So why does my hamster, who has three cages and four wheels insist on breaking loose and running about my room crazy thirsty.
I know he was thirsty cuz when I caught him and put him in his NEW cage he was loving his water bottle like it was going out of style.
His new cage is made of two cages connected with a small tube, and two wheels. I wonder if he will like it as much as his older one. I know he is going to miss his old ball for sleeping in.
Really what would possess him to be so reckless, he jumped off a desk to land on the floor, any ideas?
whoops wrong forum, my bad please feel free to move to the right one, I clicked with out double checking...doh.

Yeah I can see a hamster spirit calling him forth to do epic battle with the wicker Barbie Doll chairs that are almost 30 years old...

Hmmm. Maybe he just felt the need for adventure! Even if I lived in a huge spacious mansion, I might get bored and want to venture outside and explore even more. So yea. I think he was looking for adventure. :)

my hamster hated me. :( when I first got her she was all loving then when I got to take her home she didn't let me touch her at all. I had to wear a glove to pick her up and put her in her ball to clean her cage. the damn thing bit the fawk out of my hand. :gonk: she died like a month afterwords I don't know why :(

I keep telling my husband we need more cages for him, but he insists that hamsters like smaller spaces better. He seems happy in his new smaller way more secure home though. I will have to make sure his water is full more often though. this bottle leaks and is making a mess. I am going to get him a new one after the holiday when I get paid.

Your hamster is probably thirsty because it over worked it's tiny body by escaping and than running around every where.
My hamster Harvey LOVED to break out of her cage. She just did not want to be confineded to a cage. The problem was that I could never find her on my own because she'd get in the trickiest place. So what did I do to find her? Put my dog on a leash (half rat terrier) and he'd sniff her out for me. Then I'd have to put him outside the room and grab her.
I tried two cages and a aquarium - she managed to get out of all three so I ended up keeping her in the easiest cage to clean and tried to put things in her cage that would be interesting to play with.

I don has hamsters no more... not since the awful fiasco a few years back involving my hamsters, my hateful, bitchy mother, and rat poisoning T_T
I DO have rats though. They seem to LOVE tight spaces, so maybe your hubby is right. I think that because they are rodents, they just like to be in enclosed, dark spaces where they feel safe.

I used to have a hamster that was exactly the same. I never did work out exactly how he kept escaping, though.
It got to the point where I'd have to make a hamster trap every other week.
(Bucket with a ramp leading up to it, food in the bottom to attract the hamster, and lots of tissue for a soft landing!)

Maybe you should let him run around the bathroom, or somewhere safe for 15-30 minutes a day. My hedgehog does the same thing. While I'm in the tub, I let him run around the bathroom floor. There are no wires for him to chew, and I can keep an eye on him.

I used to have a robo dwarf hamster. Once, when I was cleaning out his cage, he climbed up the pile of stuff in the corner (where I moved all of it) and jumped out! He ran really fast, and there was no way I could catch him, so I called my bengal cat (part leopard, part domestic cat = leopard instincts, house cat size) to go get him for me. He did and, surprisingly, brought him back unscathed. c:

At least you have a hamster.
I've been begging for one for 3 years and all I get is "maybe later"

My old hamster had a glass cage. Virtually impossible to escape from unless she suddenly became spiderman. xD
My cat however stalked the sh*t out of her.
Poor thing was terrified so bad we had to take her from my room and put her in my sister's room. D:
And then keep the door always locked. t.t;

I used to have a hamster that did that almost every night. Eventually I got so tired of chasing it around my room every morning when I woke up I gave it to my brother. Shortly after it died. D:
It was kind of sad.
I think they're just curious little creatures, like most animals, and want to explore new places.

Hamsters are just like that; I'd suggest closing off some small room like a bathroom and letting him run around once in a while to get some of his energy out. Although he'll probably still want out of his cage. x]

My hamster still hates me! He doesn't even like his ball, but he doesn't bite. I'm thinking he is just scared since my cat is around but I don't know. He jumped out of his cage once, but was ok. I'm sorry your hamster died. Too bad it never really got to know you.

Now they don't though. O_o
I did have one that died recently though. D:

I'd hate to think what people losing pet chameleons would do. ^_^ You can't even see the little bugger. ^_^
