If your school's teachers are responding poorly to struggling students asking for their extra assistance than your school needs better teachers. |

I don't go there anymore though, I went into home schooling. |
I know how that feels, I am very shy myself. You could also call it terminal because it causes me to be almost invisible at my college now. No one ever seems to pay me any mind unless it has something to so with a class we share; in turn I speak to no one. So I too can have trouble asking for help hence why I mentioned that sometimes my best friend's question is phrased as why I DIDN'T ask for help if I am forced to tell her that I have not. And in the recent case of my Intermediate Algebra my professor kind of intimidated me, he would make a crack every now and then but other than that he seemed kind of made of stone. His grading was certainly stone, it was pretty merciless.

Oh I can understand that, some teachers can make it hard for the student to ask for help. I had one who was always really snarky and judgemental, she made me cry on my first day and I never felt able to talk to her at all past that point. |
Well, during my middle school years, it seemed that the classes with the higher grading kids never seemed to need to question the subject matter.
We all just understood it, and rarely ever had to have the teacher slow down or help us understand things better. But it was quite the opposite with the lower-grading classes. The teacher was always being asked questions, and they never really got to help all of the students. As far as the teacher aides go, we rarely ever had them other than in middle school. They weren't even going to have teacher aides, but the way they have the class system set up, it was just too much strain on the teachers, so they implemented them. The only other "aides" we have had are just student-teachers or aides who don't have any class time during a certain period, so they go to another class and try to help out. But so far, I think we've only had 3-4 student-teachers total during all my years at school. Bella - Yah, the areas of concentration are often criticized. I'm the exact same way as you, I'm not really sure what I want to do. I have an extreme interest in psychology, but I really don't want to go to college, so I haven't put too much thought into it. And not only do we have areas of concentration, but we have a Senior Project throughout our whole Senior year where we have to do a massive volunteer project. That, or we just put so many hours into community service. But, the teachers at our schools are all generally pretty good. My school is ranked one of the highest in the state, and we're just a small-town district. The teachers do want to help struggling students, but our school just doesn't allow the time, budget, or resources available for it. It's a downright shame. Maybe if they didn't put so much damned emphasis on sports and band, we would be better off. -.- |
Hmm that is curious because in my district classes like Band, drama and art are the ones being eliminated in budget cuts which really sucks in my opinion. Because I am aspiring to get into those fields; I graduated school five years ago in case I didn't stress that clearly enough, I know what I desire to do now which is becoming an author/actress who has abilities in singing and the guitar. But my college has no acting classes and I don't know where to find them elsewhere. Not that it matters right now, I can not pay for acting classes right now and probably not for a while. I have not been able to find a job and make money.
|
Well, as I said, our school puts a lot of emphasis on band and sports.
Our sports teams are usually the highest rated teams in the state, and we've won the state championship twice in a row in both volleyball and football. If our school has budget cuts, it's the lunch room that feels the pinch the most. |
I think the "whole" school systems in USA are starting to lower the standards for students nowadays. If you compare USA to other countries education--we're pretty bad!!
Its not that I have anything against our school system, but we do need to crack down on students otherwise no one's going to learn anything anymore. I'm in school again to becoming a teacher so I want to make an impact on our schooling system. |

When I was in high school (only a few yrs ago), my teachers were dickheads. If you didn't get the grade, you got held back. If you didn't pass the exit exam, you didn't graduate. My teachers were meanie faces. I really didn't mind though, since I've always been a straight A student but I remember some of my friends dropped out of high school because they felt they couldn't stand up to the strict standards.
If the child say has a mental dissability, I understand giving them further tutoring... but letting average students slide-by with less work is RIDICULOUS, especially now when the GPA for high school students is so bloody low!!! where are children's brains? xD |
I was a slacker in high school myself, not an extreme one mind you, I did my best on a great deal of the work especially the larger projects. I actually cried once in my junior year when I got my anatomy project in biology back with a C. That project had been a bitch for me and I had barely lived through it.
But for the more minor assignments especially in history I sometimes would purposely ditch the ones that were too difficult or would take too long or sometimes in favor of focusing on something else. It was of more importance that I among the other students kept my grades up though because when I moved into this apartment we are sitting on the borderline between two districts but they somehow considered me in the other district than the one my school was in. My mom had to sign special transfer papers at the beginning of each year and if I did not keep my grades up they would send me to the school in the other district the one I was somehow considered to be in and I had heard bad things of that school. Not to mention I would be pulled away from my friends which was why my mom had preferred to sign the stupid papers. And all through my years in grade school I had never been shown any mercy for my struggling; I was basically always just told to study more, do my homework more and sometimes recommended I seek help. I was actually almost held back in the second grade, but my mom had told them bull shit, bloody hell no! I don't even remember how it was I had done so badly, and I don't believe my mom felt I had at all. This is what kids need though to be forced to study more and try harder on their homework and tests not mercy and to be lifted like a kitten unable to make a climb up upon the bed or sofa. It made me stronger because now I work hard in college, I do all my homework, ask for help when I need it and even study(I didn't really study in high school). And as a result I have still had problems in the math department but other than that I now get a bunch of A's which was like finding a white tiger in the wild when I was in high school and I am on the Dean's list. BTW in case you didn't guess, I managed to graduate from my high school with my friends, I never did get sent to the other, supposedly bad school. |
Ugh, the USA standards are already so low! D;
Well, the bright side is that it makes me look smarter x3 |
As many have already stated, the standards for America's schools are indeed low. Most schools say you need a 2.5 (2.5 or 2.0 I forget) GPA to graduate. I graduated well above that as did most of my peers. I think I knew one person whose GPA was lower than that but he honestly didn't try.
Doesn't this new style have something to do with the "No Child Left Behind" act? Personally I think all levels of schooling need to prepare a child or teen for what is next to come. |
Ugh, don't even get me started on the "No Child Left Behind" crap.
That was all I ever heard throughout elementary and middle school. -.- I'm not sure what the GPA requirement is to graduate from my school, but we have other things like our Area of Concentration and humanities classes. |
