Okay, I'm addicted to Sushi. Badly. Not only sushi, but all kinds of Japanese foods ranging from nigiri, sashimi, sushi, salads, you name it!
I have a few questions for all of you:
1. What is your favorite kinds of sushi?
Mine is usually the Shrimp Tempura Roll & Cucumber Roll
2. Why do most sushi places have to be expensive?
In my state, rolls are anywhere from $3 to $10 each. Most of the yummy rolls are about $10, which can kill your budget if you're not careful.
3. Have you ever tried to make home-made Sushi? How was it..difficult, medium, or easy?
My brother requested that next Monday, I cook him a sushi dinner for his 21st birthday. Now keep in mind, I'm european and although I love sushi, I have never ever attempted to cook or make home-made sushi. So now I'm stuck with the task of looking up recipes and buying fresh ingredients for Monday. If any of you have made their own sushi, will you care enough to give me tips? Thanks.

I'm quite picky with what fish I eat, so I have never tried sushi, for the fact that I know I don't like most of the fish used. However, I do think they look very pretty, the presentation of them is superb.

My all time fav is Unagi...which is fresh water eel. I also like shrimp, tuna and salmon sushi.
here, you can find rolls from 3-5$ a piece. They have a sushi maker at a Krogers (grocery store) near by that sells a group of eight rolls for around a $1 a piece depending on the type.
I hate american sushi, ie: California rolls

What is wrong with California Rolls?
Granted, I go to a sushi restaurant that has a roll for every state, plus a tokyo roll, and a couple of city rolls like Sedona rolls and Phoenix rolls.
The California rolls are delicious when I eat them, although I usually get the Golden California rolls, which has caviar wrapped around the rolls.
I see alot of people hating the California rolls, and it makes me wonder if I'd hate it too if I try to order it in different restaurants (haven't yet).
There's this grocery store called Fry's in my state that sells boxed sushi and sashimi, as well as seaweed salad from $6 to $9. It's not alot and the portions for that price is actually smaller than the restaurant portions.

Oh.... you mean imitation crab? Ewww... the restaurant I go to refuses to use imitation anything. That's probably why I don't hate California rolls, because none of the rolls have anything fake in them.

While the crab meat is imitation crab- it is still real fish. . it's just whitefish
I'm a sushi fan - tuna an salmon are my favorites- especially spicy tuna.
I try not to eat fish very often though, the environmental impact of fishing is pretty devastating & I don't like to support destructive industries - so I generally eat veggie sushi.

We have a couple of Japanese markets around town. I love sushi. I like krab(imitation crab), vegtable, eel and octopus. But I really like the Bento box lunches they make. I usually get salmon with rice and vegtables. I've tried making my own rice balls. They never seem to turn out right though.

My sister made homemade sushi AND riceballs... But, I couldn't eat...
A. Sushi, because I don't like to eat fish, and two, the scent of the seaweed and vinegar gagged me.
B. Just the seaweed. >.>
I MUCH prefer chinese cuisine.

My favorite is usually sashimi sushi (doesn't really matter what kind). I love the sweet taste it gives off. I usually don't put wasabi on it either, it's not the spiciness but it hides the sweet taste.
Though ever since coming back from my trip to Japan, I've had a hard time enjoying sushi in America. It just doesn't as good as the sushi I had in Japan. I don't know if the place I went to in Japan were high class or not because my host family took me there and I didn't really ask for the prices. They had such a wide variety it'll blow your mind off. They even had natto sushi which was just odd....
Now I just eat sushi to satisfy my craving for sushi. There's this place in my town called Fuji, it's a sushi buffet. $11 for lunch and $15 for dinner. Then it's unlimited sushi, they won't charge you on how much you eat, won't charge for special orders, won't charge custom rolls, won't charge even if you order like two giant plates of sashimi. They only charge you for drinks and water is free. People have Fuji isn't really that good but it matters little to me now since I haven't found an American sushi place comparable to the one in Japan.
As for making sushi, the easiest ones to make are rolls. This is how me and my friend makes it, the rice is on the outside of the roll. Lay out that bamboo mat you'll be using to roll up the sushi. Place some sticky rice on the mat and flatten it. Not too much but just enough so it's leveled. This is best done with some equally flat and leveled so the ladle you used to scoop the rice out probably won't work, unless it's those flat ladles. If you want, "cut" off the edges so it's nice and straight. Then lay out the sheet of seaweed on top of the rice. Now to the fillings, this is pretty hard to explain but don't put too much, otherwise you won't be able to roll it and too little it'll be really small. Lay out the fillings 1/4 way up the seaweed in a straight line across the seaweed. So when you cut those ingredients, cut them into strips as it'll be much easier when you get this part. After you think you've laid enough, take the edge of the bamboo mat and roll it up. The rice should keep it together. After it's rolled up, take your knife and cut it up into finger sized rolls.
A nice way to give it a good smell is to put some vinegar in the rice when you're you're mixing it. After it's done cooking of course. But some people hate the smell of vinegar so make sure to find out if your guests like vinegar.

I am not a fan of most sushi because of the seaweed that is wrapped around it. I can never bite trough it and because my mouth is so small, I can't eat it whole. And I don't like sesame. That seems to be on a lot of sushi.
But I LOOOOVE nigiri! It's simple and it tastes deliciouse! It's not overloaded with a bunch of flavors. My absolute favorite is nigiri with white tuna. All it is is a rectangle of gummy rice with a rectangle of white tuna on top. Dip that in a bit of soy sauce... mmmmm... mouthgasm right there!

I grew up on Sushi, my mother used to make it all the time! Two of my favorites have always been Toibiko (flying fish egg) and Chou-Toro (marbled tuna) Nigirizushi (sliced fish on rice squares). I love Seaweed Inari(sweet tofu pouches) and Jellyfish strips too.
I make sushi a few times a year, the ingredients can get very expensive though. Using shrimp and fake crab meat a lot makes it a bit cheaper, as does using shredded tuna. Other When making Sushi rice, it's good to go with a long grain rice, I prefer Jasmine rice. Make sure to rinse the rice in water until it runs clear before cooking it, the rice will hold together better that way. It's ok to under cook the rice as well, just to the point where it isn't hard at all, but still damp. I like to mix rice wine vinegar with my Sushi rice, but it's up you your tastes how you want to do that. When forming the rice squares, make sure your hands are wet, it makes it easier to handle the rice. Try to stay away from cheap frozen fish for sushi making, it often isn't clean enough for eating raw as they expect you to fry or bake it.
For Sushi rolls, if you don't like seaweed or cant get it, using lettuce or cabbage leaves works well. it's a bit tricky to do it right, but you dip the leaves into boiling water til they are wilted, rise them immediately in cold water, then lay them out before you use them. They stick together so only do one leaf at a time, it saves some havoc. After you lay them out, you can pat out the rice on them, add the filling of choice, then roll them as you would with seaweed.
For roll fillings, I don't like to use shredded tuna, but it's pretty good with a dash of soy sauce, some ginger and pepper flakes. Imitation crab meat works well as does whole shrimps. You can make your own combination with vegetables and even fruit for sweet Sushi, that's the beauty of sushi rolls.
If anyone is interested, I found a great recipe for "Candy Sushi". It's been demanded at parties ever since I found it a few years ago. If you want something unique for a party snack, these are delicious. Candy Sushi

I'm actually a waitress in a japanese restaurant and one of my absolute favorite rolls that we have is called the "dynamite roll". It has wasabi tobiko, spicy mayo, hamachi, avocado and crunchy bits of tempura in it. It's soooo yummy. After that, I like the spicy crunchy tuna roll. I like rolls with a bite. Then my favorite nigiri would have to be Escolar and Amaebi (I love the crunchy shrimp heads).. And then anything with Jellyfish is a plus!
I actually know why sushi is expensive but I'm so tired, I can't remember the answer... so I'll have to get back to you on that DX
And I have made sushi before! I love to do it, but mixing the right type of rice is really annoying to me lol. It's not difficult at all though

Honestly it depends on where you are. I've come to realize that when I was living in an area where sushi is hard to come by; southern virginia is was MUCH more expensive. But if you live in San Francisco- Ive come to realize they're not as expensive.
Further I suggest trying to find a buffete sushibar sometimes they exist!
But my favorite!?
KAPPA MAKI! I LOVE cucumbers. (It's a vegitarian one, I'm not a vegetarian but I LOVE cucumbers)
My second favorite is unagi.
My third favorite? I had roe of some sort in a riceball that was actually really good. I never thought I'd like it because it's well, fish eggs. But I do like it. ^^
Kami: You stalker! jk XD -Ou! I wasn't aware that jellyfish is an actual sushi o.o how does it taste??

The place I live in is like...well, 95% asian, therefore, you'll see tons and tons of Asian Restaurants. Usually Chinese but they do have quite a few Japanese ones.
Not expensive either. $3-5
My absolute favorite are the california rolls even though I know very well it's imitation crab meat. The place I go to makes them sooo well.

I love the omelet nigiri. I know its not fish but its just sooooo good. instead of salt they use sugar and it gives it a nice contrast to the egg, then combined with the tart of the rice vinegar and the seaweed its just a nice combination. All of the japanese food i've ever tried i've loved and wished i could get more. Miso soup is amazing!

Well my favorite Sushi place is $15 for chefs choice and that is what I get every time I go. My other favorite place in the Sushi Belt which I really cool. It isn’t that much when you go during lunch, each plate has like two pieces and they range from $1 to $5 I LOVE that place!

I have but I don’t do it with raw fish, I will leave that to the professionals. It takes practice and a knack to get used to rolling them. I Like doing it I would say Medium but it can get rather difficult fast. I always have a problem cutting my roll once it’s done.
I could live off of Sushi!!

To answer your questions, I prefer the nigiri rolls ^^ but I actually have to confess I like teriaki chicken a lot better than sushi.
I think the price is that high because you have to be sure it's quality fish, I mean it's raw, and if it's not good enough, you can get very sick, and you have to pay higher prices for fresher quality fish.
And never tried to make it, but want to, unfortunately, it's hard to find the ingredients where I live

There are other kinds of sushi as well! Not just raw fish.
Kappa Maki is a cucumber roll
Then there is Inari which is tofu skin with rice inside of it.
Also there is Tamago sushi it's a sweet egg sushi that is cooked. Kind of like an omelette.
And then there's the Kobe beef sushi which is brazed beef sushi- which is pretty much cooked in all intents and purposes.
