: Lots of candies, all eaten within a short amount of time. Cavities, obesity, laziness. Kids start making fun of you, you start wearing black leather, play cruel video games, watch gory movies. With it comes the violence and you end up in jail. Food there is incredibly bad for your health, so by the time you're out you're at 300 pounds and your teeth are rotten, together with your jail past you never get a job, end up a lover to some crazy old greybeard/spinster. Beware!

Okay, okay, on a more serious note... ;)

Parents would take away the hypocritical overtones by adding why and in what circumstances. For example, my mother taught me that it was perfectly okay to take candy from nice old ladies as long as I was with an adult or any other supervisor. And that candy was used to lure away children, so as long as I didn't go with them I could also take the candy and show my parents before eating.

The Wandering Poet 11-01-2009 04:19 PM

Well I don't trick or treat... ^^" for that reason as well as the fact this city... from what I was told... is somewhat of a "pothead city"... but I'm sure they'd never waste their precious substance on little kids...

That aside, I still don't eat candy by ANYONE who has had the potential of contaminating a piece of candy even on accident... so anything not sealed goes in the garbage.

When I was little though I talked to one of my neighbors who gave me a sucker... >.> my mom took it from me and gave me something else... and then threw the candy away...

Strangers are just friends you haven't met yet.

or enemies. Haha. It's impossible to say you'ld get along with everyone in the world

Okay, the danger of Halloween has been somewhat exaggerated by events in the past. When I was a kid {long before some of you were born} there were kids that were poisoned and hurt by needles in their candy. We were all in fear. Parents took Halloween candy to the hospital where they would X-ray it before the kids were allowed to eat it. I still check my kid's candy for needle marks and open wrappers.

Years later we know that these crimes were committed by parents and family members of those children. I feel kind of dumb checking their candy, but you really never know, so I would rather be safe than sorry. I have found that some of the older residents in our neighborhood save candy from year to year. It is best to get rid of candy that looks old and might have been nibbled by rodents. Usually dumdum wrappers tear when they are old and have resided in a well pawed bowl of candy.

I have warned my kids about strangers. They know they are not supposed to go away with people without permission. We live in a small town and we run into people we know when we are out and about. In the end, it has been proven that most of the time, children must beware of the people they know. Crimes against children are usually not perpetrated by strangers although that does happen. It's sick, but it is usually parents, family members, or trusted neighbors. Go Figure!

This is exactly how I felt about Trick-or-Treating. It's like "Hey, go out alone in the middle of the night and take candy from strangers at their houses!" Even if my mom checked my candy, I was always nervous. That's why I only ever trick or treated like, 3 times.

I don't like having enemies.
I'd rather ignore someone than bringing out my ugly side to them.

pianochan 11-01-2009 09:08 PM

We have an entire holiday based on taking candy from strangers. It's called Halloween.

Iggy Koopa 11-01-2009 09:11 PM

And If you had read my first post, or any of the other posts in this thread, that's kinda what we've been talking about, lol.

amyrex2 11-01-2009 09:19 PM

Iggy, If you find Halloween confusing, think of Christmas, when you (1) sit on a strange mans lap, (2 talk) tell him what you want for Christmas, get a candy cane, and your parents (3) take your picture...3 no nos broken. Right there, parents must confuse the daylights out of their children.

Go a head think of what would happen if you told your parents that some teacher had you sit on his lap for your picture to be taken. And was given some candy for your effort.

Iggy Koopa 11-01-2009 09:23 PM

I don't see much wrong with sitting on people's laps, and pictures are ok, as long as the child and the lap provider are fully clothed. XD But I see what you mean, and I think that that's why these rules were created, so that we can tell the difference between Santa, and a strange old hobo who asks if you wanna take a toy out of his burlap sack (Less of a difference than you might think.)

BinkaKitty 11-02-2009 02:14 AM

that is so hard to say. even if the candy is still in a wrapper, you never know if the person poisoned the candy and has some sort of resealing thingy. i don't know. i don't like taking candy from strangers, personally. i would prefer to get candy from people i know. or just go out and buy my own candy.

p o p p e t ♥ 11-06-2009 07:15 PM

Everytime my mother ever told me not to take candy from strangers I'd say "But strangers have the best candy!"

Haha but really, no one is going to sit there and lick all of the candies in the bowl to hand out to little kids. How freaking weird. And even so unless they have some nasty contagious disease or illness, it wouldn't be a big deal anyway. The only reason you really have to be ware of the candy is for someone who really is a sicko who may poison it or of corse as your parents and school have warned, put razor blades in some of it.

I don't think you'd have anything to worry about. And when your parents say not to take take candy from strangers what they are really saying is "Don't let anyone you don't know offer you something that sounds great if you follow them or are alone" things like that. So unless they tell you to come inside and get some candy out of the candy bowl in the basement Halloween is totally fine :]

LustyScoundrel 11-06-2009 07:20 PM

What a silly contradiction.

Luzzy 11-06-2009 10:03 PM

I trick or treat every single year. 8D
Only sickness I've ever gotten is from eating too much candy.

My sister's friend though was poisoned. By a Tootsie Roll. xDDD ((It's mean to laugh but NO ONE eats tootsie rolls anyways. WRYYY))

I've also taken candy from Pedobear at Cawmeek Cawn. 8D It was a green-apple dum-dums through. :x And I hate green apple. :( So I gave it to my sister. We didn't get raped. :O

edit: xDDD @amyrex2's post.

Iggy Koopa 11-06-2009 10:05 PM

Lol, It's usually not the best idea to take ANY candy from pedo bear. XD

Luzzy 11-06-2009 10:36 PM

I was already 18. >:D
And my sister 17.

So we knew we'd be mostly safe. 8D

Iggy Koopa 11-06-2009 11:31 PM

Lol, I dunno, Pedo Bear is not to be trusted. at ANY point. XD

Malice Mourn 11-07-2009 12:58 AM

The only time to NOT take something from someone... Is when they offer you fruits. There could very well be razors, glass or other things that could hurt your mouth in them.
