Just Had Surgery!
I have had 3 surgeries since I was about 15. All of them were attempts to fix my deaf ear on my right side.
This last time however, (my 4th surgery) was a tonsillectomy. My tonsils have been huge for about a year and it makes it very hard to swallow pills, and I gag way too easily. When I woke up from my surgery today, I immediately began bawling like a baby and shaking uncontrollably before I even opened my eyes. According to mom I do that every time I wake up from surgery. So of course now I can't talk and I can't eat solids for about 2 weeks. And I have discovered the WONDERFUL world that is Apple Pie Ice Cream. So these are my questions for you guys: 1) Have you ever had surgery before and what kind? 2) What was it like going under and coming to? How did you react? Were you calm or scared? 3) If you couldn't eat solids what did you eat and do you have any good suggestions other than the obvious ice cream. |
Oh my! Glad you're okay, Kid.
Surgeries and stuff like that freak me out. I worry people won't pull through or something. Like when my mother had her hysterectomy. I was out my mind. Then when the procedure was completed her doctor walks up to me says "are you ____? Come with me, please." and takes me to the bereavement room! Turns out Mom was fine and the doctor just didn't want to stand out in the waiting room, because he had been on his feet all day. He also wanted a little privacy but DUDE thanks for freaking me out. I expect the worst most of the time so taking me to a little blue room filled with posters of pseudo-soothing inspirational messages was a bad call. When I had maxillofacial surgery I guess they put me "under" dunno we never discussed it. I remember trying to talk to them though so I don't know if I was actually "out" or if I was just out of it. The surgery was to remove my impacted canines, I think they used a laser to cut into the roof of my mouth. I'm not exactly sure it was a laser.. that sounds so sci-fi like there was a Jedi operating on me. |
Wow, that sounds pretty scary, hope you're okay!
The only surgery I've had was an emergency c-section 8 months ago, and I was awake for that. I could eat normally afterwards, I just couldn't sit up or walk for a while. Although I have been put unconscious quite often for tooth extractions when I was a kid (they're not allowed to do it anymore, though), because my milk teeth would never fall out on their own when they were supposed to. I was always calm going under, then I'd be really dopey and disorientated when I woke up... then I'd throw up every where, every time. |

@ Wicked: I had surgery to remove extra tissue in my mouth once. I never concidered it one of my big surgeries though because I don't think they used something as strong as anesthesia. But I remember seeing all the lazers and knives and pointy things coming at me as I went under. And that's all I remembered coming to. I almost forgot about that surgery, I guess that would make 5 now. :P
@ Cherish: Every time I come out of surgery, my main concern is not throwing up. I'd rather bread a bone than throw up. Fortunately though, it hasn't happened yet. :/ I wonder what kind of sedative they used on you...? @ Karvo: I think I know what they gave you. It's a medicine called Versed. I'm not sure if that's how you say it. But I never remembered having had it before until my 3rd surgery. I remember the nuse telling me she was going to push some versed to make me feel a lot less nervouse and I remember asking as she pushed it, "So how long should it be before I start to feel thi - whoaaaaaaaaa" Then I started giggling a LOT. Then mom started giggling then I started giggling some more! It was really funny. Versed is a very strong make-you-feel-good drug. And it also gives you some amnesia so I didn't even remember going under. I made all the way to the OR then I was out. This time I asked the anesthesiologist for some right away cus I remembered how calm it made me. He gave me some but it took another 1.5 freeking hours before I could go into surgery and it wore off completely. I was alert in the OR, I remember them giving me the paralidic that made me feel heavy and made it VERY hard to breathe, and I was panicking and then I finally fell asleep. As soon as I woke up, the panic was the first thing I remembered and I started crying and was signing for my mom. This experience was not as flawless as my last 3 surgeries. |
I've had two.
I only remember clinging onto a random woman, eventually getting strapped down..the smell of oranges the first time and I don't remember the rest because I was so young. The next time I had to get all of my wisdom teeth removed. I freaked out [inside] because it was my first IV. I only remember lying back and waking up a few minutes later. I woke up calm and tired but everyone said I was dopey when I wasn't -_- They wouldn't let me walk out on my own so I had to be put in a wheelchair. I ate solids that day because I knew the worst would come the next. I had some ice cream but also had mashed potatoes and various soups. Eventually I was so swollen and in pain (couldn't swallow pills) I didn't eat for a few days. |
When I was nine, I had an adenoidectomy because my adenoids were so large they were making the passageway for air from my nose into my throat so small I could barely breathe through my nose.
When I was sixteen, on June 20th (2006), I had surgery on my left ankle to reattach the ligament to my bone. They had to drill holes through the bottom of my ankle, attach sutures to the ligament, and pull them through the holes so that the ligament could re adhere. They put a band around my ankle, then, that'll stay in there for the rest of my life. On December 19th, 2006, I had surgery on my right ankle to take out bad tendon, dig out a groove in my ankle that was too shallow when I was born, and band that, too. I'll eventually have to have another surgery on my left ankle, but I just got into Nursing School, so I don't think it'll be happening any time soon. |
@ Vampyrelady: I was surprisingly alert getting home yesterday. But after I was given the promethazine and the painkiller, I got loopy and started getting dizzy and sleeping a lot. My mouth only just started hurting a lot today. Thank goodness for promethazine. I'm more concerned about not throwing up than I am about being in pain.
@ Miechan: Actually I was told that they would take out my adenoids if they saw that it was necessary while they were operating. I never heard whether they did or not. 0.o |
Only once and its nothing too drastic i dont know if its really considered surgery or not but I had all my wisdom teeth removed, waking up from it i was pretty calm, just a little out of it. I didnt like my food restrictions but i followed them, i was really worried though because i noticed this odd thing, i dont know how to describe it really.... it was down close to were my lower right one was removed it hurt really bad and felt swollen and was just a puffed up thick white line.... i thought i was getting an infection or something O_o it went away after about 4 days though...
Hopefully i dont have to have any other surgerys... i dont know its scary to me to think of any other kind of surgery because my dad has had multiple surgerys for different reasons, and i just dont want to have to go through that :( |
Yeah, when they take out the tonsils, it's common to take out the adenoids. I kept my tonsils LOL
|
I'm deaf on my left side (and I'm a musician.. hah go figure)
I'm way to afraid to have surgery for it :( I've been into surgery enough times as a kid as it is, I'm not about to willingly go back. |
i've never had surgery, but i remember what my husband told me about when he had his tonsils removed. while they were working on him, he woke up slightly, but passed right back out. also, he said that the iv flooded his vein afterward, so that woke him right up.

@ Liquid Diamond: If it is possible to fix your hearing problem on your left then I would suggest getting it done. Though the surgical procedure for an inner ear reconstruction or for an implant is more drastic than just having your tonsils scooped out, the recovery time takes only half as long as it does for a tonsillectomy and it doesn't hurt nearly as bad. But don't worry, they'll give you plenty of pain meds that'll make you nice and woozy.
My BAHA implant made a world of difference for me and I love it! Totally worth the surgery. Tonsillectomy on the other hand? It's miserable. |
I hope you recover quickly. :) I hope it is ok if I pray for you. If not I understand.
I've only had surgery on my wisdom teeth. I was groggy after I came to and slept for16 hours after my mom took me home. I couldn't eat solids either . That's how I got hooked on strawberry cheese cake ice cream. |
Oh man, I know that exact pain! I've had ear problems all my life because I was born 6 weeks early. My tubes weren't fully formed so my ears wouldn't drain and I would get ear infections on a regular basis, not a fun thing to live through. Getting fake tubes put in every once in a while wasn't fun either. Then the doctors decided that removing my tonsils would solve the problem... which it strangely did. Horray, I haven't had an ear infection in years and my last pair of tubes fell out long before that!
But oh... I couldn't talk, I couldn't eat, and being only six at the time the popsicles I picked out to eat every day (the doctor's orders were to eat ice cream and popsicles? Holy cow that's awesome!) were these giant rocket popsicles that my mother said I had to eat all of... I've hated popsicles in general ever since. -_- Then when I was in high school I got my wisdom teeth out before they came in... all four in one go! D: Again with the not talking and not eating, my mouth was swollen and I was on so much medication that I couldn't think straight anyways. I had to eat nothing but soup for a while but one time it was vegetable soup and the vegetables got caught in one of the gaping holes in my mouth and an infection quickly followed. That was another unpleasant experience. I hope you heal quickly and that this surgery does you some good! Who knows... once you get over it you may have less problems in your ear. |
So the first two days of my recovery I thought I was doing really well. I had moderate pain as I expected and I couldn't talk. I was pretty alert and responsive. But it wasn't until the second day when my mom told me that days 3, 4, and 5 were actually the worst days of recovery. -_-
I figured, well damn, I guess it's gunna hurt more than I thought. And it did hurt. but now for the reason I thought. I stayed doped up as much as possible so that I could sleep through as much of it as possible. I was warned about the medication, the nausea, the pain... I was prepared for all of that. But NOBODY warned me about the PHLEGM! And it is way worse than it sounds! for the past 3 days I've been hacking up phlegm like crazy. I keep a bucket next to my spot on the couch because otherwise I would never have been able to leave the bathroom sync. It makes me gag. It tastes horrible. It's even chunky! It makes me even more nauseous than before. NOBODY TOLD ME ABOUT THIS PART!!! Sometimes I even worry that I'll end up hacking off my scabs way too early. Can anybody suggest any remedies or something that can help get rid of this? |
