Ever Been to a Rave **wiggles eyebrows**

So I'm wondering guys, have any of you ever been to a rave?
When I was in high school (in college now) a friend of mine and I promised to save up money and live one month as a raver (like that was our job, right?) LOL, so we thought it would be fun and ridiculous and something you can ONLY do while young. However, we've since drifted apart.
But, I still want to attend a rave (at least once). . . but I need clarification on what one is. . .
I get that it's a crazy party with techno and neon lights and crazy makeup (so fun, right?) but is it at certain clubs or is it like just a mad house party gone wild. . .
Also, do any of you have any wild party (Rave preferably) stories?

(oh, and just so it's clear: i'm not in it for the drugs or anything. I'm on the straight and narrow.)

Keep it PG-13 guys!

Sizzla 11-11-2009 04:55 AM

Oh man, I have all kinds of rave stories. :XD But they'll have to wait until tomorrow, because I'm off for the night, and it would require a lot of typing. XP

Get excited though -- I've been to a bunch of parties. My bff and I had a time of it senior year in high school.

mwahhaha 11-11-2009 05:07 AM

Wahahahaha! looking forward to hearing these stories and getting rave-tastic info from you. :3 G'night!

Raves are so much fun, when you go with the right people.

See, I love to dance, so when one of my 'girlfriends' (female friend) took me to this rave, we just danced all night. It was hilarious, how many guys tried picking me up on the dance floor. ^.^

Jack MacGaven 11-11-2009 05:03 PM

Not really a rave party more of a cyber-gothic industrial party.
Basically the same thing when you look at outfits, but the music is darker.

It's your most ordinary dance party really, but really fun.
There are a lot of free minded people at those kind of bashes.
And best part: no one will judge you about looks or what you do.

Those kind of parties are usually held at clubs etc.

Alrighty, so most of the raves I've been to (and I've been to about 20-30 -- there were a lot, and it was quite awhile ago) have been in public venues... I've been to raves at the horse racing track here in town, at random warehouses and concert venues, at clubs, at community center-type places... I even went to a rave at a rollerskating rink. Really, anywhere an event coordinator would want to throw a party. I've also traveled to raves -- one in Oklahoma City and one in St. Louis.

Of course the music you'll hear is techno, happy hardcore, trance, drum and bass... Those are pretty typical. Some of it I liked more than others, but regardless of how obnoxious a set it was, I always had a great time dancing the night away. And, by the end, I was exhausted.

My BFF and I used to tell our moms we were spending the night at each other's houses, then we'd go to a party, dance until dawn and then go sleep in the car. XP Probably not the safest thing to do, but we were pretty convinced our moms wouldn't like us going to raves.

Now yes, there will always be people doing drugs, but that's something you can easily avoid. I really see it as a non-issue anymore, but raves get a bad rap for the drug culture that is definitely a part of the raver community. I always had a fine time without drugs, and I found that the atmosphere was plenty intoxicating as it was.

Of course we always dressed up -- That was back when Hot Topic first started opening stores, and they really catered to ravers. I bought plenty of big pants and small t-shirts to wear to parties, and I even sewed my own pair of fuzzy phat pants for raves in the winter. We'd glitter ourselves up, make candy jewelry and bedeck ourselves to the max. I even had a whistle at one point, which I'm pretty embarrassed to admit. I always hated those kids with obnoxious whistles, but once I got one myself, it was totally fun. XD

I kinda miss the rave days. My BFF and I made a lot of great friends that we saw on the regular at parties around here, and though I haven't seen most of those people for years now, I still have fond memories. We would go to a party every weekend most of the time, so we kind of did do the rave lifestyle for a bit. XD

But toward the end, parties seemed to be getting more and more lame, and there was more police intervention, and somehow, I quit hearing about parties and quit going. :( Sad, but such is life. It would be kinda fun to go again sometime, but I think everyone would probably look at me funny, since I'm 28. XP

Whoah that's pretty much heavy stuff there Sizzla!

Though you shouldn't worry about age. I was at a party one time and there was this 45/50 year old couple dancing the night away in very stylish pilot and stewardess costumes.
It was quite fun to see.

For me I have a rave in two weeks at a local bar/club in the city where I live.

it depends on what kind of rave you go to.

There's basically three classifications.

Middle school, Underground, and middle aged.

Middle school, is just what it sounds, a school dance.
it's a party at someones house with no substances, bad music, and strobe lights.
and a bunch of young kids sipping soda with bright colours on and gyrating for half an hour, then they leave cause they have to go to sleep, because it's late.

Underground, is a little bit more extreme.
It's a party somewhere abandoned, or a house, or apartment. Usually a loft, or some kind of empty warehouse. Drugs, and decent music, neon lights, strobes, bright colours, probably sex. Not for anyone under 17, or over 25.
Personally, I dislike raves, but many of my friends go to them.
they're really dangerous.

the last one, is just some stupid pub/bar/club thinking it would be a good idea to have "Rave night" where it's just like the first one, but with drinks, maybe some drugs, and old people.

jumpinjeannie 11-12-2009 03:20 AM

My best friend in college and I were planning on throwing a huge rave out in the middle of no-where Kansas (where I was attending school). It got broken up during the preliminary planning stages...

MoonLightRaine 11-12-2009 04:43 AM

I've been to the middle aged kind of rave... Its alright, better than the underground to me because I'm not looking to get truly messed up. I've heard plenty of stories to know better than going to an underground rave ^_~
I don't have much of a story other than, I got really drunk went to the bar and danced in the strobe lights with a few friends. Some guys hit on me bought me drinks and sent me off with their numbers (though I never called) It was just a one time kind of thing, I's much rather stick to drinking with friends at their house and getting crazy.

fuyumi_saito 11-12-2009 04:50 AM

No, I hear they're crazy though. I'm sure they would be interesting. I would like to go to one at least once XD

While most of this is accurate, why do you say they're dangerous? I never once feared for my life, or felt threatened at a rave, and I don't see why you would think they were dangerous... I actually feel a lot of camaraderie and unity at raves. Everyone's kind of on the same level, just dancing the night away and not caring what anyone else thinks. I always felt good vibes at the raves I've attended, and from your definition, they were all 'underground' parties.

That's what the concept of PLUR (peace, love, unity & respect) is all about anyway, and I think that most ravers take PLUR quite seriously. It's sort of the mantra of the rave community.

Have you been to a rave?

mwahhaha 11-12-2009 08:19 PM

I was wondering about that "dangerous" comment, too. What's dangerous about them? I wouldn't know, obviously - since I've never been to one.
MAAAN!!! I want to go to a rave so badly now. I live within day trip driving distance of Chicago. where are they there? I'm determined to find one. :3
slightly off topic: have any of you guys seen "a midsummer's night rave" ? t'was a weird movie . . . and is NOT why i want to go to a rave, lol.

Sizzla 11-12-2009 08:34 PM

Well, Chicago probably has a lot going on, so here's a link to a message board with a bunch of promoted parties on it:

AND OMG, this one would be awesome:

Dieselboy and AK1200. XD I always had a love of drum n' bass.

Scarling Zombie 11-12-2009 10:57 PM

I've never been to a rave, but out where I'm from, we have corn parties.
Everyone gets into their car late at night and drive to a cornfield.
You have to bring your own drugs though. We put them all into a bucket and pass them around like popcorn.
We dance and we talk. Sex, drugs, fighting.
It was a big huge mess.
Everyone was paranoid, and they thought the cops were coming.

mwahhaha 11-13-2009 03:30 AM

@Sizzla: thank you! these links are awesome! now I just have to grab my friends and some awesome clothes.
@Scarling Zombie: I've never heard of corn parties before. that's interesting.

Namanu 11-13-2009 04:55 AM

glowsticks+techno+cool clothes/makeup+more glowsticks+people doing glowsticking/ jumpstyle etc.+lights+drugs(sometimes)+more glowsticks+dancing+"moving how the music takes you"+glowstick paint?hmm+awesome fantastic fun=RAVE

Scarling Zombie 11-13-2009 05:31 AM

My town is 98% cornfield, so we kids do what we have to.

mwahhaha 11-13-2009 07:21 PM

@Namanu: sounds like it equals awesome :3 (minus the drugs)
@scarling zombie: at least you aren't cow tipping. ;)

trippy 11-13-2009 07:44 PM

I've been going to them since I was like, I don't even know. xD; The biggest place down here is rocket town that I know of. SR3L came down here a few months ago with a few other big DJs and I went to that one.

uncle jo 11-14-2009 12:38 AM

I've only been to raves at anime conventions. Not real club or house party raves but I loved it. I get to dress in crazy clothes, use every source possible to make myself glow, and dance like a complete idiot without anyone caring. It's a really judge-free place. If you want to just go for the atmosphere and the dancing without worrying about drugs and stuff like that, I suggest anime conventions. If you can find one near you that does it.

I've always wanted to find a rave club or something but I don't think there are any around where I live.

Truinthil 11-14-2009 01:23 AM

I stood outside in line for one for four hours once only to be told right before getting into the door that they were full and no one else was going to get in. I was in a lot of rage. Then on the way to drop off my friends I got a speeding tickets. I raged even harder.

Some Random Randomness 11-14-2009 02:05 AM

I've never been to raves as in lots of strobe lights, neon colours and blacklights or whatever, but I have been to some pretty wild parties at cool clubs.

In Holland we have a bit of a party in between rave and party. It usually features upbeat djs, a bit of techno music, alcohol and a lot of dancing.

I'm not much of a dancer sober, but when I'm drunk I get really into it. I can dance for hours when I'm drunk, and then regret it afterwards. :P

Caroline 11-14-2009 02:56 AM

I was raving every week/every other week for a a couple months last year. They're really fun as long as you can avoid creepers. There's a couple stages with different styles of electronic music and tons of flashing lights. My first rave was in a warehouse with a 2500 people capacity. Little ones are deffffinitely my favorite :) The massives (over 10,000 people, and the biggest ones get to around 100,000, ie Monster Massive, Electric Daisy Carnival, Nocturnal, Together As One, etc) are just tooo much for me, and a lot of people that go are just looking to do drugs and get crazy as opposed to actually enjoying the music and dancing. Be prepared at any rave to be around A TON of people on drugs though (mainly ecstasy). It might be weird for someone who is sober and has never done ecstasy, lol. & These things typically last all night unless they are broken up, so make sure to stay hydrated and take breaks from dancing. & Don't lose the friends you go with!!
